makeup application - step by step
by Paula Begoun

Before you Start

1)Always apply makeup to clean skin (follow the routine appropriate for your skin type).

2)Make sure you have all the appropriate makeup tools and products you need.

3)Apply makeup in a well-lighted area.

4)Use a magnifying mirror to check your blending and overall smoothness.

Step 1: Foundation
Select a foundation for your skin type that matches your underlying skin tone exactly. Using the flat, smooth surface of a round, nonporous synthetic sponge, pour some foundation onto the sponge, then transfer the foundation in dots and dabs all over the face and the eyelids. You can also use your fingers to transfer the foundation in dots from the bottle to the face. Use your sponge to blend the foundation down and out over the face. Use the edge of the sponge without foundation (or turn the sponge over to the clean side) to dab or buff away any excess product. Do not apply foundation on the neck or under the chin. Your sponge is an exceptional blending tool that can be utilized throughout the makeup application process.

Note: If you are relying on a foundation with sunscreen for sun protection, you must apply a complete, even layer over the entire face. A thin or too sheer application will not provide adequate protection from the sun.

Step 2: Concealer
Use a concealer that is one or two shades lighter than your foundation. Apply it in a small arc around the inside corner of the eye. Using your fingers or a concealer brush, blend the concealer out evenly by dabbing and buffing. Avoid pulling or tugging the skin under the eye. Be careful not to spread the concealer onto areas where you don't want it. You can also apply concealer to the eyelid if that area is dark or, if your concealer has a matte finish, as a way to help eyeshadow cling better. For concealing facial discolorations such as freckles, blemishes, or red spots, use a concealer that matches or is just slightly lighter than your natural skin tone.

Note: Overly emollient or greasy moisturizers can make concealer slip into the lines around the eyes.

Step 3: Powder
After you apply the foundation and concealer, dust a light layer of powder over the entire face and eyelids. Apply the powder with a large, full, round brush. Avoid using a sponge or powder puff, which can put too much powder onto the face. Pick up some of the powder on the full end of the brush, knock off the excess, and brush it on using the same motion and direction as you did for the foundation (down and out).

Powder is great for touch-ups as the day goes by to dust down excessive shine.

Powder with sunscreen must be applied liberally so a thorough application is necessary for adequate protection. It is best to use a powder with sunscreen in combination with a foundation and/or moisturizer that also offers sun protection.

Step 4: Eyeshadow
user posted image
All of the options for building an eye design are too numerous to list here. The following is a basic application that can be adapted to create a variety of looks:

Typically, the lightest color is applied to the entire eyelid and to the edge of the eyebrow. (The general rule is that the larger or more prominent the eyelid area is compared with the under-brow area, the darker or deeper the eyelid color can be; the smaller the eyelid area is compared with the under-brow area, the brighter or lighter the eyelid color can be.) Select a deeper color from the same or a complementary color family to shade the crease. Practice your application and blend well; the goal is not to have obvious edges of color. Remember, lighter colors bring things forward and highlight, dark colors recede and add depth and shading.

Step 5: Eyeliner
Position the brush, pencil, or applicator as close to the lashline along the eyelid as possible. Then draw a line from the inner to outer corner using one fluid stroke, following the curvature of the eyelid. As a general rule, do not extend the line past the outer corner of the eye or hug the tear duct area of the eye. At first, keep the line as thin as possible, and if a thicker line is desired, repeat the process either across the entire lash line or simply on the outer third of the lid along the lashes.

Generally, the line along the lower lashes should be thinner and a less-intense color than the upper liner. Make sure that the two lines meet at the back corner of the eye. As a general rule, the larger the eyelid area, the thicker and softer the eyeliner should be. The smaller the eyelid area, the thinner and more intense the liner should be.

For health reasons, avoid lining the rim of the eye.

Step 6: Eyebrow Shaping
Use a color that closely matches the color of your brows rather than your hair color or a color you think would look better than what already exists. Apply powder brow color using a wedge brush, working in the direction the hair grows. Use a light touch, with short, quick motions, and avoid the temptation to exaggerate the shape of the brow by arching it severely or extending the brow into the temple area.

Step 7: Mascara
user posted image
If you use a lash curler, it is best to use it before you apply mascara. Squeeze gently with even pressure. Hold for a few seconds as you "walk" the curler along the length of the eyelashes, and release slowly. Apply mascara to the upper lashes using long, sweeping strokes. Be sure to begin as close to the lash root as possible and brush up and out. Use an old, cleaned-up mascara wand to remove any clumping that occurs.

Apply mascara to the lower lashes by holding the wand perpendicular to the eye and parallel to the lashes (using the tip of the wand). If necessary, use a tissue to wipe excess mascara off the brush before applying to the lower lashes.

Step 8: Blush
Using a blush brush, apply blush along the full line of the cheekbone brushing down and back toward the ear. Always knock the excess powder out of the brush to avoid applying too much blush. Use your sponge to soften any hard edges. Do not apply blush to the temple area, chin, nose, or forehead--this tends to make skin look uneven and ruddy.

Step 9: Lipstick and Lip Liner
user posted image
A lip brush or lip pencil is an optional accessory. You can use a lip pencil to draw a definitive edge around the mouth to follow when applying lipstick, and a lip brush to control your application. A standard tube of lipstick makes too wide a mark for some lips and too narrow a mark for others. If your lips are small, it is best to use a lip brush; if your lips are large, the only reason to use a lip brush is to improve your accuracy, especially with deeper shades such as red.

Line the actual shape of your mouth. Do not use corrective techniques that make the mouth look larger or longer, especially for daytime makeup--it almost always looks like a mistake.

If you want your lipstick to last, apply more of it and don't blot; blotting takes off several layers before you've even left the house.

Important Reminder:

Good brushes are essential for applying makeup:

1)Use soft, pliable brushes. Avoid hard or stiff brushes.

2)Use a brush that is the correct size for the area of the face you are working on.

3)Avoid brushes that are too large or too small.

4)Remember to knock the excess powder off the brush before you apply the color to your face.

5)Brush on the color gently with short even strokes; avoid wiping or rubbing the brush across the face.

6)Gently wash your brushes every month or so.

Hi shadowprincess,

Your Make up tutorial is comprehensive and might be useful for me oneday. However, I found it so complicated and time consuming. I don't think I can handle this for the time being. I wish I am patient enough to do all this to make myself prettier. doh.gif

Well, I'm kinda lazy type. I don't even wear lipstick/ lip gross when I go to work. sweat.gif

in 4 years time when i come back to m'sia, we meet up and i teach u the basics tongue.gif lol...

no need to do the whole list... step 1,3,4 and 8 is the basics.... just by doing this will already make u look presentable for work and everyday life..... then for ur lips, just put lip balm or lip gloss.. thats all....

the steps mentioned above wont take long to do.,. only 10 mins at most... what takes longer is choosing and buying the products....

Maggie_K,

Try sheseido pureness oil control compact powder. I like the soft and natural texture yet very suitable for oily skin like us.

A friend once told me that it is better to apply on powder after foundation so that the face looks more even. I tried but I didn't really like the feel...heavy. Maybe I used the wrong combination. tongue.gif

shall apply loose powder after foundation, especially the liquid foundation. its used to 'set' the foundation as the liquid one is wet and all.. and also, if you don't apply loose powder after liquid foundation, your face can be quite dirty because dirt can stick on your face quite easily, and also, if you change clothes or anything, can stain the clothes easily.

i dont know what color will suit you... because different brand has different color code. besides, i don't know your exact skin tone.

you have to test the color yourself, and should buy one tone lighter than your skin tone, so then after it oxydize, it'll be like your skin tone or look natural.

hopefully my answer does help. smile.gif

I am doubt on....
Foundation and make up base, both are de same?
The powder u all mentioned is it the compact powder or 2-way cake?
If we applied foundation then applied another layer of powder.. then the face will carry a very "heavy" look..... am i right?
i got heard other ppl said apply powder then apply loose powder.... is this correct?

Dearest wub.gif guest19 and ladies,

In general powder foundation is more for oily skintypes which need mattifying throughout the day. I don't recommend it for combination skin since it will only increase oil production.

Liquid foundation suits a variety of skintypes depending on formulation - it can be water or silicone based, and some contain oils which isn't a good idea for oily skin. It's the most versatile among the three most common formulations (excluding spray foundations which is liquid anyways).

Cream foundations also suit a variety of skintypes, again depending on the base and formuation. It may be less suitable for oilier skintypes, but generally provides more coverage. Some liquid foundations tend more towards the creamy side.

Coverage is very variable, again depending on formulation. The sheerest would probably be a liquid as you can mix moisturiser to thin it out further. Powder can achieve full coverage, especially for mineral foundation, but it can also get cakey quite easily since you can't blend as well as liquid or cream.

Cream would be the easiest to manipulate for full coverage, and may double as a concealer when you run out. But not recommended. It's usually applied with a sponge or fingers, as opposed to liquid which can also be applied with a foundation brush for sheerer coverage.

make up varies from skin definition. different skin needs different technique. oily skin need mattifying products to reduce shine if u dont apply and u choosed the wrong tone foundation, ur face will look horrible. patches everywhere...especially if u've use concealers....

nowadays girls usually go:
.liquid foundation, powder foundation, concealer if needed (do use the right tone)
.eye brow liner (most important to those who have thin eyebrow unless u wanna do eyebrow tatoo at unisense)
.mascara (i've seen many times my gf do this, it still looks very painful)-those with short eye lashes. no worries... get urself lenghtening mascara. those scared kena rain become panda bear... get waterproof mascara
.blusher for a rosy cheek
.lipstick for formal outing but normally...lipgloss. do note certain brand lip gloss can double up as a blusher. and if u wan shimmering lips and do not have shimmering lipgloss, shimmering eyeshadow can act as a shimmering tool...fourth finger dab and apply on lips after lipgloss

spray a dash of face mist and off u go....

those who have good looking skin, defined eyebrow and home made rosy cheeks.... apply mascara and lipgloss = perfect ade....

just my visualisation of girls only.... dont flame me if wrong k ladies....smile.gif

In order to avoid "patches", always use a make-up base before you put on your foundation. I find this very important and should be used whenever we use make-up. It not only gives you a smooth glossy finish, but it also protects your skin.

Biotherm offers a range, depending on your skin type.

So blusher should put after foundation then only loose powder right?
Is it okay to put blusher after the liquid foundation? Will the blusher 'drop' easily ?

my style of makeup, all these complete within 10 minutes or less...

Apply foundation ( i used maybelline stay white mousse ) all over the face area. Next, use the pink maybelline dream mousse blush ( apply with finger on the cheeks and slowly rub them off, it looks more natural this way.
Then apply the Maybelline 2 way foundation ( powdery type with sponge ) to blend up those area that looks kind of wet.

Next, i use the small brush to brush at the brown eyeliner pen, so that the browns sticks on the brush, and then lightly brush my eyebrow.
This tips was taught by an ex colleague of mine , so that the eyebrow looks more natural.

Next comes the eyeshadow part. Apply the lighter tone ( whatever tones you decide for that day to match your or complement your dressings ) on the bigger patch of the eyelids.
Apply medium tone nearer to the eyelids area , and lastly a darker tone ( sometimes dark navy sometimes dark brown ) closer to the lid area.

Then lipstick, and apply lips gloss.

done!

how can i avoid my eyeliner from smudge...it make me look like a racoon... sad.gif
*
Hey Christina! That's easy. cool2.gif

If you're good with liquid liner, there are loads of brands nowadays that produces waterproof liquid liner that absolutely will NOT come off until you take it off.
Otherwise, put liner and mascara on top lids and lashes ONLY to avoid the racoon eyed look.

Btw, Clinique has pretty good ones, that doesn't smudge a lot.
Shiseido is also good but their eyeliners can be a bit pricey for most of us.
Wet n' Wild has OK smudge-proof eyeliners.

It depends if you wanna use pencil, liquid, or the roll-up kind (the roll-up kind can come in handy for busy women).

The higher you go in price range, doesn't always mean it'll be the best kind.
Go to the beauty counters and try some out.

If all else fails, M.A.C. is always nice to fall back on, and their colors are really rich and intense.
And just so you know, liquid eyeliner is the best for smudge proof, once it dries! smile.gif

How to apply mascara well? I really hate to do that lah....
*
This is how i apply mascara. Mind you, my lashes are quite short, but this technique definitely works for me!

1. Curl your lashes. Press the curler for about 5-10 seconds
2. Look DOWN on a mirror
3. Hold the mascara brush horizontally, starting form the base of your lash, wiggle or 'zigzag' the wand, combing thru ur lashes.
4. You can add another coat if you want to.
5. Optional: If u got time, u can comb ur eyelashes with a lash comb, to separate each eyelash bcoz clumping could happen.

My major prob is.. When i apply mascara on my lashes, don't know why it will start to clump even tho i try applying zig-zag way..
And one more thing is i don't know which specific eyeliner too buy because i've combi skin and even my eyelid is oily. I cant trial and error because my cash is limited. sad.gif

u can just do the basics.. put foundation, powder, mascara and blusher... guaranteed cant go wrong tongue.gif

Agreed!! Thanks for the tips!!! How about a thread on what colour to use? I've started to increase my makeup use. I use mascara and blusher everyday, and either foundation and powder or foundation or powder alone. Mainly to reduce the greasiness in my face so that my mascara doesn't run tongue.gif tongue.gif I want to use eyeliner, but because my eyes are small, i'm worried that it would be overpowered by too many makeup items tongue.gif tongue.gif

thanks again for the good post!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

hmm.. im not sure if my make up is even correct.. usually i jus tembak, trial and error until i get something tht looks decent.. haha.. now i apply..

1. liquid foundation (light colour) to cover up my eye bags (reli panda eyes sweat.gif) n then natural beige liquid concealer to put back the colour.. doesnt cover all but reduces
2. liquid concealer on the blemishes etc
3. 2 way cake foundation thingy..? makes my skin look abit fairer and even out..
4. puff puff blusher, acts as a bronzer to make d cheeks less pale and give tht.. 'glow' lol
5. Black liquid eyeliner with mild glitter (cos i cant handle the non-glitter ones.. its too liquid and hard to apply lol) apply along the eye lashes.. but quite thick cos i dun have double eyelids and a thin line would disappear completely
6. Silkygirl silver eyeliner pencil.. apply abit near the tear ducts below the eye (heard it enlarges the eye??)
7. eyelash curler, maybelline unstoppable and maybelline turbo
8. a very light pink lipstick from maybelline.. duwan too 'coloured' cos it makes me look very kua zhang (basically, its not nice)
9. light pink-orangey Etude Lipgloss to make it look nicer (i rarely apply this)

basically.. i think my make up is too much now lol.. this whole process takes me like.. 45 minutes if im fussy cos i dun reli knw how to apply well >.<

Hmm..not sure if i'm posting in the correct thread. I have a photo assistant, who needs to brush up her make up and hairstyling techniques. So I wanted to help her out, wondering is there any video or tutorial DVDs that I can purchase online?

Streaming video would be better!! Or any blog around that I can surf and have a look?

Anyway, thought that you girls will know alot. Hope to get some feedback. Cheers all!

2 way cake can be applied either wet or dry

make up base is subject to your preference, but it's always better to have make up base on before anything.. the effects may vary according to the color of the base

My simple make up for presentable look tongue.gif

1. Concealer: under eyes and at the side of lips (I don't know what you call this place, but I see a lot of make up artists do it LOL. and it makes ur make up look more flawless...) I use a concealer stick and then dab with my finger to even it out...

2. Foundation: i use the body shop all in one face base. i wet the sponge a bit if i want a fuller/heavier coverage. for normal usage, i just apply it dry.

3. Loose powder: with a big powder brush to seal it all in.

4. Eyeshadow: basic dark brown on the crease of my eyelids using a blending brush.

5. Eyeliner: i use black on my bottom lids only. I love maybelline auto eyeliner. Intense colour and easy application.

6. Mascara: heavy and black on my upper lashes to even out the eyeliner on my bottom lids.

7. Blusher: currently i'm using sasa blusher, but i can't find it in sasa anymore. seems they've stopped producing it sad.gif

8. Lipstick: i apply a thick coat and then i purse my lips on a tissue. It becomes matte and very natural looking! biggrin.gif

9. Optional Gloss: when i feel bored tongue.gif hehehe

This might look complicated and time consuming but i've done it in 5 minutes before. I can even apply make up when i'm already running late!

Practice makes perfect!

you can try the in2it black liner. it's not the gel/liquid/pencil one. it's the one which seems like a crayon.
the liner is not with me now, so i cant remember what its called.
but, it's <RM20 only. smile.gif
available at any guardian/other pharmacies.
and also, another item you can use, is an eyelid primer. smile.gif
it will ensure that the makeup will not stray. smile.gif
hope this helps!

It depends on the types of foundation & concealer you use. EX if you using liquid concealer, it should before "2-way cake" / after "liquid foundation".
concealer use for covering your dark circles, blemish & pigments. If you do not have these condition i guess you are blessed thumbup.gif then u dont need to apply concealer as with foundation itself can helps our skin turn into even tone. If you have serious dark circles ( especially nose sensitive or sinus ) i will suggest you use orange color concealer. reddish, acnes can use green concealer. freckles can use yellow or beige color 1 tone darker than your skin followed by lighter beige cover on it =)

try to avoid using pencil eyeliner?

usually for lower eyeliner i will apply on the roots of lashes instead of the water line as it also smudges easily~~~ sweat.gif

hehehehe.... if you have fawless skin like baby, no heavy foundation needed. To archive this kind of look infornt of camera, heavy foundation ( those for shooting / bridal makeup or stage ) will needed as the outcome on the photo will appear "fawless" but when you see it closely ( i mean you stand infront of the model ) you'll see the foundation is at least 1 inch thick tongue.gif

for your lash line, liquid or gel eyeliner are better at staying put all day. if you're buying from drugstore i'd recommend rimmel's liquid eyeliner or gel eyeliner from maybeline. if you're buying higher end, try liquid eyeliner from mac and gel eyeliner from bobbi brown.for your lower lash line, you'll have to use pencil eyeliner anyway so try putting a light layer of same-color eyeshadow on top. won't smudge, promise! ;P

line your eyes like your normally would, then take an angled eyeliner brush and dip it in some eyeshadow (preferably in the same color as your eyeliner) and just pat it on top. if you want to soften the look then smudge it out a bit, then line again with liquid eyeliner smile.gif

1stly this is a photo, and your makeup always looks flushed out in photos meaning in real life, her makeup is probably wayyyyyy thick. but if you want to have that look in real life, then i suggest foundation, concealer, powder. for eyes, one satin finish all over eyelid color (beige-ish tone) then line your eyes using a black eyeshadow and a eyeliner brush instead of eyeliner pencil. a light dust of bronzer (just to enhance your face's natural dimension) , then also light dust of blush. finally, lipgloss.

to apply bb cream is easier and you wont need foundation or concealer if you already have your bb cream on but yes to the powder. i personally think only the bb cream and powder will make you look pale but some would call it "clean". really depends on what you're comfortable with.

have fun experimenting!

I'm totally agree with applying it in well lit area..

once i applied bronzer in my room (a bit under lit)..

i got a shock of my life when i go to bathroom and my face looks burn!
apparently bcz it didn't look like i put enough bronzer (when i applied it in my room)..i actually already over done it.
