1. Symbian OS

Symbian OS is an operating system (OS) designed for mobile devices and smartphones, with associated libraries, user interface, frameworks and reference implementations of common tools, originally developed by Symbian Ltd. It was a descendant of Psion's EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors, although an unreleased x86 port existed.

In 2008, the former Symbian Software Limited was acquired by Nokia and a new independent non-profit organisation called the Symbian Foundation was established. Symbian OS and its associated user interfaces S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) were contributed by their owners to the foundation with the objective of creating the Symbian platform as a royalty-free, open source software. The platform has been designated as the successor to Symbian OS, following the official launch of the Symbian Foundation in April 2009. The Symbian platform was officially made available as open source code in February 2010.

Devices based on Symbian OS account for 46.9% of smartphone sales, making it the world's most popular mobile operating system
In the number of "smart mobile device" shipments, Symbian devices are the market leaders. Statistics published in February 2010 showed that the Symbian devices comprised a 47.2% share of the smart mobile devices shipped in in 2009, with RIM[Blackberry] having 20.8%, Apple having 15.1% [through iPhone OS], Microsoft having 8.8% [through Windows CE and Windows Mobile] and Google Android having 4.7%. Other competitors i.e include Palm OS, Qualcomm's BREW, SavaJe, Linux and MontaVista Software.

Although the share of the global smartphone market dropped from 52.4% in 2008 to 47.2% in 2009, the shipment volume of Symbian devices grew 4.8%, from 74.9 million units to 78.5 million units.

Devices that use Symbian OS

On 16 November 2006, the 100 millionth smartphone running the OS was shipped.
  • The Ericsson R380, in 2000, was the first commercially available phone based on Symbian OS. As with the modern "FOMA" phones, this device was closed, and the user could not install new C++ applications. Unlike those, however, the R380 could not even run Java applications, and for this reason, some have questioned whether it can properly be termed a 'smartphone'.
  • The UIQ interface was used for PDAs such as Sony Ericsson P800, P900, W950 and the RIZR Z8 and RIZR Z10.
  • The Nokia S60 interface is used in various phones, the first being the Nokia 7650. The Nokia N-Gage and Nokia N-Gage QD gaming/smartphone combos are also S60 platform devices. It was also used on other manufacturers' phones such as the Siemens SX1 and Samsung SGH-Z600. Recently, more advanced devices using S60 include the Nokia 6xxx, the Nseries (except Nokia N8xx and N9xx), the Eseries and some models of the Nokia XpressMusic mobiles.
  • The Nokia 9210, 9300 and 9500 Communicator smartphones used the Nokia Series 80 interface.
  • The Nokia 7710 is the only device currently using the Nokia Series 90 interface.
  • Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Sony Ericsson and Sharp developed phones for NTT DoCoMo in Japan, using an interface developed specifically for DoCoMo's FOMA "Freedom of Mobile Access" network brand. This UI platform is called MOAP "Mobile Oriented Applications Platform" and is based on the UI from earlier Fujitsu FOMA models.

As of 21 July 2009, more than 250 million devices running Symbian OS had been shipped.

Hacking Symbian

S60 v3 and v5 (OS 9.x) devices can be hacked to remove the platform security introduced in OS 9.1 onwards thus allowing users to install "unsigned" files (files without certificates validated by Symbian) and allowing access to previously locked system files. This allows changing of how the operating system works, allowing hidden applications etc. to be viewable and possibly increases the threat posed by mobile viruses as the operating system files are now exposed

Symbian Platform

The Symbian platform is an open source operating system (OS) and software platform designed for smartphones and maintained by the Symbian Foundation. The Symbian platform has been designated as the successor to Symbian OS. The Symbian platform was officially made available as open source code in February 2010.

2. iPhone OS

iPhone OS (known as OS X iPhone or iPhone OS X in its early history) is a mobile operating system developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the default operating system of the iPhone, the iPod Touch, and the iPad.

It is derived from Mac OS X, with which it shares the Darwin foundation, and is therefore a Unix-like operating system by nature. iPhone OS has four abstraction layers: the Core OS layer, the Core Services layer, the Media layer, and the Cocoa Touch layer. The operating system uses less than 500 megabytes of the device's storage

iPhone

The iPhone is a line of Internet- and multimedia-enabled smartphones designed and marketed by Apple Inc. and released in 2007. An iPhone functions as a camera phone (also including text messaging and visual voicemail), a portable media player (equivalent to a video iPod), and an Internet client (with e-mail, web browsing, and Wi-Fi connectivity). The user interface is built around the device's multi-touch screen, including a virtual keyboard rather than a physical one. Third-party applications are available from the App Store, which launched in mid-2008 and now has well over 100,000 "apps" approved by Apple. These apps have diverse functionalities, including games, reference, GPS navigation, social networking, and advertising for television shows, films, and celebrities.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The user interface of iPhone OS is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders, switches, and buttons. The response to user input is supposed to be immediate to provide a fluid interface. Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse pinching. Internal accelerometers are used by some applications to respond to shaking the device (one common result is the undo command) or rotating it in three dimensions (one common result is switching from portrait to landscape mode).

A home screen (rendered by "SpringBoard") with application icons, and a dock at the bottom of the screen, showing icons for the applications the user accesses the most, is presented when the device is turned on or whenever the home button is pressed. The screen has a status bar across the top to display data, such as time, battery level, and signal strength. The rest of the screen is devoted to the current application. There is no concept of starting or quitting applications, only opening an application from the home screen, and leaving the application to return to the home screen. It is possible to force an application to quit by holding down the power button until the "slide to power off" slider appears, and then holding the home button down, however. While some multitasking is permitted it is not obtrusive or obvious. However, it is limited to Apple's own applications, a limitation that will be lifted with the introduction of OS 4.0. Third-party applications are quit when left, but from the 3.0 software update, notifications can be pushed from Apple's servers to the iPhone or iPod Touch. Many of the included applications were designed to work together; allowing for the sharing or cross-propagation of data from one application to another (e.g., a phone number can be selected from an email and saved as a contact or dialed for a phone call.) The iPad includes a similar interface, except that the dock is "3D" and the background is interchangeable.

3. Palm WebOS

Palm webOS is a mobile operating system running on the Linux kernel with proprietary components developed by Palm.

The Palm Pre smartphone is the first device to launch with webOS, and both were introduced to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 8, 2009. The Palm Pre and webOS were released on June 6, 2009. The second device to use the operating system, the Palm Pixi, was released on November 15, 2009. The webOS features significant online social network and Web 2.0 integration.

webOS's graphical user interface is designed for use on devices with touchscreens. It includes a suite of applications for personal information management and makes use of a number of web technologies such as HTML 5, JavaScript, and CSS.Palm claims that the design around these existing technologies was intended to spare developers from learning a new programming language. The Palm Pre, released on June 6, 2009, is the first device to run this platform.

RIM

RIM provides a proprietary multi-tasking operating system (OS) for the BlackBerry, which makes heavy use of the many specialized input devices available on the phones, particularly the scroll wheel (1999–2006) or more recently the trackball (September 12 2006–present) and trackpad (September 2009-present). The Os provides support for Java MIDP 1.0 and WAP 1.2. Previous versions allowed wireless synchronization with Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail and calendar, as well as with Lotus Domino e-mail. The current OS 5.0 provides a subset of MIDP 2.0, and allows complete wireless activation and synchronization with Exchange e-mail, calendar, tasks, notes and contacts, and adds support for Novell GroupWise and Lotus Notes.

Third-party developers can write software using these APIs, and proprietary BlackBerry APIs as well, but any application that makes use of certain restricted functionality must be digitally signed so that it can be associated to a developer account at RIM. This signing procedure guarantees the authorship of an application, but does not guarantee the quality or security of the code.

5. bada OS

bada is a mobile operating system being developed by Samsung Electronics. It is designed for use in smartphones. Its name is derived from Korean word for ocean. The first Bada-based phone is the Wave S8500, to be released in April 2010.

Samsung announced the bada operating system on 10 November, 2009.The first mobile phone handsets based on bada are expected to be displayed in the first half of 2010, and to go on sale in the second half of 2010. Samsung plans to open a bada application store. Mobile gaming is also to be a key focus, with developers such as EA and Capcom on board.

The Korea Herald said that Samsung's bada will challenge Google's Android phone platform. According to Samsung, a significant proportion of its mobile phones will ship with bada in 2010.The badadev blog speculates that the number of bada users may reach 50 million in 2010

Devices

Samsung's first phone running on its Bada OS was shown at the Mobile World Congress 2010: the Wave S8500. The Wave is a slim touchscreen phone including a Samsung-made 1-GHz processor, a "Super AMOLED" screen and 720p high-def video capabilities

System

The Bada operating system has a kernel configurable architecture, which allows the use of either the Linux kernel, or another Real-time operating system (RTOS) kernel. The Linux kernel is the preferred choice for smartphones, while RTOS is used for cheaper feature-phones, due to its smaller memory footprint.

It has a web browser based on the open-source WebKit, and also features Adobe Flash. Both WebKit and Flash can be embedded inside native Bada applications. Bada offers interactive mapping with Point of interest (POI) features, which can also be embedded inside native applications.

Bada supports various sensors, such as motion sensing, vibration control, face detection, accelerometer, magnetometer, tilt, and GPS, which can be incorporated into applications.

Native applications are developed in C++ with the Bada SDK, and the Eclipse based IDE. Bada can also run Java ME applications (MIDP profile)

6. Windows Mobile OS

Windows Mobile is a compact mobile operating system developed by Microsoft, and designed for use in smartphones and mobile devices.

The current version is called "Windows Mobile 6.5". It is based on the Windows CE 5.2 kernel, and features a suite of basic applications developed using the Microsoft Windows API. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows, feature-wise and aesthetically. Additionally, third-party software development is available for Windows Mobile, and software can be purchased via the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

Originally appearing as the Pocket PC 2000 operating system, most Windows Mobile devices come with a stylus pen, which is used to enter commands by tapping it on the screen. Microsoft announced a completely new phone platform, Windows Phone 7, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 15, 2010. Phones running Windows Mobile 6.x will not be upgradeable to version 7.

Windows Mobile's share of the Smartphone market has fallen year-on-year, decreasing 20% in Q3 2009. It is the 5th most popular smartphone operating system, with a 2% share of the worldwide smartphone market (after Symbian, BlackBerry OS, Android and iPhone OS). In the United States, it is the 3rd most popular smartphone operating system for business use (after BlackBerry OS and iPhone OS), with a 24% share among enterprise users

There are three versions of Windows Mobile for various hardware devices:

- Windows Mobile Professional runs on 'Windows Phones' (smartphones) with touchscreens
- Windows Mobile Standard runs on 'Windows Phones' with regular screens
- Windows Mobile Classic which runs on 'Windows Mobile Classic devices' [Pocket PCs]

Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7 is an upcoming version of the Windows Mobile operating system developed by Microsoft. It is planned for release by "holiday" 2010. Windows Phone 7 was initially intended to be released during 2009, but several delays prompted Microsoft to develop Windows Mobile 6.5 as an interim release being the first version to officially extend the customer focus from previously pure business to consumer and introducing the Windows Phone brand along with new services like "My Phone" and "Windows Marketplace for Mobile". During the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Microsoft revealed details of Windows Phone 7, which features a new operating system and integration with Xbox Live, Zune and Bing services. Previously, the project was under the name "Windows Phone 7 Series". However, it was announced on April 2, 2010 that the word "Series" had been dropped from the official name, making the new name simply "Windows Phone 7

Microsoft had originally planned to continue the Windows Mobile line to Windows Mobile 7, based on an upgrade to the Windows Mobile platform, codenamed Photon. The original Photon and Windows Mobile 7 have since been scrapped, however, Microsoft officially announced Windows Phone 7 Series in its place. Microsoft has since renamed the operating system from Windows Phone 7 Series to Windows Phone 7. It is planned for release by "holiday" 2010.

Windows Phone 7 was initially intended to be released during 2009, but several delays, and likely due to the move away from Photon, prompted Microsoft to develop Windows Mobile 6.5 as an interim release. During the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Microsoft revealed details of Windows Phone 7, which features a new operating system and integration with Xbox Live and Zune services.

Phones currently running Windows Mobile 6.x will not be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7

7. Android OS

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications, that uses a modified version of the Linux kernel. It was initially developed by Android Inc., a firm later purchased by Google, and lately by the Open Handset Alliance. It allows developers to write managed code in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

The unveiling of the Android distribution on November 5, 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 65 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.

On Feb 16, 2010 Google announced that 60,000 cell phones with Android are shipping every day.

8. Maemo OS

Maemo is a software platform developed by Nokia for smartphones and Internet Tablets. It is based on the Debian Linux distribution.

The platform comprises the Maemo operating system and the Maemo SDK.

Maemo is mostly based on open source code, and has been developed by Maemo Devices within Nokia in collaboration with many open source projects such as the Linux kernel, Debian, and GNOME. Maemo is based on Debian GNU/Linux and draws much of its GUI, frameworks, and libraries from the GNOME project. It uses the Matchbox window manager, and the GTK-based Hildon as its GUI and application framework.

The UI in Maemo 4 is similar to many handheld interfaces, and features a "Home" screen, which acts as a central point from which all applications and settings are accessed. The Home Screen is divided into areas for launching applications, a menu bar, and a large customisable area that can display information such as an RSS reader, Internet radio player, and Google search box.

The Maemo 5 UI is slightly different: The menu bar and info area are consolidated to the top of the display, and the four desktops can be customized with shortcuts and widgets.

At the Mobile World Congress in February 2010, it was announced that the Maemo project would be merging with Moblin to create the MeeGo mobile software platform.

History
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Maemo 5

Maemo 5, also known as Fremantle, is the default operating system on the Nokia N900. The release features a much more finger-friendly and consistent UI, and an X-server based on Xorg rather than KDrive. It features several new technologies, including the Tracker search system, PulseAudio (replacing ESD), the OHM hardware management daemon, the gUPnP UPnP framework, enhanced location framework, and Upstart. Several existing technologies have also been updated, including Gecko, BlueZ, gstreamer (will include OpenMAX), GTK+, and Telepathy.

Maemo 5 comes with new hardware, the Nokia N900 featuring a Texas Instruments OMAP3 SoC, with an HSPA modem and HD camera, which provides significant improvements in the areas of speed, 3D acceleration, and media playback. It has been decided by Nokia that the commercial Maemo 5 platform releases will not be available on N800/N810 hardware, for compatibility reasons. An open source Linux project called Mer, a variant of Maemo, has been formed to provide an alternative, fully open operating system for mobile devices including the Nokia N800 and N810.

Unlike most smartphones, the end-user is able to gain root access by issuing the command "sudo gainroot" in the terminal in Maemo 5.The device does not need to be unlocked or "jailbroken" in order to install an unsupported application. The UK cellular operator Vodafone has its own branded, somewhat more restricted version of the Maemo 5 operating system. Users can flash (change) to the Global variant of the operating system.

MeeGo

MeeGo is a Linux-based open source mobile operating system project which was announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2010 by Intel and Nokia in a joint press conference. Its aim is to merge the efforts of Intel on Moblin and of Nokia on Maemo into one project, with mixed reactions from the communities of both parties.

The decisions are that the user interface framework will be based on Qt but to provide compatibility for Moblin applications. The software platform below Qt will be based on Intel's Moblin project and be hosted by the Linux Foundation.

Depending on the device, applications shall be provided from either the Intel AppUp or the Nokia Ovi digital software distribution systems.

It will provide support for both ARM and x86 processors.

Harmattan, originally slated to become Maemo 6, the sixth incarnation of Nokia's Maemo mobile operating system, is now considered to be a MeeGo instance (though not a MeeGo Product), and Nokia is giving up the Maemo branding for Harmattan and beyond (Fremantle and previous will still be referred to as Maemo instances)

At long last, this thread is opened...been very eager in joining the discussion

For me yeah, Symbian^3 delay really sucks. Maybe there were some important issues need to be rectify before its launch. We all know that Nokia's future depends on this one rather than the Meego platform, and I really hope that this delay will only bring in better result.
Heck we all know right what happens if half baked phones were released...*cough..N97 fiasco...cough*

Dell Lightning seriously looks tempting. But running WP7 really makes me somehow skeptical with its success. No doubt that it will sell loads but to be honest, this OS was not for me LOL. laugh.gif
For starters, I am not really like the pseudo multitasking it provides. And FFS why do Microsoft revert to the restrictive, dictatorship way of Apple when the ecosystem of Windows Mobile already quite open itself. doh.gif

Anyone with me?

And FFS why do Microsoft revert to the restrictive, dictatorship way of Apple when the ecosystem of Windows Mobile already quite open itself. doh.gif

Anyone with me?

but still dont know if Windows Phone 7 can challenge the iPhone OS 4 ,,..
well.. Windows is no.5 now.. still far behind iphone[no.3]

iPhone OS keep increasing and it is possible to defeat symbian[no.1] ..

anyway.. I still think Symbian Platform [^3] will pawn the Windows Phone [7]
