It does have the physical 3-axis gyroscope hardware in iPhone 4, when combine with accelerometer then you have 6-axis rotation.
Added on June 12, 2010, 5:08 pmIf you guys notice, iPhone 4 is slightly longer in height than previous models.

QUOTE(elainor @ Jun 12 2010, 08:26 PM) yea if gyroscope is a software...then every phone can use it as a function... it will make iphone 4 stand out among smartphones... Apple being Apple, they are always the first to introduce new kind of hardware in their device. Sooner or later, every other company will follow. The reason iPhone stands out in the crowd is the hype, excitement, and most importantly the ease of use. I don't understand some people who sell their iPhone not after a week of usage claiming it's hard to use. Really? Fail.

I've been watching the official demo of FaceTime of iPhone 4 on YouTube, the reason video call looks good on it might be because of the 'retina display'.
