That is a bioball.. usually used in sump filters and all that they mentioned on it providing surface area for bacteria is true. >.>

Well for starters, here we look at the "Entire outlook of the aquarium" hence AQUASCAPING.. to make your aquarium look very pleasing to the eyes.

CAre for each individual species of fauna/flora is another whole new different story.
