I suggest

20Mbps - RM229 - 350GB (off-peak 12am-9am bandwidth unlimited ) (Power pack)

10Mbps - RM159 - 100GB (off-peak 12am-9am bandwidth unlimited ) (Extreme pack)

5Mbps - Basic pack - 30GB RM109 (off-peak 12am-9am bandwidth unlimited ) (Entry/Basic Pack)

Now 4mb combo is at rm140 already, I believe it's made purposely so that 4mb<5mb, thus i think the price for UniFi won't get any lower.

Plus, TM will claim UniFi is a triple play service and worth to be more expensive than 4mb package.

However, they need improve on the cap thou.

I think a lot of users take the cost of international link for granted. The lines are EXPENSIVE. It's not as cheap as 1mbps for RM88 per dedicated line. I'd estimate about 100mbps for USD150,000.

From TM's POV,

  • they would be able to cover the cost of the lines in about 5-7 years return period if they continue to charge @ this rate.

  • If every user uses the bandwidth 100% all the time, they would be forced to increase the international bandwidth, and this would induce a much longer return period.

Why Singapore can have a much lower charges for internet? It's because they collaborated in a lot of projects for laying down cables, and they are willing for a longer return period. And they have more competitors. (Yes, there's monopoly here)

What does this imply?

  • The investors of TM want their invested money back, in a shorter period of time.

  • The investors do not see the long term benefit

    1. Cheaper internet, leads to

    2. More userbase, leads to

    3. More local user hosted content, leads to

    4. Save international bandwidth in return

  • So, they charge us at a higher price and imposed a cap so they won't need to increase the international link too fast.

  • We, as the users,

    • Want a more reasonable price (Paying for 2x the amount isn't going to cut it).

    • And most of the user want to use what they paid for 100% of the time. Hence, they go to full downloading mode, even downloading what is not really needed (and bragging "Wee, I've a 2 TB HDD and it's filling up too quickly!! Need moar!").

So, in conclusion, my point is:-

    • We, as the user, have the responsibility to help with the situation too. Please DO NOT download all the unneeded things, and in the end not using it.

    • If you really can download 1 TB per month (That's 100 Blu-Ray movies, or 100 games) and can use all the downloaded content, I'd say "Dude, get a freaking life."

    • TM, as the ISP, should provide the service at a cheaper rate to encourage higher BB penetration. Please do look at the long term benefits (as stated above).

i agreed with u.. but i think alot of ppl not..

But TM need to upgrade their bandwidth too.... 6% used 80% of total bandwidth.. this is unacceptable..
I think TM need provide at least 20-25% of total bandwidth..
mean 1 out of 4 are using total bandwidth. not 1 out of 20

    Let's start LYN download hub...
since we got 10mb upload biggrin.gif

this also help to reduce international bandwidth and stable speed.

Let's say, I got RS and downloaded ABC.
I started a thread with all my file list..
FTP server is installed in my PC and I share all my file accordingly...
(LYN doesn't allow any copyright material in this forum)

I assume that by making more lanes, you mean upgrading international link capacity? I would not know how much additional bandwidth would be required but I'm sure TM already has done something about it. I keep mentioning how Youtube is playing abnormally fast for popular videos but not so much for videos with less than say.. 20k views, it's as though they have a local content distribution network for Youtube vids now. Perhaps this is a step they've taken to reduce the Youtube streaming load rather than attempting to throttle it down. People would be very suspicious if they signed up for a 20mbps line which was allocated RM15b in funding but be unable to play Youtube video's properly, you know?

Thing about Malaysia is we sort of live in between the West and the far East. We take our content from both sides. The only time you would be accessing local content is to grab news from the Star, Malaysiakini, do you banking with Maybank2u or chat here on Lowyat.net. There's only so much bandwidth you can add and the ISP always has cheaper options to just throttle everyone seeing as they have a little monopoly going on here.

What we can do about it however is to start up our own local peer-to-peer scene. Not only would it basically harness everyones downloads into a single network (RS/MU/Torrents/DDL), it would be extremely fast and save us a lot of international bandwidth. Think about it like recycling bandwidth. A single Unifi user's uplink can basically support 20x 1mbps users.. combine it with other Unifi/Streamyx users within a multi-source P2P network.. you get an amazing amount of bandwidth and 'local content' so to speak.

Saves bandwidth, time and cash. I think that would be the way forward, both heavy downloaders and standard users would be satisfied.

In terms of cars and highway capacity, why put more cars on the road in the first place when we can just carpool?
