Broadband Shock to Most Malaysians

Letters
By Ganesh

Yet again, Malaysians are misled with false promises. For months there was so much hype to the Government’s initiative to provide cheaper, affordable and yet very fast broadband.

Yesterday, it came as a shock to Malaysians that the so called affordable and fast broadband service starts at RM149 and ranges up to RM249. To many Malaysians, this sum is a huge commitment. Many were expecting prices from RM50 onwards.

To make matters worse, the Star reported today that in Singapore, one could get 1Gbps for RM200. Mind you, RM200 to a Singaporean is small money. Don’t just convert, see the GDP per capita. Most Singaporeans are earning 5 times more than Malaysians as Malaysia has one of the lowest GDP per capita in the region.

Thus RM200 for a 1Gbps line is small change to a Singaporean. But our mere 5Mbps at RM149 is big money to the average Malaysian. To some, its money to feed the whole family for a whole week.

Clearly the government has no idea about the purchasing power of Malaysians and the low remuneration the average Malaysian earns and the very shocking fact that the average person’s pay packet is not in proportion to the cost of living in Malaysia.

In comparison, the 6Mbps broadband in Singapore (Singtel) with unlimited downloads is S$30 per month and the 15Mbps broadband with unlimited downloads is going for S$62.

The mobile broadband with a free USB stick and with speeds of 1.2Mbps is S$14 per month with a 30GB allowance.

Again, please be reminded Singaporeans earn far more than the average Malaysian does and yet their broadband is much cheaper. In 2009 Singapore’s GDP (nominal) per capita was $35,000 whilst Malaysia was $8,000

Refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_count...nal)_per_capita
So, with our purchasing power so low, how can the average person afford RM$149?

Was the government ever sincere about giving affordable Internet to the public? I wonder. If it owns huge amounts of shares in the company that is providing the new High Speed Broadband service, isn’t that a conflict of interest?

I think a lot of users take the cost of international link for granted. The lines are EXPENSIVE. It's not as cheap as 1mbps for RM88 per dedicated line. I'd estimate about 100mbps for USD150,000.

From TM's POV,
  • they would be able to cover the cost of the lines in about 5-7 years return period if they continue to charge @ this rate.
  • If every user uses the bandwidth 100% all the time, they would be forced to increase the international bandwidth, and this would induce a much longer return period.

Why Singapore can have a much lower charges for internet? It's because they collaborated in a lot of projects for laying down cables, and they are willing for a longer return period. And they have more competitors. (Yes, there's monopoly here)

What does this imply?
  • The investors of TM want their invested money back, in a shorter period of time.
  • The investors do not see the long term benefit
    1. Cheaper internet, leads to
    2. More userbase, leads to
    3. More local user hosted content, leads to
    4. Save international bandwidth in return
  • So, they charge us at a higher price and imposed a cap so they won't need to increase the international link too fast.

  • We, as the users,
    • Want a more reasonable price (Paying for 2x the amount isn't going to cut it).
    • And most of the user want to use what they paid for 100% of the time. Hence, they go to full downloading mode, even downloading what is not really needed (and bragging "Wee, I've a 2 TB HDD and it's filling up too quickly!! Need moar!").

So, in conclusion, my point is:-
    • We, as the user, have the responsibility to help with the situation too. Please DO NOT download all the unneeded things, and in the end not using it.
    • If you really can download 1 TB per month (That's 100 Blu-Ray movies, or 100 games) and can use all the downloaded content, I'd say "Dude, get a freaking life."
    • TM, as the ISP, should provide the service at a cheaper rate to encourage higher BB penetration. Please do look at the long term benefits (as stated above).

DC Hub is not a really good idea. I would suggest using torrent to host. It will be much faster and convenient. Then we need a tracker, and a search tool to help browsing the torrents.

Speedtest result is based on 1 connection. For downloads, most probably users will use download managers to download with more than 1 connection. That's why can get full speed. So, in other words, Speedtest is accurate, but not accurate on practical usage.

Anyway, for those who're living in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam (postcode 40460), UniFi will be available after July 2010. But the weird thing is, within 50cm from my house, there's a UniFi green box.
