As I worked in Menara Sunway I decided to go there for lunch and hoping to see the Galaxy S as well since I was considering switching to Android. The build quality of the phone is so so to me, the plastic feel is readily apparent. The screen is the center piece, when I set it to max brightness it really stood out. However I noticed that the UI still lags from time to time, believe this may be an Android thing not so much about the hardware itself. Unfortunately the set that I played with did not have any HD videos in it so cannot try that out. But I did try out SWYPE that certainly was interesting. The phone as many mentioned retails for RM 2599 or on contract for RM 1699.

I played with the Desire after that and I think I may prefer HTC Sense over the Samsung implementation.

A demo set being built for demo purposes? Rarely hear about that. The phone I was playing with was empty in most cases, so don't think that may have been the issue. But the battery was running low so I could not test things like the camera. Like my other Samsung the phone prevents you from activating the cam when it reaches low bat. I wish they would remove that restriction.

I know @ Pyramid you can buy straight from the roadshow which is in front of j-co if not mistaken. I went to the Maxis center and there was one lady who had a unit so since she was so busy demoing the phone was running low on juice hehe

Tempted but put off by the price tag without contract and also I wish the phone wasn't so plasticky in nature, which is surprising considering that it is suppose to represent a high end Android phone from Samsung.

Got mine today, but is a Singtel set. Got to say, coming from the iPhone platform, it does take some getting use to in terms of the UI and the general workings of the OS. Of course as mentioned, the screen is the star of the show here and when set to max brightness it really takes the cake. However I find that after playing with my friend's HTC Desire, notice that the Samsung UI has a slight tendency to lag every now and then. This may simply their UI implementation or an Android OS issue.

I prefer the iPhone keyboard as I noticed the keyboard on the Galaxy is not as fast (*although accurate) as the iPhone, meaning when I type fast you can see it catching up to what you are typing. Again maybe this is a software bug.

Now, I have not gotten a screen protector yet and I would be glad if anyone can clue me in on where to get one. My default plastic is still stuck to the screen lol, probably get a pouch to carry it along.

Download Net Tracker from the marketplace smile.gif

Edit: Noticed that the T-Mobile version has 4 capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen unlike our version.

Samsung Vibrant is the T-Mobile version of the Galaxy S with a design belonging to them (*note the 4 capacitative buttons).
Samsung Epic 4G is for Sprint and has a hardware keyboard and LED flash but also based on the Galaxy S
Samsung Captivate is for AT&T.

There will be one more for another US carrier. All are derivatives of the Samsung Galaxy S.

I left mine plugged into the wallcharger from last night till 7AM this morning. Went for training, sporadic use which includes facebook, updates, etc etc using Edge only. After that went to Starbucks to surf a bit, then use the FM function when driving back home then now it is...... 42% with wifi turned on for the last 2 hours.

A few things that bug me when using the Singtel version. First is that singtel sticker on the back of the phone and second all the default Singtel apps that I cannot delete tongue.gif

hopefully Froyo will reach us by August, considering that the other 256MB of memory cannot be addressed by Éclair at the moment. Hmm did not know about the "not good to kill tasks bit", still reading that article, but I have been doing that ever since I got the phone lol time to relook into it. singtel sticker I can remove, but the stupid apps cannot remove and cannot even use lol

Just a quick question. Why does everyone need a screen protector if the screen is scratch resistant?
*
Scratch resistant but definitely not scratch proof, some people prefer to have that extra bit of protection for their valuable investment smile.gif

Martin Fields isn't finger print free, attracts a fair bit of prints smile.gif Used it on my iPhone and iPad before before switching to PowerSupport AntiGlare but that will somewhat dim the screen as all matte protectors do. So if you want to preserve your nice screen clarity and have a screen protector which does not dim the screen, then just bring along a cleaning cloth most of the time hehe

by the way what tools do you guys use to convert vids for the GS? I used the default app in the Kies software but the video wasn't sized properly for the screen though it looked good.

didn use video converter coz galaxy s supported all video format except rmvb ....

Was actually thinking more of the Screen resolution. Using the Kies software it doesn't generate a proper screen resolution for the device.

for those who bought the SingTel set, just wanted to check if you are running the FourSquare app. The app seems to think I am in singapore so it keeps detecting SG areas. Others getting this as well?

Ok, guys. When i bought my Samsung it came with a JFX4 firmware.

I had 1 annoying problem with that firmware and that is :

When you get an SMS you get 2 notifications in the top, one a yellow envelope and another white envelope.

Do you guys get this?

And the firmware that originally came with doesn't have voice search in the google widget.

I updated to the latest Euro firmware and all this was fixed.
*
Out of curiosity, if I update to the Euro firmware, would that get rid of 3rd party and native SingTel apps? I cannot stand the SingTel boot screen tongue.gif and yes I do not have the voice search in the google widget but have not seen that notification bug. I am using Handcent SMS so I just turn off the notification for the standard SMS app.
