I tested out (for fun) a Samsung 3D LED HDTV the other day, and I must say.. I was thoroughly impressed by it. The 3D effect was sharp and crystal clear rclxms.gif

Tested before and it seems pretty good =D. But how well the implementation is very dependant on the video source. If the 3D studios do it well, it'll be very very good +D

I agree that only few movies will have the 3D effect. Then there's no point of getting one so soon unless you want to impress your friends. And I don't quite like the concept of having a 3D TV. If you're watching it with a family of five, you'll just need to get 5 3D glass. Imagine you're having an open house. I don't think everyone will be able to enjoy the 3D effect unless you buy those glasses in huge number. Just my humble 2 cent.

True. However they have improved the technology and we don't need to wear red/blue glasses anymore at the cinemas. That really reduce the dizziness side effects.

Anyways, I still have't watched 3D TV in real life. =p

If have to wear glasses, why not just go for polarized? It works on all existing sources and TVs and doesn't make the TV look blur when watching without the glasses.

In theory Astro could take the 3D feed of the World cup and convert it to polarized. Instant 3D.

Anaglyph, however... avoid.

I love watching movie in 3D. No headache at all. But the problem is no subtitle in 3D movie such in cinema. Dunno why. Quiet frustrating.

In theater, currently they used 3D red/blue glasses but 3D TV used transparent glasses (shutter glasses). Red/bue glass can make dizziness effect but not with transparent glasses. U can feel a different.

Only in looks. It's really more complicated than linear polarity. The Dolby 3D that's in Malaysia right now (because theater owners are scared to invest in 3D/digital projection because otherwise they have to invest in 2.40 high gain silver screen) is based on interference filter technology. Using a filter within the DLP projector, it separates each of the RGB light into six different wavelengths. Because of this, some people who are more color sensitive will get headaches.

Imax 70mm 3D uses linear polarity method using two projectors; Imax Digital 3D uses a single 2K DLP projector. RealD uses a single 2K/4K SXRD/DLP projector using circular polarity method.

QUOTE(RAMChYLD @ Mar 25 2010, 10:27 AM)

See above about linear and circular polarity. The thing about 3D HDTV standards is that it doesn't dictate that CE companies to employ circular or shutter glass technology to make it work. It's format agnostic, which means that so long as you can get your 3D tech to work on your TV and BD player, then it's your thing. So in the future, we may encounter complications with active shutter glasses that only works on a certain range of 3D HDTVs.

QUOTE
In theory Astro could take the 3D feed of the World cup and convert it to polarized. Instant 3D.
Not quite. Astro can't convert it to polarized. What Astro is in control of is the MPEG-4 MVC (MultiView Codec) as that is the broadcast/BD standard for 3D. The rest is up to how your 3D HDTV/projector handles the MPEG-4 MVC stream.

QUOTE
Anaglyph, however... avoid.

Agreed.

The reason for no subs is because movies are not made with subs. If you ever watch an English movie in the UK/US, you'd notice this. To put subs in a 3D digital movie is not complicated since the subs would have already been prepared for the 35mm version. However, the local distributor would have to specifically ask their Hollywood studios to embed the subs with the movie so that the subs, like electronic subs on BD and DVD, can be turned on or off.

No subs is a good thing because it forces you to listen carefully and to learn English really fast.

Uh, digital 3D doesn't use red/blue glasses. Again, what you've experienced in Malaysia is the Dolby 3D system. The infitec glasses appear to be red/blue but they are just coatings. True red/blue glasses are anaglyph 3D and doesn't belong in 3D digital cinema.

The majority of screens in the US and around the world uses RealD 3D, which uses circular polarity technology. The main advantage is that the glasses are cheap and recyclable. Some theaters even charge you less if you reuse the RealD glasses (the higher ticket price takes into account the cost of the glasses).

You may also need to upgrade your receiver to HDMI 1.4 so that it can correctly pass through your 3D video signal from your 3D BD player; Panasonic solved this problem with their 3D BD player by making it have one HDMI 1.4 for 3D video and one HDMI 1.3 for audio.

hey guys,

apparently the Samsung 3D LED TV can turn any source into 3D?
earlier I went, they were showing Assassin's Creed II demo in 3D, then the salesperson said you can even watch Astro in 3D...

is this true? I've always thought that the source has to be 3D to begin with...

As far as I know, the only CE that is touting that their 3D HDTV can do an online conversion (simultaneous) is Toshiba because it comes equipped with the Cell chip. Yes, the same chip that is at the heart of the PS3.

You can do 3D conversion but how good they are is a matter of discussion. Personally unless supervised by the director, I wouldn't want a 3D conversion unless it's flawless 95% of the time.

I did! i asked him, how does the TV convert normal video souce into 3D, and he just clicked the "3D On / 3D Off" button on the remote doh.gif

Then I said, as far as I know, true 3D movies are made/directed in such a way that certain scenes would "jump out" of the screen. Normal broadcast (Astro) and non 3D movies weren't made that way. He said "no no, can wan..with 3D tv now you can" doh.gif doh.gif

They demo-ed Monsters vs Aliens and Assassin's Creed II trailer.

Monsters vs Aliens was impressive.. you guys remember the beginning..the dude playing with the ping pong bat and the ball was like leaping out of the screen? It looked really good on the TV

Assassin's Creed II trailer... it was..umm..weird..could somehow sense a little bit more depth, but not "3D"..get what I mean?

logically it is quite impossible for a non-3d to be 3d. the depth of the non-3d is not stored anywhere in the source so how to convert any non-3d to 3d in real time? got that so canggih tech meh? any system can do only if there is input for it.... AI? so clever!

I just check it out at Best Denki KLCC yesterday smile.gif
must be the same sales man.
50" Samsung 3D LED at 18k++ sweat.gif
It comes with only 1 specs and additional one will cause you 1k each doh.gif (According to the sales man).

They convert various mp4 file mainly the korean girl group SNSD... can see that even SD movie file is converted to 3D cool2.gif

Beauty is at the eye of the beholder it does impress me + I'm not a fan of samsung but their 7 series LED and this 3D TV PQ is really better than the rest of the LED TV in the market (i.e. sony, sharp etc).
