Android 2.1 has lots of eye-candy improvements, like the Gallery, Launcher2, etc.

Android 1.6 does not have that much eye-candy found on Android 2.1, but is still usable.

To visualize, Android 2.1=Windows 7 Home Premium ( Nice eye-candy, good functionality)

Android 1.6=Windows 7 Home Basic ( lack of eye-candy, has a lot of functionality though not as much as Windows 7 Home Premium).

Android 1.6 is not outdated yet.

If you are choosing X10 or Droid, go for the Droid. X10 is more of an experiment by SE and is not that future-proof due to its OS.

Droid comes from a company that has experience with previous Android devices (Motorola DEXT) , has the latest OS ( for now) and also has a keyboard.

This's absolutely great explanation!!
Yes, u can have X10 with Timescape and Mediascape interfaces.. But 1.6 Android only.. Plus no multitouch..
Yes, it's only like a specimen from SonyEricsson but maybe firmware update and probably OS too will bring more features.. nod.gif nod.gif

SE X10 limited 2 touch contact point at same time....
Milestone capable multitouch function more than twice compared to X10.

its hardware design on X10 limited these feature.
even Sony Ericsson made an official statement regarding multitouch issue.

IMHO, having used both 1.6 and 2.1 (oh and 1.5 as well, which I am still using happily), unfortunately 2.1 is nothing to boast about at all. It's not much greater than 1.6. Lot's of eye candy improvements, but not really agreeing with Win7 Basic <--> Premium difference as that would imply a lot of functionality loss. For some of them, you would use other apps anyway (eg. Astro file manager, 3rd Party GPS, Keyboards, Handcent SMS, fring, or stuff customized by the phone manufacturers).

In fact, all the applications work the same whether on 1.6 or 2.1.

That said, 1.5 vs 2.1 WOULD be like Win7 Basic vs Premium. Because there are significant differences such as improved Market, Google Map Navigation, better native application support, Text to Speech, etc.

Humbly, I'd put 1.6 as a comfortable baseline.

If anything, all should look forward to 2.2 Froyo for flash support! wink.gif
That's gotta open up a door of possibilities...

I'd said the main advantage of ver 2.1 over ver 1.6 is the multitouch feature.

Especially when you are using the browser this feature really makes your browsing better ; the pinch n zoom function is very smooth and fast. If this is not important to you the ver 1.6 is good enough.

It is the experience of just like driving a car - if you are used to driving a big car eg 2000-2500cc you will never wish to drive a smaller cc say 1300-1600 ( of the same make) . You will still achieve your objective - reaching your destination and possibly same time or slightly longer time on the smaller cc car but the feeling/experience during the journey is different
