Android 2.1 has lots of eye-candy improvements, like the Gallery, Launcher2, etc.

Android 1.6 does not have that much eye-candy found on Android 2.1, but is still usable.

To visualize, Android 2.1=Windows 7 Home Premium ( Nice eye-candy, good functionality)

Android 1.6=Windows 7 Home Basic ( lack of eye-candy, has a lot of functionality though not as much as Windows 7 Home Premium).

Android 1.6 is not outdated yet.

If you are choosing X10 or Droid, go for the Droid. X10 is more of an experiment by SE and is not that future-proof due to its OS.

Droid comes from a company that has experience with previous Android devices (Motorola DEXT) , has the latest OS ( for now) and also has a keyboard.
