QUOTE(New beginer @ Mar 22 2010, 04:52 PM) Basically, overclocking is the process of increasing the core clock speed of a processor, along with other settings. This can be achieved through a few ways, two of which are manual modification of the CPU's settings in BIOS or a software provided by the vendor. Nowadays, vendors have bundled overclocking software with their motherboards to make it easier for consumers. However, the process of overclocking is a tedious one but it can increase overall performance if done properly. Bear in mind that if you overclock your CPU to run at its highest speed constantly, more voltage is required which in turn heats up the CPU considerably. And as you know, the longer an electronic runs at high temperatures, the faster it will wear out due to expansion and contraction of the components inside. And that's when cooling comes in. If you get a good CPU cooler, you can effectively prolong the lifespan of the CPU. Feel free to correct me if my info is not correct, but this is what I know to be true so far. Hope it helps. PS: And yes, you can overclock your AMD Athlon... This post has been edited by Lavey: Mar 22 2010, 05:27 PM |

QUOTE(shirley_andy @ Mar 22 2010, 04:12 PM) yes it will shorten our cpu/gpu/ram lifetime.but how short it will shorten it into? a NORMAL lifetime of a computer hardware is 10year(there are still some P2 and P3 era hardware working out there) so u can estimate how long a computer hardware can live from 5 year lifetime to 3 year lifetime? A normal processor operation temp is 40-60°C some even 70°C and a Overclocked processor with a 3rd Party cooling normally will get 50-60°C so, normally, a 1.8Ghz to 2.5Ghz is counted as light overclocking it can increase 5+- fps which CANT REALLY U CAN FEEL IT normally, Overclocking is just done by computer enthusiast for the purpose of getting higher score in benchmarking program... |

PC Hardwares life is very long(CPU can last 10-20years).
OCing and with Great Temperature Control won't cause anything bad to be happened. Even if it minus some of the hardwares life, just be it. You will change the hardwares after a few years, so, minus it's life about 5-10years(if it's 20years life) is totally good and reasonable. |
