I'm assuming home theater system means you have LCD/plasma TV, AV, amp, DVD/bluray player, etc. Of all these, the AV component consume the most watt. Apart from that, the longer an electric device turns on, the more it will consume electricity due to the heat.
Most home appliances consume high electricity in the form of heat....such as, iron, toaster, rice cooker, fridge, air conditioner. Other than that, your washing machine is also a beast when consuming electricity. So in order to save on your electricity bill, you need to learn how to maximize the use of your appliances with minimal ON time.
Doing things like washing machine on MAX load, ironing all your weekly clothes in one go, turn off any switches/plugs you don't use, open your fridge only when necessary, etc will contribute to save more on your coming bill. There's lots of info on saving in the net...try look it up. Your home theater is only a slice of what your electricity bill is.

I really never thought of my HT would consume much power. I just have an LCD TV, Astro and a DVD player with built in home theatre 5.1.. I heard if we let all this device in standby mode (which means the LED will lit in red/whatever color), it too consume quite an amount of power.

Once a wireman came to fix up my house...he said the no.1 worst is those hot water heater that comes with a pump and pulse function...no 2 is aircon. Anything with a motor in it will be higher.

Some of the following you could consider to safe electricity , such as "turn down the brightness", looking for energy saving options , use built in Tele speakers, turn off your gears, like AVR, DVD players, Blu-ray players. On top of this , use smaller Tele / LCD / Plasma. Adding surge protector could cost more power consumption. Using 3-pin adaptors , also cost danger to your HT. Hope this helps..

Normally, an avr consumes the most power follow by LCD TV / plasma tv. Then, the subwoofer. BDP, media player or DVDP consumes the least power. The last I checked, my avr consumes 700W, power amp at 1,000W and my sub is at 750W, which is way above the projector (abt 240W). Never really bother about it since movie enjoyment comes first

I was wondering about that too. My understanding is that AVR, Amp and subwoofer consumes energy in irregular manner. If u use more, it consumes more.
Meaning that if u play less boomy videos, subs being utilises less, it will consumes less. If you tune up the volume, subs and amps consumes more power to drive the speakers, hence it consumes more in the end.
Pls anyone can correct me if I am wrong. I am learning too.

From what I have experience before,HT system not consume much electricity compare to other electricity gadget base on heat like water heater, iron, aircond. For a month I only have to pay 10%-15% extra for my HT system. In 1 week I enjoyed 3 times with two hours until three hours per movies. For me it's worth for what I have paid...

If u are scare of consuming more electric then dont turn it on n put for display will do. Common sense will tell u that anything that plug to the 3 pin plug will use electricity but its a matter of more or less, depend on your usage.
