Definitely not, if its exposed to lightning , your gonna regret. If you a lightning protector, probably its wise to leave it On standby 24/7

Are you going to switch off and on the Main Power everyday? Did you do that to your old CRT TV?

Was asking Thread Starter, not you biggrin.gif . Anyway surge protector is next to useless. Any lightning strike, if strong enough, will still fry your equiptment brows.gif

Actually I don't use any Surge Protector, but I still put my LCD TV on standby 24/7. On top of that it's connected to the conventioal Aerial (I don't have Astro), which acts as a lightning rod. I take my chances because I am lazy biggrin.gif

To tell you the truth, last time I used surge protector before, but when lightning strike, the equiptment connected to the surge protector was damaged. The irony was the equiptment not connected to the surge protector in the same wall outlet was perfectly alright doh.gif

get belkin which came with insurance.. But dunno how easy to claim the insurance if anything happen.

I also heard even you switch off it's useless coz the lightning can still do some damage unless you completely disconnect the plug.

I always leave on Standby mode when at home cause the plug in hard to reach. Also, when you have kids around handling the plug is a situation you wouldn't want.

But when I go out of course I unplug it.

Now i'm thinking whether the lingtning strikes TV through AC Power plug, or Arial plug..

AC Power line has 2 fuses equipped inside AC plug and inside the TV Unit, one of them will blow due to overloading power input to protect the TV. In this case, repairing cost will not be expensive.

In other case, lightning strike through Arial will damage much component inside the TV.

If so, can we watch movies in the storm weather with Arial socket unplugged?

Both. In case of power line, fuse only protect for life terminal, lightning can strike through neutral cable or even earth if your earthing is not good. But it can still strike though life if your fuse is slow in reacting.

Only in heavy thunder storm and on long vacation, do I unplug the electrical/electronic stuff. Even the telephone line and TV/Asstro aerial cable.

Lightning strike can either be through both Aerial and AC, just your luck.

If nothing happened to your old TV all these years, chances are your area is not lightning prone area. So it's up to you whether you want to buy surge protector or not. Like previously mentioned, even a surge protector doesn't mean you are safe.
