Actually there is.
Just that normal users might not appreciate it.
Having 51 focus points and a more precise focusing system is a major improvement.
Besides, u get weather sealing, better metering system, a better body ergonomically (Subjective) and also more control buttons.
Image Quality wise, it's said that both comes very close to each other, but there are still a lot of difference on the D300s which D90 users will find it pretty appealing.

Btw, i'd say wait for the D700 replacement if you intend to go FF. The time should come when the D700 gets a facelift or a new FF is introduced.

I agree that nikon has more buttons and more ergonomic, I thought that it is very subjective too, but then after using nikon, i really find that the controls are great (but nikon menu sucks).....
