Hotshoe won't help prevent the scratches as it will only prevent dirt from sticking at the contact points of the mount bro. The scratches are inevitable if u mount flash but if u use it properly won't have noticble scratches. At least mine doesn't

alright.. here's the reason why u need an external flash.. not much of poison but facts

1.1 external flash allow u to control where and how u bounce. it's much more usable to produce nice photos. compared to pop-up flash, pop-up flash creates v harsh flash which wont allow u to get the nice 'effects' that u wish.
1.2. pop-up flash is a little more yellowish from what i've tested hence affecting ur pic colour temp
1.3. external flash u can use for strobing. what is that? google for it.. it's technically using the external flash to fire off the camera via a trigger (on in this case using the d90's pop-up flash as a commander to trigger it). u can create dramatic photos with it due to the flexibility of placing the external flash

2.1 does light trails require external flash? no.. it's more of setting ur shutter to open for a longer period to 'record' everything and combining into a photo. hence, long exposure gives u light trails.
2.2 other than light trails, long exposure can help u get the misty effect of waves, river streams etc etc.

so tired to type all these. once tutorial done i submit to all lecturers here for checking and critisizing thankiu!
