Upgrade to Win7. WinXP is a b**** to work with on HDMI. Problem with WinXP is it doesn't support PAP. You need Win7.

you get a core i3 which can do hd audio.
doesn't look right if you get 365 which can't do hd audio. then after reading the forums for a while, reading how good and better hd audio to some ears, you're inclined to experience hd audio yourself in your setup.

then you're inclined to sell off the used 365 to move up the ladder.
by then you're gonna regret getting the 365 in the first place seeing that a used 365 won't fetch that much money. you're gonna have a hard time selling the avr which can't do hd audio.

But i also tested it on my desktop pc on clone screen..Same issue.. I think most probably is HDCP issue cannot clone screen on blu-ray playing.. Extended display is alright.. Anyway, still satisfied with RGB cable connection and the secondary clone screen im not always on it also..

There are.. But i cant use smaller screen as i believe Clone screen needs both same resolution display..

I was thinking along this line earlier as well. Here's what I think..

1.  If you are one of those that prefer a full set Midi system that does everything out of the box... then media player is for you.  No tweaking required, just occasional firmware update ....

2.  If you are one of those that like to buy hi fi separates, with cable buying separately, potential for component upgrades in the future (eg. change the basic CD player to something that cost RM50K  ) Tweaking the Clock, change cable... etc.. Then HTPC is for you.  The advantage is HTPC is to be able to update software and play any types of files you can imagined. Furthermore, if 3D and HDMI 1.4 become standard, the most you need to change is the graphic card.. If you got the money, you can also upgrade from motherboard sound chip to audiophile grade soundcard too.. the sky's the limit ! 

But if you share your TV with your grandparents, perhaps a media player is more userfriendly.  So it really depends on your usage at home.

why don't you try a media manager like xbmc or media browser?
don't have to browse the folder one by one to find your mkv files. looks much nicer too

use xbmc lah. for mkv it has the best and easiest interface and configuration.

if he can get ember to get poster and fan art, i guess he didn't set the folder content as tv series or movies.
set it as tv or movies and the info will show.

set it in xbmc, not in ember.
go to videos, where you added your movie folders. right click or press 'c' to bring the context menu.
edit source -> set content

then close everything, bring out the context menu again -> scan for new content. it should show. or you could update library.

i'm using the same interface as this:


the skin name is rapier. the reason it's being used is because the rating is shown together with the title and other info when browsing the poster wall. other skins hides the rating and just show the title of the movie.

xbmc is used solely for my mkv whereas my bluray collection are in media browser. xbmc can't handle bdmv properly and media browser don't have resume function when playing mkv. so i use them both.

i have a plan to build a htpc by the following parts:

4gb ram
any 5 series with hdmi port (cheap) recomand?
around 550w psu
2x 1tb hdd
medium casing like cm centurion.

i have a question abt the 5 series gc...any cheap and good gpu that can allow me to play those x264 files smoothly? and if a hdmi port gpu...connect directly to my lcd tv port..will it be able to use my lcd tv speaker?
