According to the specs of HD4850, with HDMI adapter you'll be able to get 7.1ch audio

Source: http://www1.sapphiretech.com/cr/products/p...ew.php?gpid=244
*
let assume managed to get the compatible dvi-to-hdmi adapter and able to get out 7.1 sound.
but I can confirm 4 series only can do 7.1 PCM. HD Audio Bitstream is not possible.
IMHO, I will sell out the 4 series card (I have 4850 before too), then get 5 series card since now are very cheap. (since 6 series are out already, I assume you're serious HTPC freak but not hardcore gamer)

already tested using the DVI-HDMI adapter ... able to output the video but no sound =.= ... i wonder how the sound input from my pc to my HD4850 GC ..
*
4000 series ATI have own sound chip on the card itself. so your onboard sound card or pci sound card are useless when you want transmit from your HDMI. only older type of video card are using the SPDIF cable connect from sound card to video card inside pc.

Although I did not compare side or side before...
for me, if I only have option either Intel Clarkdale and ATI 5450.
I definitely go for ATI 5450 because I don't trust Intel can beat both ATI or NVIDIA in 3D game performance... show me if got result sharing.
Maybe Sandy Bridge will make it different, let wait for next year and search for review if any...

This Zino HD review claimed
Is this true?

Source : http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/podcast/2010/0...ron-zino-hd.php
*
partially true. zino should able to get 5.1 dobly digital.
ati 4000 series card only can transfer PCM 7.1, but not hd bitstream TrueHD and DTS-MA. Start from ati 5000 series card resolved this issue.

at last managed to get HD audio from my htpc...
but 1080p playback, with 20-30gb mkv (with HD audio etc) is not so smooth. Playing but not smooth as expected.
Any config that i can do? any website that i can refer...they are like thousands of guides out there and not all actually works..
got problem with the subtitle too...for BDRIP (i.e. files in folders, not single mkv)...

dear sifus, i have a 5.1 speaker and a hd tv. Pls correct my setup if wrong.

1) normal usage using tv sound = hdtv via hdmi > PC
2) during movies / games
= display would be hdtv via hdmi > PC
= audio would be avr via optical > PC

the reason for this type of connection so that i wont be switching on the avr for normal usage. However, with this connection for movies I will have to mute the TV rite? kinda troublesome.

Pls enlight. tqvm!
*
I think no more better solution, either I mute tv volume or change to external speaker in tv setting (watching local tv channel also go to avr? doh.gif haha... )

but my connection more simple way, which is only:
PC-->HDMI-->AVR-->HDMI-->TV
so for normal pc usage, I just using my USB tiny pc monitor soundbar, settle. but only using main screen which is my pc touch screen..

hi all, need ur advice, i m thinking of getting a notebook as htpc replacement + some mild gameplaying.  i m eyeing on a decent nb, the proc is capable of doing intensive motion interpolation (i like 60fps), the discrete gpu could bitstream hd audio as well, got gigabit lan for media streaming, bluetooth for keypad control, anything else is lacking? hmm.gif  thks
*
wah, nowadays there is many model of nb available meet your requirements above. share with us which few models you already eyeing... let's compare and see...

hi all htpc honor owners, just wondering why most of u had chose to set up htpc pc system over notebook? any complication about nb? thks!
*
what is the size of notebook will you get? typically notebook only can fit 1 hdd, 17" or above have second hdd option.
I guess most of htpc owner main concern are storage. of course HD playback capable is a MUST. if can spend more, NAS are best ideal.
but NAS pricing quite stable sweat.gif I meant rarely drop crazily.. else, economy way will be always plug and pull the usb ext drive.

for me, I don't think I gonna get notebook for htpc purpose. my htpc is my movie hub or center collection. sharing for other computers and download and it's never shut down. I don't think there is a notebook tahan lasak enough to replace it for long run.
my notebook is for mobility when I need to go meeting or working travel surfing net at hot-spot or public.

djlah & lightastral, pts noted, thks 4 enlightening. just tempted by sandy spec n need some mobility at times; if study room's tv occupied by kids for wii playing, i can move to living room's tv for movie watching
*
ic.. difference scenario. I only have 1 place for watching and it's my downloading rig too at permanent location.
for your case, you have two places, i guess notebook it's your need icon_idea.gif so no need to spend 2 htpc for 2 locations.
assume you did not use for downloading stuff..

Intel just agreed pay the loss sue by NVIDIA. and NVIDIA close the case and both agreed on NVIDIA Optimus. so we will see even more model in market offer Optimus. I really like this feature in notebook. it's really help in power saving. but sadly, it's not gonna happen on latest processor and chipset for Desktop from Intel. other chipset maker like NVIDIA & ATI have this features offer for desktop but no more upgrade since NVIDIA Hybrid Power with 9300 and ATI Hybrid CrossFire X with Radeon HD 2400.

what about the amd 785 motherboards?

it has Radeon 4250HD, does it come with 7.1 channel?

if you refer to analog, no problem.
if HDMI connect to your avr, only possible to PCM 7.1 but unable to do HD Bitstream.

Hey peeps,

Did some basic reading on HTPC. I'll keep it short.

Say, if I have a :-

- PC
- 5.1 sound system
- LCD

I have quite a collection of HD/BRrips/.MKV movies. So can I hook them up like below ?

speakers <> PC <> TV

Will I have a decent/good 5.1 surround sound experience?
notworthy.gif
*
your 5.1 sound system is PC speaker, component home theater or HTiB?
your pc have wat connection? hdmi? coxial out? or only analog?
