I've only tested once on Toshiba Regza RV600E FULL HD, full resolution , watched blu-ray through my BD-ROM , awesome..

1.3 k , but how much the games cost you?.. Blu-ray disc doesnt cost you that pricey cost like PS3 games..

So, its definitely a budget setup however..

Find a sound card which can stream DTS-HD-MA, (Lossless better), or plug your AVR to soundcard and output from AVR..which is compatible with 5.1 , 7.1 etc

PC graphics are much far superior then PS3, for console lovers , they can opt for PS3, in terms of playing blu-ray tru HTPC is still considered budget setup..
*
PC gfx is superior, so what? My PC set up is about rm20-30k but PC games still suck coz even after spending so much money, the game still lags on my puny little 30" monitor n we're still at the mercy of Microsoft Windows n it's perennial crashes. Some games like Microsoft's very own big game like Gears Of War won't even start after installation.

PS3 game is guaranteed super smooth experience. Just put the game in n play. Best thing is, I'm sitting in a super comfy lounge chair with wireless controller in hand n gaming at 1080p on a 60" screen in my living room. Can even call friends over for some havoc with multi player FIFA session. Try that with a PC. Best thing is, the PS3 set up costs only half of my PC set up.

For PC user, normally they custom the pc setup for movie&gaming purpose, as for game console supporter, no need to think about the intel/AMD, motherboard, ram, graphic card..etc.
For bluray playback purpose, maybe u have to spend "2x PS3 price" for the best graphic & hd audio bitstreaming of HTPC.
All these up to individual's different favourite.............

You bitstream through your Sound card not BDROM.. BD-rom doesnt have the audio connector , it all comes from your soundcard to the AVR etc..
*
I'm using ATI HD5570 and right now i can bitstream HD audio from m2ts file to AVR.
So can I bitstream from my ATI when playing blu-ray using BD-ROM? icon_question.gif

the only real difference between the PS3 and HTPC is for multiformat HD content... BD quality wise, its already 1080p for Video so there really shouldn't be any difference in terms of quality...

HTPC may have the advantage of being able to play .mkv and other media files that the PS3 isn't able to... that's about it I believe.

you think wrong.
nowadays people don't have to buy a HD soundcard to enjoy hd sound. enough with a display card that supports hd audio bitstreaming through hdmi (like the ati 5 series).

yea, get an ATI 5xxx series VGA will do the job for both HD video and audio

HD 5850 spec :

Integrated HD audio controller

* Output protected high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI with no additional cables required
* Supports AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats

however, of cos you still need a HDMI AVR as well haha...

advantage HTPC to PS3, i guess its just reading extra video format in softcopy way (mkv, m2ts, bdiso)
