Just wondering, have anyone tested out the playback of Bluray disc on a HTPC????

I read somewhere that a good Bluray Rom will out do a ps3 in terms of Bluray playback. But is this true???ps3 owners??
The main point is, Can a Bluray Rom on a HTPC out do, or maybe match the quality of Bluray playback from a bluray player/ps3????

If it can, how much is the quality difference? Thinking of buying a Bluray rom, but in a dilemma of getting a PS3 too.

I used to have PS3 (once upon a time), connected to Toshiba Regza FULL HD 42'. PQ is awesome , 1080p is awesome , either games or Blu-ray movies. I still can recall watching The Eye (Jessica Alba), on blu-ray.. fantastic PQ , AQ is just simply mind blowing..

But once my PS3 era gone away..i swithced to HTPC , provided with Sony Blu-ray BDU X10S. Watching on my Acer FULL HD monitor, still no differences apart from ROM does not have audio output, output from Soundcard obviously..

So, i think it depends how you gonna enjoy the fun, either PS3 / ROM on HTPC, also if you have extra $ get Blu-ray ROM and Logitech 5.1 Speaker with Optical output or PS3 with Logitech 5.1 Speaker (Optical output)...forgotten the model name..

So...we are whom to choose what we want..now choose..

I've got both, and they both got awesome pictures, the only advantage of HTPC I can think of is you can tune the colour of the picture to reference standard without additional box such as dvdo duo or lumagen.

The one problem with a HTPC is that most ATI or Nvidia cards have some form of problem or the other. Some do not pass Blacker than Black some Whiter than White. These are not important since u can still setup brightness and contrast. My main problem with the graphic cards is the inconsistent gamma performance. You either got to crush blacks or settle for a bad gamma curve. As you said, u can use some transformation to get the colour points on target, but gamma remains an issue.

yes, i m thinking of setting up a htpc also , as bd-rom / ati 5 series is much more affordable now and can play arguably unlimited ripped format too so long as u get the rite codec , just that the disadvantage is the hassle of setting up, booting, tweaking and maybe the infamous bsod...

PC graphics are much far superior then PS3, for console lovers , they can opt for PS3, in terms of playing blu-ray tru HTPC is still considered budget setup..

For a game maniac, owning all consoles and HTPC should be mandatory. Definitely can't get HTPC for under RM500.

Sony BDU X10S mine, loads faster, detects any type of Disc, rips movies faster than DVD RW, and of course , plays Blu-ray movie with the help of 3rd party Movie playback software..like PowerDVD9, Corel WinDVD10 etc..

I dont read other than Blu-ray disc on BD ROM. When i first bought it , i just tested..thats it...never run other than Blu-ray disc, Sony known for sensitivity issue..even my first ROM stopped playing , cause i tried to play DVD, but luckily got warranty claim on the spot cause lense spoiled..

You bitstream through your Sound card not BDROM.. BD-rom doesnt have the audio connector , it all comes from your soundcard to the AVR etc..
