Working Towards A Broadband Nation - YTL Communications Collaborates With Samsung To Expand 4G Network And In-Building Network Coverage
Kuala Lumpur, 24th February 2010 – YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, which will soon launch its 4G network in Malaysia, today entered into contracts with Samsung Electronics (SAMSUNG) to increase the numbers of base stations for its nationwide network buildout and to acquire innovative in-building solutions for superior in-building coverage.

Under the arrangement, SAMSUNG will provide additional 500 WiMAX 2.3 GHz radio base stations to expand coverage. This is in addition to the 1900 base stations currently being deployed. SAMSUNG will also supply 2000 units of smaller base stations, or picocells, for In-building network coverage. SAMSUNG picocells are innovative, small and cost effective base stations and best suited to provide superior in-building coverage.

The agreement underscores YTL Communications’ aggressive pursuit of building toward a broadband nation and marks SAMSUNG’s dedicated and full support of YTL Communications’ deployment of 4G services in Malaysia. SAMSUNG will share its WiMAX expertise and provide YTL Communications with best-in-class WiMAX base stations and picocells, enabling YTL Communications’ vision of creating a nationwide 4G network to bridge the digital divide.

SAMSUNG is the world’s first and foremost mobile WiMAX equipment provider, having launched the world’s first commercial service in Korea in 2006 and serving as supplier to 23 major WiMAX operators across 19 countries globally, such as Clearwire in the US, Yota in Russia and UQ Communications in Japan. SAMSUNG is in the vanguard of Mobile WiMAX adoption and evolution globally.

“Action speaks stronger than words. The acquisition of additional base stations and picocells from SAMSUNG is a firm commitment we are making to deliver our vision of a nationwide network to serve all Malaysians.” said YTL Communications CEO Wing K Lee. “Together with our world class partners, we shall soon deliver mobile Internet to the urban and rural communities across the nation,” added Lee.

“We would like to thank YTL Communications for their continuous confidence in us. As a global WiMAX solutions provider, we shall apply our experience from successful implementations throughout the world to support YTL Communications business goals and we are very excited to play a role in creating the world’s first nationwide 4G network here in Malaysia,” said Mr. Woonsub Kim, SAMSUNG Executive Vice President and General Manager of Telecommunications Systems Division.
AND THIS TOO....THEIR KEYWORDSThe future is all about sharing.
We all want communication freedom in Malaysia. The Internet enables just that, breaking down barriers and encouraging a constant exchange of ideas.
Yet as we rely on it more, the infrastructure needs to grow. We need fast Internet speeds, reliability and nationwide access. For Malaysians to be able to enjoy a truly connected lifestyle, someone’s got to build it.
That's where we come in.

rclxms.gif AND THEY ARE REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT PROVIDING FAST, RELIABLE, MONEY WORTH POLICY......SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM STREAMYX, P1WIMAX, CELCOM, ETC, ETC.

YTL Comms set to launch nationwide 4G network

KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Communications Sdn Bhd is poised to become the first in the world to launch a nationwide 4G network, offering state-of-the-art mobile Internet connectivity to Malaysia.

The communications utility of YTL Power International Bhd said it is committed to purchasing one million units of WiMAX single chips from GCT Semiconductor.

“This purchase agreement demonstrates YTL Communications’ commitment and marks GCT’s dedication to fully support YTL Communications with its deployment of a nationwide 4G service in the country.

“GCT will share technical expertise and provide YTL Communications with the most advanced and lowest power WiMAX chips available on the market today, making YTL Communications’ vision of creating a complete ecosystem with nationwide mobile Internet service using 4G a reality,” it said.

The one million units purchased will be consigned to key original design manufacturers selected to provide innovative 4G devices to YTL Communications this year.

GCT is the market leader in providing WiMAX single-chip solutions worldwide, holding the largest market share based on WiMAX chipsets sold and number of WiMAX subscribers currently using GCT’s technology.

YTL Communications chief executive officer Wing K. Lee said the announcement marks another important milestone for the company.

“Driving economies of scale is central to our ecosystem building effort as we develop the world’s first nationwide 4G network,” he said. “This significant order — amongst the largest in WiMAX history — ensures our future customers will have the best price-performance in 4G products and solutions.”

GCT president and chief executive officer Dr Kyeongho K.H. Lee said the one million-unit commitment by YTL Communications will firmly secure GCT’s leading market share position.

It all boils down to Telekom in the end, they still own the backbone that even P1 and this is going to use. So what's the difference? The pricing is still going to be around the same, the speeds offered should be around the same, the performance should be very good in the first few months unless there are more and more adopters then it'll end up like how P1 is right now which is also the same as Streamyx, complete crap.

They can talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? I hardly think they can.

agree, discussion of YTL WIMAX is useless until they offer the services, packages, plans, Terms & Conditions (T&C), Fair Use Policy (FUP), coverage, Quality of Service (QOS), and most important of all: ACTUAL USER EXPERIENCE!

There is no way a wireless network can perform better than a wired network, latency wise & eventually speed wise, if TM decides to roll out 100Mbps home package HSBB.

As for latency, wireless network will definitely have a much higher latency than wired no matter how quick the speed can be. Games should stay away from wireless internet as there will be spikes in ping times and it will be affected by environmental factors. (Eg, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure) as this technology uses wavelength over air, those factors will affect the performance. Try going to USA and use a satallite based internet connection, the latency is high (at least 100ms) but the speed is great.

As for speed, as long as the support equipment can support the load, should be no problem (assuming the ISP's back end router and backbone and all other support equipment can cater the global network and if they do REAL TIME bandwidth management). They can have multiple base stations in one area to prevent overloading/bottle-necking of a single base station. If all other factors allow(stuff inside the ISP are good and they have enough capacity), they can have multiple base stations with user limits to prevent congestion and the speeds can go higher than any speed TM is offering to home package users (now max is 10Mbps HSBB). However, if there are really too many users in an area, the "data wave" will get congested no matter how many base stations they have and there will be increased latency ( lets say your request reaches another base station you are not connected etc )

One should still remember, we, Malaysians are heavy internet users. With all that downloading and streaming, the total international bandwidth we have is unable to support all the load. We are not Japan or Korea which have their own independent fiber optics cable to western countries. We are not Singapore which is just a small nation. Our bandwidth currently relies on other people's cable links to the Western World, where all the content is. Perhaps soon we should start our own cable project and then be the one selling bandwidth to other Asian countries.

talk is cheap. P1 ads also claiming to offer best internet connection. But still crappy. That is due to it being wireless technology. There is a reason why WiMax failed in Australia.

YTL only wimax service. We shall see but I highly doubt it will be better than streamyx or jaring. Cause no wireless can beat a wired connection.

Flashback to 1995, when I started to use the internet (dialup), it was Jaring who was the premier Internet Service Provider. Jaring used to e-mail us notifications on system downtimes and connection problems beforehand.

Then in 1996 or so TM played catching up and then it's history. Why? Because Jaring couldn't match TM's resources as they are controlling the last mile connection. I heard Jaring was planning to offer wired Broadband services nationwide since more than 10 years ago. Any news then? Why then?

If YTL is going to do something different to really "kill off" Streamyx etc., it has got to be WIRED BROADBAND. And that's going to cost ALOT of $!! Are they willing to?

if your P1 Wimax is bad, please don't hope anything.. There won't be any two different wimax operator servicing the same area.. just keep enjoying/suffering (whichever applicable) your current wimax.. tongue.gif

icon_rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif JUST RECEIVE THIS FROM THE CEO'S OFFICE....

QUOTE

We’re currently deploying over 2,400 WiMAX base stations nationwide plus additional 2,000 micro stations (picocells) for in-building coverage. These are for superior 4G indoor coverage and to cover at least 65% of the nation’s population. Besides that, we procured 1 million WiMAX single chips to be embedded in our varieties of devices such as mobile phones, netbooks, laptops, etc.

Our value proposition from day one is to provide seamless mobile Internet coverage and complete 4G experience for consumers and businesses alike. We will do this by making the coverage nationwide at one go. We plan for Q3 soft launch whereby we will make the 4G services, rich contents and applications and some devices available for live trials in selected areas. By Q4, once we have sufficiently cover the populated areas, we shall commercially launch the 4G service.

We can’t disclose the pricing or the actual speed just yet but it will be for sure significantly faster than what we have at the moment in the wireless broadband space.

YTL has a good reputation as an infrastructure builder. It builds power stations, office buildings, bridges, highways, high end properties, townships, hotels / resorts and ERL railway. The world’s first nationwide 4G network right here in Malaysia is the next testimony for YTL’s building expertise. With this tradition of excellence, an able leadership from a wireless veteran from the US, supported by a team of experience telecommunications / IT specialists, sound financial backings from the YTL Group, and technological know-how from Clearwire, Cisco, Samsung and GCT, we have the right ingredients to make it happen!

Tell your friends that they will hear more from us comes this July-August!

Best regards,

Corporate Communications,
CEO’s Office

As for latency, wireless network will definitely have a much higher latency than wired no matter how quick the speed can be. Games should stay away from wireless internet as there will be spikes in ping times and it will be affected by environmental factors. (Eg, temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure) as this technology uses wavelength over air, those factors will affect the performance. Try going to USA and use a satallite based internet connection, the latency is high (at least 100ms) but the speed is great.
I don't really mind about the high latency if the price is right and no capping. The price should be less than RM50 for the premium package. But I think it would not happen here in bolehland. sad.gif

Any wireless broadband internet with price over RM100 is a rip-off.

YTL=YMAX ... http://wikimapia.org/9911263/YMAX-Sdn-Bhd. Wirelines and wireline have their niches and applications. Even Bill Pintu Pagar tried and failed with his Teledesic. The battle between wireless and wireline continues ....

I really doubt that, notin is free, no business is charity..." why did I said all that?"
Coz am with the mention company for 12 year & still am. I'm also used to be in "theirs IT Division"

From the dail up era till now the am still with Streamyx, from kuantan to KL both of my home hook up with streamyx. "as if I got any other alternative which is better than fxxk up streamyx vmad.gif "

Just let see & wait, If the project successfull its a bonus to us "end user" having an alternative option. Let see if the mention company willing to give Trial Run "Beta test" for theirs WIMAX & am hoping a discount rate for theirs employees also, if they decide to go public with theirs WIMAX. Hoping with Low rate & no capping bullshxt & free installation fees.

No matter which ISP you use, everyone in Malaysia is using TM internet cable.

So-called competition is nothing since P1, Maxis, Digi etc all pay TM to rent the internet cable - TM holds the only internet cable license for this country.

wrong. Do more factual research please.

P1, YTL, Maxis - Don't expect them to suffer losses for your benefit. Business is business, unless a higher power comes and says otherwise.

The license is awarded to certain company which is not meant for them to operate the Wimax but to let them sell to 3rd party later at a profit.

Like our car AP license.

i do prefer P1 tho. i have been using it for quite some time (almost a year) and i didnt have problems oso. Plus P1 expanding their coverage and stability. Now got new products some more and one friend got try and he said so far no problem. i still go for P1 lor. No need wires somemore...all wireless.

Added on June 30, 2011, 11:44 amsomemore P1 is purely a broadband company...not a telephone or telco company. so their core business memang is broadband. so they specialize to work only on that ma. if me, i let P1 upgrade and improve their coverage and speed.

It's really sad. Overnight they went from best to worst. And sumore their tech staff still deny blocking even though it's evident that an iproute block is in place.

Yeah...im guessing they couldnt the sudden huge amount of subscribers pouring in. but i guess now things are much more stable and better. My P1 ONE plan is working very well...not much problems. Just that when raining is a little bit slower but still quite okay. P1 is back on its feet in delivering service...i hope they'll improve more.
