Actually ive done it several different ways..
You can use an external drive (or even a thumb drive) to transfer files into your PS3, or as ive recently found out, you can use Vuze to stream it from your pc to your PS3..im using Vuze now and all i have to do is make sure the PS3 and my laptop (Mac) is logged on to the same local network, then just drag the files into the Vuze application..Vuze will then convert it to a playable format for the PS3..From the PS3 you can either just watch it directly off the network,or you can copy the files into your PS3 hard drive.. Really simple..

You need to use a middleware to play the file in your PC/Mac, then stream it to your PS3. I give up on this option and bought the PLayOn HD.

I started with PS3 with so called all-in-one solution. Then using MK2VOB to convert the MKV file into PS3 readable file. Next, using PS3MediaServer to stream to PS3, but you need to turn on both PC/Notebook and PS3. Now, I owned standalone HD media player and avoid those "mah-fun" Unless your are serious gamer, otherwise no point to invest on PS3. For serious movie hardcore, should consider standalone HD media player or Blu Ray/HD media hybrid like Dune and etc...

Honestly..i'm not a serious gamers like u say. What i thought about ps3 it is simply just transfer HD movies from PC/MAC to ps3 n PLAY but i'm totally wrong.Quite difficult .So the best way is seeking for standalone Media Player is it?What specs i must know before buying Media Player...Example audio/video format, file format.. Better if otai2 can recommend good brand with its price AC Ryan is a good investment but very..very.. hard to find here.Correct me if i'm wrong. For BD player i've found in MUDAH website:
Any review from sony's BDers here...

PS3 is a good media player plaque by a few serious problem.
The biggest problem with PS3 as a media player is that it does not support NTFS. PS3 can only read drive in fat32 format and that means you cannot have 1 big large HD movie file, but have to split to multiple part.
PS3 cannot play HD mkv files directly, but you can remux it using mkv2vob to either a ts or vob files which the PS3 can then play. That is how I use to play my HD movies but have long given up the remuxing process....too mafan.
The other way is keep the mkv in the PC and using a media server like PS3mediaserver to stream the movies to your PS3. Problem with this is that you need to keep the PC on and lag becomes an issue for high bit rate movies.
Best is get a standalone media player. I am currently using the WDTV Live. My friend got a unit of WDTV(1st gen) which he hardly use so he wants to sell at RM250.

I just started fiddling with it lately. In my opinion, it works better as a Media Extender than a Media Player. The PS3 supports Windows 7's MCE platform, dun need PS3MediaServer.
The interface for managing and browsing media locally is very bad. The albums, photos and video files all show up individually in the XMB instead of a "stored locally" sub-menu, making navigating the files a PITA especially when you have tons of CDs ripped into your library (they can only be grouped by artist, genre or year which if your CD collection is very diverse like mine, you'll end up with a messy XMB). It's even worse for videos and photos (since those typically can only be grouped by date, which in my case is not useful at all). Why they don't put a "Local Music", "Local Videos" and "Local Pictures" item in the XMB and put the files into those instead of scattering them on the main XMB menu, I don't understand.
Yes, I dun use MKV and RMVB. All my videos are in AVI format, so it's more universal. But the clutter it creates on the XMB is unbearable to me. At least as a Media Center Extender, you pick the server name from the XMB first (in my case, only one server shows up, my HTPC, which doesn't mess up the XMB too much).
