QUOTE(DonutZai @ Jul 9 2010, 02:08 PM) not sure bout hobby shop but i see JJ sells them >20% higher than retail. most of the time they have the discount stickers on them. what I mean is. the JJ price is the SRP in Malaysia (set by Litt Tak I think; if you go to Litt Tak store in Sg Wang, you can see the price is similar to JJ), while the cheaper price in local shops are actually below the SRP in Malaysia. QUOTE(rayloke @ Jul 9 2010, 01:30 PM) Because the distributor (Litt Tak) gotta do advertisement, point of sale (standees, wobbler etc) , dealing with big departmental stores (jusco, parkson etc) in consignment term (means they ll return whatever cannot sell), promotions, events (gundam competition), Bandai's request of "eating up" those slow moving kits, Bandai's pricing, distribution, government taxes, and now the new safety standard our government comes out with. All these money spent, definitely they would want to earn back the money; they r a business entity too. Hence prices r higher. Whereas, individual shops, who deals with or themselves are parallel importers, basically they can just enjoy the publicity Litt Tak has invested in; putting almost RM0 in promotion. Sometimes, they might able to avoid taxes too. Therefore their prices r lower. It's like a 40km marathon. I fella "gotta" follow the pre set route n run all 40km. Another fella takes short cut. Of course it would be easier for the second fella to reach the destination. Your example is what we call grey marketing, something like what we have with cellphones here in Malaysia; original handset and AP handset, but this is not the case with Gunpla. BOTH retail giants and small private shops could still be buying from LT, yet the selling price could be significantly different, as pointed out by Exiled_Gundam at the bottom.
Although i agree with you that some small shops do parallel importing on their own, which would then justify their lower price.QUOTE(Exiled_Gundam @ Jul 9 2010, 01:57 PM) Actually I think the Jaya Jusco price is the suggested retail price for Malaysia (usually departmental store will just follow the SRP), while the actual price Litt Tak sold the gunplas(which of course within the price they already include taxes, shipping etc) to retailer I think should not be much cheaper than the standard gunpla price in local toy shops. The suggested retail price are not mandatory to be followed, thus shops can sell lower than the SRP if they want (of course, with lower profit margin). This is similar like in Japan also, where most of the time you can see shops there sell gunplas cheaper than the suggested price there (original yen price). If you want to know whether the gunpla stock in a shop comes from Litt Tak, just check on the side of the box.. those that comes from Litt Tak will have their sticker there (I noticed even shop that sells lower than JJ price got their stock from Litt Tak) Assuming that both the retail giant and the small private shop got their stocks from LT, what would be the cause of the price difference?
1 - As pointed out by Exiled_Gundam, retail giants follow the RRP (usually stated in their contractual agreement) while the smaller shops are not bound by such terms. Retailers are allowed to go above the RRP but not lower (as a price control mechanism by the manufacturer/distributor). Current RRP follows Yen X 0.0507. Around that.
2 - Retail giants do a lot of promotional efforts, which require a lot of money, where the costs are then transferred to Gunpla (and other products). Smaller shops do little or no advertising at all. rayloke had a similar argument but he emphasized it on the distributor, LT, instead.
3 - Similar to #2, retail giants incur more costs (hidden or visible), and this again is transferred to customers in the price.
4 - Retail giants aim to achieve higher profit margin. Smaller shops aim for higher sales.
5 - To target the "desperate" customer. When their price is expensive, not many people buy from them, and you might just find some rare Gunpla there. Same argument applies to TimeMachine. Their stocks arrive faster, and they have quite a number of kits that are unavailable elsewhere, all at a higher price.
In another view point: Not necessarily the retail giants are the more expensive ones. In the long run, buying from them MIGHT just be cheaper than smaller shops, considering the fact that they give discounts quite often (-20% and sometimes additional -10%). Yen conversion after 20% discount is 0.04, which is quite close to what smaller shops are regularly selling. Not forgetting that some retailers give membership benefits like cash vouchers when you spend above a certain limit. Also, most of your products have warranty (provided you have the receipt and within the time frame given) even for toys, unlike smaller shops.----------- QUOTE(MyKy44 @ Jul 9 2010, 09:58 AM) whoa i like the Qan-T's sword... » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Have to join up so many parts, it might be flimsy...
