Some excerpts : THX Ultra2 THX Ultra2 Certified products bring the cinematic experience to larger home theaters, 3,000 cubic feet in size, with a viewing distance of 12 feet or greater from the screen. "THX Select2 addresses the needs of the newest generation of home entertainment enthusiasts, those who crave immersive DVD, music and video games experiences, but don't always require the full benefits of a large, dedicated home theater environment. THX Select2 will be used in THX Certified products that are designed for small to medium-sized residential rooms. By contrast, THX Ultra2 is designed for the acoustics of larger, dedicated home theater environments. Both certification programs require manufacturers to build products that meet or exceed the THX standards for presentation excellence, and include such THX features as timbre matching, bass management, adaptive decorrelation and re-equalization (Re-EQ™)." and more info here : http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/home-theater/

QUOTE(anfieldude @ May 25 2010, 05:11 PM) Thanks htkaki. I spent a lot of time on "THX" products about 3 yrs ago. My own interpretation was that is is pure marketing. While I believe it started off correctly, in recent years, THX certification on audio/video is questionable. Getting the certification is something like ISO certification. Those who have been thru that will realise what it takes. A lot of documentation but does it matter? Some come to mind, THX never gives an absolute number for black levels. Yet, on some THX certified Pannys the black level rise is clear. How could that have been possible? My take on Ultra2, is more powerful amplifier with some controlled numbers for distortion. Have to agree on that. Even the cheap PC spkrs also get certified. I have yet to try out Ultra 2 but those really high end brands seldom have THX certification. The THX std has been often more than a marketing gimmick to me and not to mention the extra premium that one needs to pay. If one is to apply a pure THX standard for his/her HT room, it would have cost a bomb to do so here.

QUOTE(paskal @ Feb 27 2012, 05:25 PM) it beats the sr6003 in musicality, transparency, slam and integration between speakers. it sounds better than sr6003 in stereo music reproduction, concerts, multichannel music, and in movies playback. not an easy feat considering the sr6003 is a very good receiver for concerts and music. the preamp section is of higher quality than even anthem mrx300. it beats the mrx300 in musicality, transparency, and especially in stereo reproduction. concert also sounds better on the lx55. again, not an easy feat considering that the resident receiver had its preamp section heavily modified. Perhaps the SR6003 already 'aged' comparing to the new improved LX-55. The LX-55 is impressively more lively and dynamic when I auditioned it at Danny's place compared to his previous avr, Anthem. I must confessed that the Pioneer has come quite a long way compared to the older gen which I had set up before. The only thing is probably it is a tad bright during my brief audition. Still bearable. Still, I bet its upper range models must be quite impressive.

QUOTE(paskal @ Feb 27 2012, 11:25 PM) the newer onkyo that i've heard (*09 series) did a pretty good job with music. audited the 509 and 609 and onkyo did improved the receiver musicality compared to the past series. not as musical as the lx55, but they did a pretty good job nonetheless. and while still retaining the onkyo slam and brutal presentation when doing movies. i would like to think that the 5509 preserved the same trait as their other lower end receivers. that being said i wouldn't really place my bet with emotiva seeing how their previous processor turned out to be. paskal, if Danny did pull the trigger, then we can have a gathering at his place to find out (not beer but root beers )

QUOTE(paskal @ Feb 29 2012, 11:42 AM) but the thing is, a fella in hifi4sale PMed me asking about the mrx300. he said woo kee hong is asking for RM6k+ for the mrx300 after taking over distributorship from asia sound. and the lx55 is selling for under RM4k. for RM6k i'd rather go with the lx55 and keep the extra RM2k for some other component. the improvement from ARC is there, but i don't think it's worth the extra RM2k. On second thought, silly me. The Denon and Marantz avr are expensive too. IMHO, the MCACC still has a lot of rooms for improvement just like YPAO. The ARC and Audyssey is still quite ahead of it.

Yes, both Yammy and Pioneer have strict pricing and control as the companies are doing the marketing and A&P while the other 3 are being done by distributors.

Played with LX55 today. Still not familiar with its GUI. Possibly due to the room acoustic or the power supply, the Cap is 'overpowered' by FV15HP. Nonetheless, with the help of Antimode 8033C and a bit of adjustments, the Cap sounds much better. Still with room for improvement.
