QUOTE(tatsuyachiba @ Apr 20 2010, 11:09 AM) Not sure if this has been posted here. I've stayed at Sawanoya before. Trust me, it's definitely NOT NEAR from JR Ueno station, and it's bloody difficult to find for the first time/without GPS.If you're looking for a ryokan in Tokyo, Sawanoya looks good at around 5000yen/single. Near Ueno station so straight shot from NRT on the Keisei line. Classic budget ryokan with tatami rooms, futon, japanese bath etc. Disclaimer: I have not stayed here before (we have our own place in the Tokyo area so no need for hotels) but it looks good. Had horrible experience of running non stop for 20 minutes around Yanaka for 2 days: - rushed back from my Fuji Tour to check in by 11pm, - rushed to JR Ueno to catch the Keisei densha. However, having said all above, it's pretty neat, clean and comfortable ryokan. Cheap, if compared to other ryokans. The keepers were nice and helpful as well; their family actually waited for me till 11pm for my check-in. Bid me goodbye on my journey back and waited outdoors (cold spring at that time) till i was gone from their sight |

QUOTE(tatsuyachiba @ May 4 2010, 11:22 AM) You do understand that only Kabuki-za will disappear, not kabuki performances, from Tokyo. My regret was for the passing of a grand old Ginza landmark, not kabuki itself. Watching kabuki in Kabuki-za is once-in-a-lifetime experience, imo. So, there's a bit of regret. Of course i'd try catching kabuki shows from the other places, i'm a deculture fan Like I said earlier, this is Japan - kabuki is far from extinct and there are plenty of kabuki fans especially recent converts due to a new kabuki "prince" - Ichikawa Ebizo The Japanese love to anoint "princes" aka enka prince (Kiyoshi), golf prince (Ryo-kun), this-prince-n-that-prince etc. If you want to catch kabuki in Tokyo, there are other places to do so e.g. National Theater (near the Hanzomon line near Tokyo Sta.) and and the Shinbashi Enbujo. If you like culture, you might be interested in other Japanese traditional art-forms e.g. Noh, Bunraku, Rakugo/Manzai etc as well as musical performances such as taiko drums, shakuhachi, samisen etc Btw, nice photos there mastering89. I've had a great time at Ueno Zoo, but the pandas were no longer there. |

QUOTE(Lady Nova @ Sep 21 2010, 02:51 PM) Hi Psy, If it's 3700Y for two persons, it's cheap !Yes, its 2700 yen per room per person, but if you wan to add 1 more person into the same room, then have to add another 1000 yen. More info here:- http://www.spocom.net/pc/hoteiya_e.shtml I've read a comment from a japanese lady staying there that she doesnt dare to go out at night because the neighborhood is not so good.. izzit like Puduraya in KL? Lately, i've read that crime rate has risen in urban Japan, but snatching and pick-pocketing happen everywhere. When i was there, i've always returned to my hostel very late. No problem walking (not ! running !) back in pitch black dark. I could tread past Ueno-koen at 1am feeling secure and safer than my KL neighbourhood at 10am |

I think SUICA is very convenient; stations like JR Harajuku, Shinjuku, Tokyo and Ueno perpetually full with ppl queuing to buy tix. Having a touch-pass card cuts the hassle and saves time.
I've not bought the JR Pass b4, but they said a single Tokyo-Kyoto Shinkansen route pays back the pass itself, so why not ? Definitely getting one the next time im going This post has been edited by matt85: Sep 25 2010, 11:06 PM |

Whoa suddenly this thread become so hot !
Where is the uncle tanoshi ? Busy menyusu anak ? Anyway, Seng Kiat, take bus only you wana go somewhere very specific. If you don't read Japanese, don't even bother lol. Keii-kun, Akiba itself warrants a one-week visit, am i right ? For local tour, be sure to check out JNTO. They offer many good tours and side trips. Fantastic service as well; went for Hakone/Fujisan trip with fellow forumer, Jayhan. The tour leader went great length (ojiisan running against full force wind at 0C !) to help me seated together with Jayhan. For guys, i'd suggest Gundam trip at Shizouka. It's the boys' pilgrimage |
