however i know that they do works like updating minutes books, updating register of member book, attending meetings , prepare thing needed for the meeting, typing resolution , minutes.
So far i still cant see how can a company secretary be one of the most important person in the company

Hie monked,

Are you from Tarc college ? Are u currently pursuing diploma ?

Btw, if you've started on company law, you should know that it is stated in the law that every public listed company is required to have 1 or more company secretary. This means that com sec holds a significant position in the company.

Company secretary sometimes is also known as Chief Administration Officer .. Do find out more in the internet. IT IS one of the important officer in an organisation.

Cheers ~~

Hie Monked,

It is different when you work in an audit firm .
You'll be exposed more if you work in a secretarial firm.

To be honest with you, most of the public listed company out there prefer to hire com sec with experience. Therefore, before you can aim for a job in a public listed company .. you'll have to get experience in secretarial service firms.

Cheers ~

Hi if you really want to know the career prospect join Young Maicsa and meet your peers.

http://www.maicsa.org.my/

The question you need to ask yourself if what do you want to do. If you expect a few years after you graduate you will be able to be attending board meetings and giving advices, i think you need to be more realistic.

Most comsec's ( company secretary ) will start off in the secretarial services companies. Basically every company in Malaysia requires a comsec and the person who qualifies to be comsec are mainly Accountants, Lawyers and of course MAICSA members. Smaller companies that dont have one will outsource to these secretarial services companies.

Some of the key skills you may learn will be the requirements for documents submission/filling with regulators, listing requirements, conducting AGM's...etc

Most of the time big companies will have 1 comsec with a few assistant. They will be there to advise on regulatory matters but rarely get involves in business. Its not to easy to go from Secretarial Firms to be one of these comsec as the number of positions are limited.

Conversely if you are an ACCA / CIMA graduate you can be in Auditing, Finance depts where there are more vacancies and positions...( Exec, Asst Manager, Manager and Senior Manager).

http://jobindex.recruit.net/malaysia_ICSA__trends (0.009%)
http://jobindex.recruit.net/malaysia_ACCA__trends ( 0.161%)

Is the qualification highly recognized in other areas.. not really.

I am not saying this is a bad course to go for but be mindfull of what you are getting into.

industrial training wun let you learn so much actually.....because they treat you like a "visitor"; and therefore, it is really different if you are in the field as a permanent staff

Am wondering in order to become a recognized Company Secretary, what is the path? Do we have to have a degree on Company Secretary or just a short course with examination & registration to Chartered Secretaries Malaysia (MAICSA) will do, also is there any training perior before you can become a Company Secretary for an organization if they want to?

Roughly how long it takes from start till you get reconized?

Is there any good local college/universities that offer quality teaching on this?

Any prerequisites? Part time courses?

I don't think we have those short course....anyway, if anyone knows, just post it here! I wanted to know too

Path, there are a lot

1. Take the ICSA course and get the professional cert and license
2. Complete ACCA course and finish 3 years working experience and get the license
3. Work in Co. Sec firm for 3 years, and interview by SSM then get the license

Correct me if I am wrong

From what I know about comsec's job scopes, it's actually quite a routine-work kinda of job, mainly dealing with document work, not much with people and communications, quite boring I would say.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Any comsec here to share?

Company Sec had two employment options
1) Work for people
2) Open own firm

For option 1
There are limited offers but many candidates. That is why your boss say no use.

For Option 2
You need to have good contacts to build a clientele base. As such, it takes a long time to establish a decent income out of it. Again that is why your boss say no use.

What most people do with an ICSA is use it as a back door into ACCA. The ACCA offer a lot of exemptions for ICSA holders.

My advise is complete your ICSA then go for ACCA. After a getting enough experience you have the option to open your one stop management service center.

Never look down on ICSA.

By the way, I know a few accountants in public listed companies who had taken this path.

Company Secretary is an important position in a company. Do not listen to rumors. The pay is good provided that you choose the right company. The Board members and Head of Departments listen to the Company Secretary.
