Hi Guys,

I find a lot of threads stating their DSLR got issue, lens got fungus, CCD problem but out of all non stated how much they had to pay to get it fixed.

So the reason for this thread is for you (if you want) to share the prices that you had to pay to "fix" your camera & lenses, so that newbies like me will have a rough idea how much will it cost to do something.

I've e-mail to canon today to ask them about their Service pricing below is the info that I managed to get.

Service Centre:
Canon Customer Care Centre
Block D, Peremba Square, Saujana Resort, Section U2,
40150 Shah Alam, Selangor.
Tel: 603-7844 6000, 603-7845 0055
Fax: 603-7845 0505
E-mail: helpdesk@cmm.canon.com.my

Operating hours:
Open Mondays to Fridays from 8.30am to 7.30pm
(closed on public holidays)

Map:
Location Map

Service Duration:
The official service duration for cameras and lenses is 5 working days, though this can go up dramatically if spare parts need to be ordered.

Basic DSLR Servicing:
1.> Cleaning
2.> Testing
3.> Calibration
4.> Fungus Removal

Service Charge:
RM 120 (This charge does not include the cost of spare parts, if any is required)
Minimum charge of RM 30 if a customer cancels servicing.

Added on February 17, 2010, 5:53 pmI did sent them another e-mail asking either the charging is per item or per visit since normally Service Charge is for per visit & not per item charge.

I will keep you all posted on the update.

here is a link from a fellow forumer that clean his own lens: Vincent Pang Web For Lens Cleaning

I also heard that some shop in Pudu Plaza charge cheap.. but dunno how much.. planning to go there in 2 weeks to survey.

I suggest you to send ur item in for inspection and get an official quotation. They do not charge anything if you choose not to service it. I send a couple of my lenses in b4 (some were friend lenses cause i got CPS), and none of it got charged when i choose not to service them because it require to change the entire element instead of just cleaning most of the time.

Try this shop at Mutiara Complex, next to Digi Colour. It's call Cheah Camera Repair or something like that.

Hi Vincent,

Yup, if you are a *CPS member than it will be free, but sadly I am not a CPS member cause I don't own 2 x L series lenses. cry.gif

Thanks for recommending a shop biggrin.gif I will try your recommended shop & survey how much they charge.

p/s: Superb guide on how to clean lenses notworthy.gif , sadly I cant find that hole in my lens in order to open it cry.gif

*CPS = Canon Professional Services

Added on February 18, 2010, 2:26 pmI got update for you guys from Canon.

Apparently the charges are as such.

1 item (body or lens) = RM120.

So for my full set of the below. The Charges will be RM 600.

1.> Canon EOS 30D Body
2.> Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II
3.> Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II
4.> Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
5.> Canon EF 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6

(1 body = RM120) + (4 lens x 120 = RM480) = RM 600.

P/s: Need to find alternative shop. RM 600.. better I just buy new lens.

only 2 of my lenses got fungus & the other 1 got 1 thing right in the middle but the fungus and the thing are not disturbing the picture quality.

So it's kinda ok but bothering me in way. doh.gif

RM 120 for a lens servicing is out of my budget further more my wife is pregnant. biggrin.gif

so I'm trying to find an alternative shop which can fix it way less than canon. I know they are good but money is a concern. Worst comes to worst I just repair 1 item per month... slowly lah.. at least wont suffer that bad smile.gif

I heard before in one of the forums that by keeping your stuffs in a DRY box for sometime it will kill the fungus, any idea is this true? if yes then I dont mind spending to buy a dry box.

Never paid for servicing or cleaning. Benefits of CPS membership. Only pay for parts.

TIP : Just find CPS member to help you send it in. I send in a lot of shit to Canon that isn't mine for all the free servicing.

sensor cleaning? you can do your self but you need to buy the equipment. if you send to some shops they will only charge RM60 for nikon and about there also for canon.

but if you plan to full service your body. then it is always better to send to canon. at least it you know they are reliable.

But doesn't calibration involve the body as well? If not, what's the lens gonna calibrate with? Don't they need a body so they can perfect the lens for that one body? @_@ I'm thinking of sending my 30D in for a service (shutter button hard to press, no warranty), and my 70-200 f4L (got warranty). Might as well send in for calibration and cleaning right? My lens has a tiny speck of dust right in the middle of the lens, INSIDE..can't clean it myself >.<

I thought cleaning dust for lens and body is free regardless of warranty availibility?
Well, I got cleaning dust for lens and body for free when I sent to Saujana.
Just that the kit lens autofocus problem, they quoted RM141, so I chose not to repair it.
Only if it's like fungus, then they'll charge you.

Errr... i dont think so, when I was there I did ask they said they will charge if the item does not have any warranty left.

However it will be free if you are a CPS member. Sadly I'm not.

* Min requirement for CPS eligibility : 1 x XD or XXD canon camera body with 2 x "L" type lense.

Hmm, contradiction with my visit.
Cleaning should be free.
Calibration not sure.
Anything beyond is charged.

CPS eligibility: xxD RM 3.5k, 2 x L lenses RM5.6k
Wa need RM9.1k mininum to become one. sweat.gif

Just came back from Canon Service Centre. Sent my 40D, C24-70, 580II and BG-E2N. Done Lense/camera calibration (free), tighten flash mounting (in-camera - Free), re-flash voltage (for BG battery indication - free) and change new std focusing screen (RM 50). I do have CPS membership but never shown them. I wonder they based on the membership in database or just basically is free from the start.

I wrote email few months back on lense/camera alignment and was quoted FOC. When I turn up to do lense/camera alignment, I did not mentioned about the email, and still FOC. so I believe lense/camera alignment should be FOC. My lense has no issue, just calibrate camera alignment.

hm... let me clarify my experience going to canon:

1.> my 70-300mm lens got fungus.. they say they will charge for cleaning.
2.> my 50mm got some kind of creature in the lens and it was free as it was still under warranty.

Hi Aqua,

perhaps they tag by the camera serial for recognizing you as a CPS?

ya canon is quite flexible sometimes. That why i say, anything just go there. If they quote too expensive, don't fix it. They can't charge you for inspection.

To clear things up, calibration doesnt need to send in ur body, they will calibrate with their system for the lenses.

Hi Bro,

If it was me, I would just live with it or try to buy some leather from a jeans repair shop and use epoxy glue and glue it on.

For you on the other hand... i think the best option is to send it back to canon service center. Just ask them how much will it cost. smile.gif

Well the last time i went for calibration, they told me all lenses are already adjusted within the allowed parameters electronically in the factory, and it is unlikely that these parameters will change overtime. And in order to adjust these parameters to your body, sometimes if required beyond the normal parameter value, they will need your body to do that.

Sure bo? I thought calibration is to tune the lens to work perfectly with an individual camera? Since cameras after awhile stuff start getting loose or whatever. General wear and tear mah, so need to tune the lens so its normal again for your body. Not meh? Lol.

Sent in my 40D + BG-E2n for repairs on Tuesday. BG-E2n's shutter button wasn't working cause of the contacts on the grip and the camera. At the same time also sent in my 70-200L for calibration since it was back focusing a little. Then I thought, why the heck not and asked them to clean my VF and sensor too. One shot do everything laugh.gif

Got the quote today and it costs RM100 to repair it. Calibration and cleaning all free. Should be ready to collect next week Monday or Tuesday thumbup.gif

BTW, all my gears are not under warranty anymore. But I am a CPS member tho.

I posted in another thread which was closed. I have a Canon 300D where the rubber parts (grip and viewfinder area) sort of ... melted or something ( i kept the camera in a dry area with those moisture absorbing stuff). Can it be repaired? My hands turn black after touching those parts, since viewfinder also have same problem, i had a square black mark on my eye without realising it. How much would it cost to change all the rubberized areas?

Hi Guys,

Let me clarify again from what I know.

The standard service charge is RM 120 for any services without parts involved. Thus meaning it is RM 120 + Parts = Total Charge.

*Please note that the above does not apply to CPS members (canon professional services)

I think (/assume) for CPS members there is no service charge. only parts charges.

This is based on my e-mail to canon previously.

let me clarify again from what i have read in the forum.

It seems like you are the only one that is being slapped with the RM120 service charge. None other has it.

It's clearly written on the CPS card that CPS members are entitled to 20% discount on service charge.

I have gone to Canon for so many times, never had them ask me for service charge. Send in 40D for cleaning (out of warranty). Send in my 24-105mm for cleaning and calibration. Send in 50mm f1.8 for gear strip problem. Send in 70-200 for checking. Never got charged. I cancelled my 70-200 and 50mm service because i don't think its worth it. Got back my lens without charges.

My colleague send all his lenses in for cleaning and calibration and didn't get charged. And no he did not show them his CPS card. His CPS card he got it when he owns the 10D. He send in his 40D.

Hi Vincent,

Yup, apparently that is what I observed too from others who replied in this thread. I really wonder why they say like that when I called and e-mailed them.

I think it is better to just bring the item there and see what they say.

Thanks for the feedback bro smile.gif

Hi Bro, I suggest you send it straight to their Service Centre to inquire. They will be able to provide you on the spot estimated charges. If you are a CPS member, then there will not be any service charges.

*if item still under warranty, then free smile.gif
*also note to register your item @ canon.com.my you might get additional warranty.

Thanks bro for the advice. I already sent it to Canon service center in Peremba Square, Subang. The charge was RM279 to replace the whole body of my Canon 550D which I think is acceptable. Next time I will be EXTRA careful in handling the camera to avoid any accidental damage.

Hi Bro,

Just a bit curious, the RM 279 is for Parts only right and is not inclusive of the service charge?

Reason why I asked is because, since 550D is a new camera, the service charge should be lifted.

Not sure.. the Canon personnels only told us RM279 as the total charge. She never mentioned about any service charge. Hopefully there isn't any.. sad.gif

Hi Bro,

From what I know, error 01 is because the lens and body lost contact. Does the body shows the same error message with other lens? If not then it could be that your lens contact point is dirty. If yes, then the body contact point is dirty.

From my experience as a computer techie, you can try using alcohol with cotton bud and clean the contact points.

p/s: Do this at your own risk. Please do it carefully & do not spill any alcohol in the body or lens.

You can call canon and inquire the pricing, better yet bring the item there for them to check. They will quote you an estimate price. If you decide not to do, then there will be no charges.

I'm thinking to send my no-warranty 50mm for calibration and cleaning.

Will bring along with my 7D (still under warranty) body and think they will need it.

I will update here to see what is the response from the Canon. (btw, i will send to Canon Collection Center)

Hi Bro,

I heard for CCC it will take a few weeks longer as they normally send in by batch. If you can wait, then its fine. If not I suggest you send to premba, it's way faster smile.gif

Great idea, please do share with us the detail charges smile.gif (if any, that is)

Hi Bro,

Alcohol as in 100% Pure Alcohol, the Electrical Cleaner that comes in Yellow color cap and normally can get from any electrical shop. Not the Alcohol like JD, Chivas and ...

Try asking Alcohol for cassette head cleaner. smile.gif

Another way is to use cotton bud and rub on the copper point on the back of the lens. however with added alcohol it will have a better cleaning properties. Thus giving you a higher chance of better cleaning.

Alternatively, you can send to Canon tongue.gif

hey guys I'm wondering if bringing in the body or lens to service would affect the sharpness or anything after servicing? I heard people complaining about the sharpness after servicing the lens.

I'm thinking of servicing my 50D(somehow the picture is not that sharp even if I was using a tripod) and tamron 17-50 vc(there's dust in it)

Hi Bro,

By right it would be better, the sharpness of the picture is also determine by the lens. I suggest you send your lens for servicing cause it's rare that the sharpness is due to the body.

Do let me know which one still has warranty. biggrin.gif

Hi Bro,

For canon, it is best if you can send to canon premba. I am not saying that they are the best, but they are the manufacturer.

For others, I recommend you send to YL as they are amongst the cheapest for camera or lens servicing.

hey, this is a rather old post but I too had the same problem with my 300D, the grip melted and became sticky, and when I touched it my hand turned black.. but I read online on people fixing these problems by putting whiskey or any alcoholic thingy on a piece of cloth and rub over the melted part.

so I put red wine on a piece of cloth and rubbed over the melted part, and somehow it helped remove the melted rubber part, and now it looks like brand new... surprising that it worked shocking.gif

Hi Bro,

Basically you can send it to any Canon certified dealer. Easiest are in Mid Valley. However it will take an additional 2 weeks on top of the time it takes Canon to fix it since they will still send it back to Premba.

Any Canon authorized SP will provide service and repair. However it is faster if you send it to Premba Square since that is the Canon Service Centre. Other dealers or suppliers will take additional 2-4 weeks extra since they will also send it there.

I went to YL camera service at pudu plaza few weeks ago to repair my 50mm, i also ask them to clean the lens because the lens got fungus too, so repair plus cleaning cost me rm120 smile.gif

Great price! I sent my 90-300mm there for fungus removal... they charged me RM 90.

It should be. Canon cleaned the sensors of my 40D and 5D and my lenses for free even though the warranty was long over laugh.gif

Actually it is not covered by Canon after the warranty is over, during warranty they will just help you do it.

However, you can get this done for free. Canon every once a year will do a FREE SERVICE (refer below) at Mid Valley Convention Centre. But I forgot they do that on what function. isk..

*Sensor Cleaning
*Lens Cleaning
*Software/Firmware Upgrade
*Sensor Calibration (Only if required, decided by the Technician)

Hi, if i want to send my Canon camera just for sensor cleaning only, can i just do it at any camera shop / authorized Canon shop without leaving my camera with them for few days?

Coz i felt cleaning should takes a while only.
Any recommended shop for sensor cleaning in PJ??

Thanks.

Ah, good thing i found this thread...

I have a 18-55mm kit lens, bought along with my 1000D back in 2009. Recently it just stopped responding i guess, coz it registers focus but it wont let me take the pic. This is especially obvious when I go to the extremities (18 or 55). In the middleit occasionally takes pics. I dont think its a prob with my camera coz my 50mm lens works just fine...

I wonder how much would it take to repair this? I wanna compare the repair price with the price of buying a new one...

Hi... Good thing there's someone else who has this problem. Unfortunately, Canon has yet to reply my inquiries, even after SIX LONG MONTHS. so much for customer service huh... Inquiries to various forums/FB pages also returned nil answers...

Anyway, I decided to just buy a new lens and got myself a 18-135mm Canon lens. Happily snapping pics with it now.

I hope you do come up with a solution to your problem ya smile.gif

I just called them for details. The high cost is because the rear lens is really bad and need to be replaced, so the price is for the replacement part.

I just do the cleaning lah, so it will still leave some marks on the lens sad.gif And it costs me Rm 85. And the camera sensor cleaning is Rm 50.

best to send it back to a CSC. If other than CSC, you might want to try a shop in AMCorp mall. their repair prices are quite competative.

Service Charge:
RM 120 (This charge does not include the cost of spare parts, if any is required)
Minimum charge of RM 30 if a customer cancels servicing.

For the focusing screen it is best to call and ask them directly. Their contacts are in the 1st page.

*Please note the Service Charge is an old price, not sure about the new price

Hi There,

you want to service? repair or buy the above bro? would be great if you can clarify in details.

Nevertheless here is what I know:

Service Duration:
The official service duration for cameras and lenses is 5 working days, though this can go up dramatically if spare parts need to be ordered.

Basic DSLR Servicing:
1.> Cleaning
2.> Testing
3.> Calibration
4.> Fungus Removal

Service Charge:
RM 120 (This charge is based per unit & does not include the cost of spare parts, if any is required)
Minimum charge of RM 30 if a customer cancels servicing.

If you are a CPS member than Servicing will be free. Last I check to be a CPS member you would need to purchase 2 L "Red" Lenses and 1 single digit camera body. Maybe this has changed now.

want to know, if i want to send lenses for cleaning and funcgus removal, would that rm120 includes fungus removal AND cleaning lenses? or is it that rm120 for cleaning and then fungus removal would cost extra (assuming no need to change parts, etc)

also, is the price still rm120 or is it different now?

The charge is inclusive of the fungus cleaning up to a stage, the price of RM 120 I am not certain if its still the same. You can call the Canon service center for more info.

Still receiving the Canon Err 01 after multiple cleaning on the lens contact, will get it to Canon service centre. Hope it won't cost me a bomb. blush.gif

Software repair/firmware upgrades are free if I am not mistaken especially on warranty period. Off warranty perhaps there is a workmanship charge... still less than RM 120.

You can call the center and ask, they will be able to quote you a price or give you a rough estimate.

Sent in my 40D + BG-E2n for repairs on Tuesday. BG-E2n's shutter button wasn't working cause of the contacts on the grip and the camera.
Anyone else having this issue can also try to self-clean the contacts with dry (or with alcohol) cotton bud. Save u the time and money. smile.gif
*Clean the battery contacts as well if your old DSLR keeps dying randomly (with or without the battery grip).

Though this post to be outdated, but just wanna test my luck. Any chance where I can repair my 50mm f1.8 STM Lens? Just bought it for less than a month, It fell off the floor and I'm guessing the focusing thingy has a problem, cant auto/manual focus!

Anyone able to suggest DSLR lens cleaning service in Ampang/Pudu/KL area? My lens cover came off in my bag somehow and when I took out my camera I was touching the lense leaving massive smudges which I seemed to have made it worse after trying to wipe it with a cleaning cloth. Now photos are cloudy when taken in sunny conditions.

Do you have a microfiber cloth like those that clean glasses or computer screen? put your breath on the lense and wipe it. I have chemical solutions for my lenses but most of the time just use my breath to clean it.

Hi guys,

My 70d shutter seems to be problematic just today.

Photos have light streaks that according to some forums indicate a sticky shutter blade. Any idea how much the replacement costs?

Cheers
