Been looking around for some HDTVs and I came across this TV. Apparently it's CNET Aus' Editor's Choice for Jan 2010. Anyone seen this TV? What's the price? There's not much discussion about Philips TVs so let's start one beginning with this TV.

Ya, this is a very nice TV as it's black level is blacker than Pioneer Kuro with the comparison test between these 2. I'm afraid it is quite pricey being their flagship model sweat.gif

i think u read wrongly. so far no plasma can beat kuro black level let alone lcd but this philip got a very good black level. it's also recommended by what hifi.

Added on February 12, 2010, 4:12 pmas quoted by what hifi....

"As for the biggest selling point of all – contrast performance – it’s just as fabulous as you’d hope it would be, the Philips generating pictures that get close to the dramatic depth and punch of Pioneer’s remarkable (and now unavailable) Kuro plasmas."

close....but no cigar tongue.gif

I don't think I read wrongly as they have all the images captured for the comparison. Last time when I google around to survey on the LCD TV and happened to find a link to a website (could not recall whether it is a forum), someone has done the comparison between these 2. The way they tested the black level is switch on the tv without any signal under a very dark environment and the image they captured clearly show that it is blacker than Kuro. Will try to relocate that link

Ah, if it is without any signal the MLL of the Kuro is pretty low. However, I can see how this is so. The local dimming LEDs will shut off when it detects no signal. However, if there is even a little content, the LEDs will turn on. So with any content (even very little) the black levels will increase quite a bit.

In fact, all local dimming LEDs will be absolute black with no signal as the LEDs will turn off completely. However, on actual content, it is not so.

I guess the Philips like all LED backlit sets with local dimming are coming close, but it will be difficult, unless there is 1:1 pixel to LED ratio.

Does anyone here carry this model? Maybe can get cheaper. Or DesaHT?

1:1 ratio will definitely sky rocket the price. BTw, what's the current pixel to LED ratio?

Maybe you are right in that sense. If it could come close to Kuro's black level coupled with cheaper price tag, then it would be more appealing to the majority in the market to own a more affordable and superb set of tv.

If this LCD pictures can rival those of the plasma,I will get the LCD as the LCD will not have to worry about image retention and burn-in especially with astra beyond now where most channel have stupid logo running. Also consume less power.

The review for this panel is out.. Its pretty good that there are 224 clusters of LEDs for local dimming compared to the normal 130+ from competitors.

Trusted Reviews Philips 9704 Review

Edit : I'm not a big fan of how JohnArcher reviews the displays but this is the only one around for now. Also for those not familiar he is a real fan of Philips.

Yeah, read that review. Seems that TR has loads of Philips TVs and they usually get quite high scores.

I personally saw Philips panel in Harvey Norman yesterday, I think they are quite impressive and easily beat series 6 and 7 of Samsung's panel.

Just that the price tag is a bit step, their LED LCD cost RM1k more than samsung's counterpart

Isn't it supposed to rival the Series 8 since they're both local dimming? BTW, which HN you went to?

It's not true 200hz but a combination of true 100hz + scanning backlight (switching on and off the backlight to create the black frame) to simulate the 200hz effect. Similar to Toshiba ZV series but I found it still not as good as those true 200Hz LCD tv but it's a cheaper way to produce the 200hz. Not sure whether Philips will do a better job on this.

That is why I have said before...this are the people who never really enjoy what they are suppose to...the movies and the music. The enjoyed the hardware instead.

For me, I don't go looking for minute differences or pause a screen for comparison. I don't do A/B switch just to look for the difference. I enjoy what I have and so far so good.

I dont agree with your statement, those who keep changing their hardware are those who have enjoy what they have yesterday n need to try what to have for tomorrow but for u, u only enjoy what u have for yesterday but not tomorrow, in other words people like to try out newer gadget after they have enjoy what they have is already old, but of course u must have the $$$$

i don't believe that newer hardware are significantly better than the older generation hardware. For instance, a power amp is a power amp...a newer model might have more features but not necessarily better sound. The same can be said about speakers too....

Manufacturers keep pumping out new hardware with minor features upgrade so that they can empty your pockets....some features you might never or hardly use. What I have might be yesterday product but it more than stand up against many of the product out there today.

why not consider the cheaper alternative, 42pfl9664? yeah, you might be pissed off with the ccfl, but that's about it, the whole specs sheet is the same except that it runs on ccfl. it's rsp is 2k cheaper. you have got to view the unit for urself cuz the pq is great. i've been looking around for a hdtv for quite some time, and evaluated some of the true and not-so-true 200hz motion-enhancer and i must say philips is doing very good with this 9000 series. the crappiest must be the lg. sony and samsung is pretty close but the artifacts are however slightly more obvious. i suppose this might have something to do with the response time which is 1ms, which the closest i know is lg (2ms); as for sony & samsung, not quite sure what's their response time is for their premium 200hz tvs

Saw the low end 40" Philips LED LCD TV 40PFL-5605 priced at RM3399 in the latest Courts catalogue. It came with 'free' Philips HTS-3366 home theater and Philips DVP-3550K DVD player if take up Courts Max Plus 60 installment plan. Not a too bad price for a low end LED LCD TV right?

The hard copy catalogue at my place stated the price at 2nd page.. unless that's the printing error. Latest catalogue with price valid from 28th May onwards. Too bad they don't have stock yet when I asked.

3399 with a free 1199 HTiB and 699 BD player is insane.

I was offered 3999 with the BD player at TBM

If you don't want to take up the instalment scheme, you don't get the 'free' gifts. Only the TV itself at RM3399. Imagine RM29.69 per week for 5 years, how much you have to pay in total for the interest?

29.69x52x5 = 7,719.40

even the TV itself @ 3,399 is already a great deal - especially if you consider the fact it's a LED backlit, it has PixelPlusHD processing and 100Hz at 2ms

I think the definitive price for 40PFL5605 as at June 2010 is 3,399

Wonder if happy hour prices at the fair will bring it down much

the cheaper alternative for the 5000 series would be xxpfl5405. i saw philips website (msia) have em, but they took it down shortly... but you can view it in uk website. anybody knows if the dealers here carry em?
