Since the KRP500 now is abt RM12,000, is it more worth it to buy this than the Panasonic 50 inch S10 replacement?

It worths every cents if you want the unmatched PQ and quality.
By the way, I don't see there is a need for a dedicated thread for this question.

Depending on who is answering the question.

For those who truly appreciate picture quality, it would be worth every sen. IMHO, the Kuro still holds the 'Title' for the best PQ.

Those who is looking for performance over money or plain calculative, might think that getting 2 Pannys would be better since the performance is not that 'distinct' to them.

I agree, for the sheer size, projectors are pretty awesome...however, black levels are not. So if u r a black level freak, at the moment, the plasmas are the thing. When OLEDs do come out, they will be the thing. For most other people, the good old LCD is more than enuf..

Projectors seems better bang for the buck but it has its own disadvantages too. Need total light control. Have to worry about lamp failure and dimming with age. More prone to dead pixels, and you really need a dedicated room for it. You also need to know about throw distance.

IMHO, black level cannot replicate the awesomeness of large screen effect.. tongue.gif

with normal 42-50inch plasma you are still reminded you watching TV.. of course that's why anfielddude got a huge 60incher

but I dont disagree that bigger screen size is better. 50in plasma is not quite there. 60in is too darn expensive sad.gif

I think quite rare.. their QC should be very good.. manufacturer would reject the chip before using them?

Mostly, its caught in QC as the mirrors become stuck during early hours (Early Failure Rate), however, it is possible that due to the wafer fab process that during the manufacturing there is a defect that causes the mirror to be unable to move. As *I has all the patents on micro mirrors (DLP), we all know who to blame. Although, there are reportedly new players coming.

reading more details on the new 3D glasses technology, it may require a transmitter from the TV to control the active shutter on the glasses.. (hence why pana giving away 2 glasses with their new 3D TVs, not to mention HDMI 1.4 required for FULLHD 3D)... if that is the case, I think not very attractive to spend so much (5figures) on old TV models liao..

If 3D excites u, and u can wait, then I think u shd.

In my opinion, we will see 3D fully mature in 2-3yrs time. End Q3/Q4 2010 there are some titles being planned for 3D release, they will be the beta kind of releases. Also the studios will take time to adopt. Why? The need to ensure that this investment is something that will be around for at least 5yrs, else the ROI is not there. See how long it took for BD to at least reach where it has today...However, I think 3D excites a lot of people, so the hype is there. We will see. 2011 is the real test.

Panny only has 1 display that will support 3D in 2010, Sammy more. The rest of the manufacturers are embracing it, but have not really announced the displays that will support it en mass.

I am waiting for the projector guys to make the 2010 announcements. I also expect more changes to the HDMI specs before the 3D matures.

2010 will be quite an interesting year as I think most of these giants will try to dish out their 3D panels. Hopefully, those big studios will embrace it as well. I shall adopt 'wait and see' stance for now. I am keen on 3D FHD pj.

it's coming the specs are just finalized, you don't need to wait 2-3years to mature... it's just an extension of AVC codec.. and the rest is add-on hardware like apeture glasses amd HDMI 1.4...

as for the reference of BD, well I bought I started buying 2008, it didn't take long to go from HDMI 1.0 to HDMI 1.3.. or BD x1 to BD x8.. or BD profile 1.0 to BD profile 2.0..

another thing to ponder is will your whole HDMI supply chain (amp/BDplayer/what not) be compromised and stuck at 1.3 profile for the next 5years, if have to use the TV for 5 years due to ROI again due to high investment cost?

I'm not sure if everything drops to the lowest version for HDMI? anyone can confirm?

I guess u're right.

Maybe ur strategy of AV upgrade is the correct one.

Too late for me to turn back. No upgrade at least for the next 5yrs for me, so I'll just have to be happy with what I have and gloat at people like u for always getting the latest stuff!

I think yours abit different, you choose 60incher.. (if not mistaken panny still sell older 60incher series even if the newer ones like 42-50 are being replaced right?) so maybe 2years time your Kuro 60 still considered (mid high end) among 60inch sold in local market.. (but maybe prices for these bigger sizes will tumble more, am not sure??)

however, 50" is more common... so maybe the 500A will be obsolete sooner.. anyway my remarks was more "optimized" for 42- 50inch TV.. cos the models change much faster and every change brings more features and cheaper price.. (with respect to how 42inch top range 10k model 3years ago is probably beaten by a 5-6k TV now)

(besides you won't be gloating at me getting a newer 60incher than yours.. biggrin.gif I'm sure it's still pricey, relative to 42-50inchers, even in 2years later.. )

again poor fellas like me cannot venture out of the cost effective mass market product range.. biggrin.gif

(with respect to how 42inch top range 10k model 3years ago is probably beaten by a 5-6k TV now)
(besides you won't be gloating at me getting a newer 60incher than yours..  biggrin.gif  I'm sure it's still pricey, relative to 42-50inchers, even in 2years later.. )

again poor fellas like me cannot venture out of the cost effective mass market product range..  biggrin.gif

Too late for me to turn back. No upgrade at least for the next 5yrs for me, so I'll just have to be happy with what I have and gloat at people like u for always getting the latest stuff!

Maybe need to be specific. Let me try to rephrase it : 'No display panel upgrade at least for the next 5yrs' whistling.gif

I am eager to see what will the pricing strategy be when 3D FHD Tvs hit the market.

Hey, Vizio announced a 70in LED backlit LCD for the amazing prize of USD3k+. I'm not sure how Vizio are doing it, panels that huge for a LCD are not cheap, yet they are planning on a release.

True, no planned display panel upgrade....music / sub highly possible.

2010 3D FHD panels are still far and few between. Samsung only the highest end has 3D FHD, Panasonic only the highest end as 3D FHD, 2011 will see many and cheaper.

US company...cost effective solutions, panels from Taiwan.

Their products were never the best in terms of final PQ, but the sheer size and price, was the factor.

Last year they had a 55" LED backlit and was very low priced.

But for Joe Public, imagine 72in TV with decent PQ, for pretty cheap prices.
