Meh, I just don't get the point of playing a mod which limits gameplay to the point of taking away the fun and diverseness of the game. It's like playing Counter Strike, no perks, similar weapons, dumbed down graphics.
But let's not stray from the topic. Hmm goodluck to all participants |

That's a question I've asked myself a lot at the time of the mod's conception. Obviously CoD4 and MW2 are extremely colorful stock games. No one is denying that. However there are two factors in play here:
A: Competitive Balance 1) Some things are completely broken, i.e. P90 and tubes. 2) Some things add a degree of randomness that the (majority of the) competitive community didn't want, i.e. gunsway/scope steady mechanics. B: Performance Due to the way the CoD4 engine works (Derivative of the Q3 engine) several physics calculations are dependant on the game's FPS due to severe rounding issues. Move speed, hard limit on silent movement, and especially jump height and falling damage are reliant on FPS, and have peak points at divisors of 1000 (i.e. 125, 250, 333) In fact, the game actually breaks down at 333 - you can jump literally 15-20% higher, take 3/4 falling damage, and move at non-sprint LMG speed without making any noise. The current competitive 'standard' for FPS is 250 (used to be 125). You want a PC that handles the game at 250 steady, and Promod helps a -lot- with that. Because of the above, a lot of things are turned off to ensure that the playing field is even for poorer PCs - decals, environmental effects, muzzle flash/smoke, dynamic entities (i.e. physics-interactive barrels/bricks/etc) are just a couple of unfortunate casualties. The mod didn't just suddenly come out of the blue. It was a refinement of the competitive communities' (in EU) desire into turning the game into something suitable for the highest levels of play, over the course of literally a year (Took them about that long to figure out non-cookable nades improved gameflow) And despite some of the changes being a little CS-like, it's still nothing like CS, or you'd bet your ass there'd be way more CS players playing both games. I talked a little about some (not nearly all) of the differences here. I do agree Promod did and does look like ass compared to stock. However, them's the breaks. You either hit 250fps, or you're at a severe disadvantage. Nothing prevents demo playback/frag movies from turning everything back on, though. And that being said, stock CoD4/MW2 (extremely shitty netcode aside) have been some of the best game-hours I've spent on pub play ever. This post has been edited by Falk: Jan 24 2010, 10:08 AM |

Good say by the great falk
Exactly like how he says at the last line, no one says you can't play stock or any other mod besides promod. Just don't take it to the competitive level, any mod played casually is all good fun and no one's gonna hate you for playing it But don't go offending others when they're not using your "fun" mod as a competitive mod, our community did went through quite abit of a "journey" in case if you didn't know! |

@Bliss: Dear god I honestly, honestly don't need you replying to every single one of my posts within 24 hours. My yes-man spot can only be filled by one person and that's my d*** (It talks as well if you haven't noticed). You've done it -three- times in this past week on the forums and it makes you look like a moron, it makes -me- look like a moron and I don't appreciate it at all.
@Luftwacko: In your definition, yes, it's unbalanced. Or maybe a better word is over-stripped. I do agree and I miss my Skorpion of all things, haha. The modders and competitive players, at the time, were thinking of the game more in terms of classes than gun diversity. As long as ONE SMG vs ONE rifle vs ONE sniper (and vs one shotty) supported by one sidearm was reasonably balanced vs each other, they were happy. There are many more factors than just sway/spread/damage/etc and I guess when you need something done ASAP and reliably for some upcoming 15k Euro prize money tourney taking place in 2 months (for example), thinking in terms of classes is way faster than thinking in terms of every individual gun. And that being said removing P90/auto snipers was a no-brainer. The reason the AK and 74u caught on early, and thus were used as the inter-class balance, was not because they were overpowered after removing sway. It basically had to do with the reload point in the animation both of which are the fastest of their class. The AK74u also happened to be retardedly imbalanced in stock/PAM4 sway or not (It'd be the only SMG you'd see after a while in Bloc for example just because it ripped walls open) which was toned down for Promod Live. That being said, I 100%, completely agree that the other guns are underutilized. your ideas have echoed mine and I've talked to people time and time again that guns in Promod need to at least be boosted so they have utility and are seen more than 2% of the time. M4 could have for example a very fast ADS speed, or the MP5 could have an initiation animation (when you swap to a gun) that's faster than the 74u, just for two examples that have nothing to do with bullet damage nor accuracy. Oh of course, all guns really should be standardized so you can fast-reload them at more or less the same amounts of time, or at least closer than 2-3x in difference. I don't know how much I should reveal that isn't already public but in the aftermath of the MW2 fiasco the community has been asking for new maps and interestingly enough several sporadic requests for new guns, so I guess the game is maybe at its point of lifespan where one gun per class just isn't diverse enough for the health of the competitive level. We'll see how things develop. edit: Dunno why you put those in spoilers btw. It's very, very rare to see honest, levelheaded discussion about gaming on lowyat and you raise many good points, even if they may not be for the first time.
