I managed to get return flight ticket at RM4,200 back in 2013 (normally RM4.5k at least) For flights to New york city, winter tickets is the cheapest because the chances of getting flight delayed is high. 
I had travelled east coast and west coast. Personally I prefer east coast because of the environment and the people and the facilities!! If i have a chance to visit USA, NYC will be my list haha.
