if one has australian residency rights, then one is considered a 'home' student.....

in which case, it is VERY VERY difficult to get admitted into med school.....half the med schools are now graduate entry.......and it is now very competitive to get into undergraduate entry med school........getting an ATAR>99 with high umat scores would be helpful, but still no guarantee.....

it is slightly easier to get in as an international student, but lately, it has become just as difficult as home student, due to limited places for foreign students and the popularity.......

it is premature to talk about this, as you have not even done a pre-u.......and general advice......for good med schools, they choose you, not the other way round.....ie, you go where you have offers....

being born in a country does not entitle you to pr.........

in fact, it may not give u right to citizenship either, as the laws have changed, and one of the new conditions is one of the parents must be either citizen or pr................

i would suggest not buying warm clothing in msia, when going over in summer........buy there, as when you need.......

it is often cheaper, and with wider choice, and in fashion, so you don't stick out like a sore thumb.........

warm clothing at msian shops are expensive......often in the few hundreds for simple padded wind cheaters.......

you can get similar ones for aud30 or so........

recently got good warm jackets in uk for 17 pounds (discounted 1/2 price).......

i think people should differentiate between fashion/brand name and warm appropriate (both cost and warmth) warm clothing.........

if one likes uniqlo (a japanese brand that appears to have a huge asian following, and even have a branch on oxford st in london), or whatever brand one likes, by all means, go buy them........

however, if one wants just reasonably priced appropriate warm clothing, then it is always better to buy them at the place you are staying, be they australia, uk, canada, or whatever........

oh, btw, many uniqlo products are also made in china......smile.gif

but you got it at a discount compare what you going to pay here.

not really.........

appropriate thick jackets are priced about rm150-200 in kl.......

they were priced gbp50 in oxford st.........

similar ones are priced about gbp30-50 at most high street stores (eg debenhams, bhs, m&s)......but on a sale (very common), they are half or even 70% off......so got a nice very warm jacket for gbp17 down from 40.........where can you buy any decent warm jacket for rm70 in msia???.........

btw, many 'british' brands like m&s, debenhams, clarks, are cheaper in uk than kl......... biggrin.gif

the answer is simple.........

the max one can get in a-levels was aaa.......

that translate into about atar 95 and above........

but you will really get NO offers with atar 95-98..........if we assume the distribution of students >95 is linear, 60% of aaa students should not have received offers as their atar is <98........but they may........

that's why a-levels is 'easier'........lots of 'weaker' students gets aaa (atar95 equivalent) and if they do well in the isat and interview may receive offers, over a stronger student with atar97 (still aaa equivalent) who was never in the short list and had no chance to shine at the interview......

this will change going forward, with the introduction of a* grade........there will be a revision of a-level cutoffs, and they may now want aa*a*, or even 3a*.........

it's already happening in uk.......imperial used to need aaa for their engineering courses........current offers is aa*a*............

IMO, he is a disgrace to all Malaysian. He is supposedly the cream of Malaysian society being well traveled, well educated, knowledgeable, ethical etc for being an "investment banker" so how can he plead ignorance? If this supposedly cream of Malaysian society can be so stupidly ignorance, what is he trying to imply? The rest of us are dirt? I wouldn't feel so hurt if he just declare himself as a office boy instead.

don't you think he was behaving exactly like how most msians behave when encountered by the police after a traffic offence.......i was almost waiting for him to offer 'incentive not to fine me'........ smile.gif luckily he is smart enough not to........if he did, he would face a JAIL sentence..........

he thinks oz is like msia...... tongue.gif

Flight on the 19th to melb getting jitters, have yet to get any winter clothing, going to uniqlo tomororw to check it out. *tips? ive got mix results from friends in the city, some say get treanch it rains alot/dont need anyting get in aus/get a jacket its going to be cold /leather jacket all you need!!/ jumper and your done...etc *

i repeat, it is summer now so you do NOT need warm clothing immediately.......buy there when you find a suitable one at leisure........

of course, if like some here, you like brands, just buy whatever strikes your fancy, price and suitability is not an issue when it comes to preferred brands.........

Hey guys,

I'm currently doing A-levels and wish to pursue a mechanical engineering degree in MelbourneUni in 2012. My question is:

Apparently MelbourneUni works differently from other universities in which students get a bachelor of XXXX major in XXXX. So let's say I want to get a simple degree like Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, I can't do that in MelbUni like I could in UK ..etc? How many years would it take if I were to do a Bachelor in Science majoring in Mechanical? In UK, a 4Year MEng would get me a Masters in Mechanical. How long would it take for me to complete the course in MelbUni to obtain an equivalent qualification?

Thanks
*
the new style melbourne model means engineering is a postgraduate degree.....so you do a 3 year bachelor's degree then 2 years masters of engineering...........total 5 years........

i would just go to any other go8 uni and get it done for 4 years..........

based on current temperatures, evenings and nights, if you go out, can be a bit chilly, in the high teens, for which a jumper/cardigan/hoodie which most people have is enough........you don't need winter clothing........

melbourne is well know for somewhat crazy weather, the classical 4 seasons in a day thing....

haha. just want to know. what if I bring in more than AUD10k? Singapore custom will ask questions or just let me through cuz I'm just transiting at Singapore?

also, will 1:30 hours be a rush or I could just do things at normal pace? XD
*
you should never have that much cash with you.......

you are on transit, so you are officially/legally NOT in spore, and will not ever face spore customs.........

barring flight delays, you have time to have a drink, check your email, surf internet a bit, then be at the holding gate 45 min before......they board 30 min before..........note the departure terminal, if different from arrival, take the internal (transit) aerotrain to the appropriate terminal..........

international students will always get in easier compared with locals, they want your money.........

it also depends on the course, b's and d's will not get you into critical courses, but will get you into everything else.....then again, having straight a's will get you considered, but not with a atar of 95.........

as for nus, places are severely limited, so entry cut offs are very high, much higher than oz unis........even melbourne........

I think what's talked about is, it is easier for International student to get into critical course with A Level than International student with Year 12 result. Someone posted before saying for medicine, the cut off point is TER99 and AAB for A Level.
*
i made the comments in another thread.......no you cannot get in with aab, but as long as you have aaa, you will be considered.......whereas you need to have atar 98 and good imed/isat to have any chance........

that is below minimum wage, but chinese restaurants are well known to pay below that.......but it is unrecorded, so you don't need to pay tax......smile.gif

you failed to understand.......

the tfn no is for deduction of your tax liability by your employer and remitted.......so you do not get the full amount, but your pay less the tax deducted.......

however in many chinese restaurants, they pay you less, but do not declare your income, and do not deduct tax from you.........

please note that there is a difference between what honours means in different places.....in uk, it is a measure of how well you did......

in oz, with 3 year programmes, it is an extra year of study, but you have to be INVITED to do the honours year, you cannot otherwise 'volunteer'.....(the honours in a 4 or more year programme however works the same way as in uk)......

in uk therefore, a good honours will get you some advantage in getting jobs.....

in oz, an honours attached to a 3 year degree qualification suggest one is on the way to postgraduate studies, and possibly academia......that is all....
