An updated "Best Antivirus" for 2010. Please use this as a reference when researching antivirus utilities. As time goes on, the poll can be updated to add further options.

Happy Voting.

For free Antivirus, go for Avira, for paid version, go for Kaspersky or Eset.

I am not professional security consultant but I believe there really is no one best antivirus system out there.

A failure to detect 1 malware on AV-1 but detected on AV-2 doesn't mean AV-2 is superior. AV-1 may be able to detect other malicious codes AV-2 fails to find.

Therefore, I think this poll is misleading and should be named 'Most Popular' and not 'Best'

It could be other av slow input the new virus definition database

or

users didt update their av frequently or commercial license has expired.

It could also be referred to the location/region origin of the malware?

nope..
I'm voting for the services that my anti virus provide to me..
not for the popularity..

I've been using many anti virus before from Norton, Avira, avg, bit defender, kaspersky & the others.
& for the result, I'm hang in to kaspersky.

I'm voting for Microsoft Security Essentials. It has the least false positives, polished and good detection rate. I hate AV that gives a lot of false positives, resource hog and buggy. I'm also sure Norton has a lot of improvements.

--for me who just use P4 for vista OS tongue.gif

but on my netbook, i use McAfee (ori one)..since that one is the manufactured recommended..keep the computer fast thought...

not at all.
its all depends on you, the user/community.
if you suspect your av not detecting certain virus..then report it!
av will able to detect all malware if user is responsible.most of detection is started with users reporting on first place.after then there come honeypot,hips,heuristics,..etc..

I have an IRC Flood trojan. Ive tried cleaning it using AVG and Windows Defender but still couldnt. What do you recommend i do? Ive even tried to clean it using Yahoo Anti Spy but it says 'administrative rights required to quaranteen'. Dunno what that means.

Please advise.

This is very true. The best for you doesn't mean the best for me. The best detection rate? The best malware coverage? The best function coverage? The best in terms of consuming the least memory resource? "The best" it self is a myth, better further define it...Otherwise it can be just the misleading thread, mislead people to buy the one with highest vote...

Kaspersky does a great job in promoting thier antivirus. hmm.gif
Most people do not know G data.
G data has 2 different antivirus engines(AVAST + BitDefender).

Better see this testing report before buying any antivirus. wink.gif
Remember to see the false positive as well, as most antivirus thought some non-virus files as a virus.

Currently using Avira Personal 10 with Malwarebytes(free) as backup. No antivirus is perfect, just make sure you surf the Internet properly and do not go clicking on any banners that say "Click me and win a free IPhone!" and so on and you'll be fine. I see many people overkilling their PC with Internet Security Suites, Hips protection, and such. I think that is just... well.. as I said... overkill... If you're using firefox, install adblock + noscript. These 2 can be found on the customize firefox website. =) There, you get the best of both words. Clickjack + script protection on your browser, an Antivirus solution, Backup Antimalware solution, and your sense of safety for free, and for less resources than running a full blown IS.

An updated "Best Antivirus" for 2010. Please use this as a reference when researching antivirus utilities. As time goes on, the poll can be updated to add further options.

Happy Voting.

I disagree with this... Avira does more better in promoting on their product.

LOL!!!! Whats Jackie Chan?? Who's Lee Chong Wei icon_rolleyes.gif

Well G data & Kaspersky is in same level on latest Av-comparatives.  smile.gif
I disagree...
The Av famous is because the av got awards, comparative tests, success stories & certificates
*
The 1st time i feel myself totally agree with you sweet2020. Forget all the bullsh*t behind.
The Av is famous because the av got awards, comparative tests, success stories & certificates

AND the MAIN POINT........ G data & Kaspersky are far from each other!!!!!!!!! are u fxxking blind???
Check av-comparatives again and you can see how bad Kaspersky detection rate is!!!!!
i wonder what kinda eyes you have notworthy.gif

I always tell my friend if they really want to make some1 angry. Just use the avira or the avast! to scan their "software inventory". Gurantee they will vmad.gif .coz at least 50% of their software "medicine" will be "relocated".

The kis 2011 is getting heavier. blush.gif

The Avira, the last time i used it in late 2008 confirms it. I have been using the paid version of anti virus since 2009. So, my comments might be outdated.

As for the Avast!, my Russian friend have to reduce his software inventory by 90% because his GF accidentally use avast to scan his software inventory. 80GB of software left 8GB like that for me to copy.

I also did not like Avast! because i used certain software in different 5 anti virus software like norton, kaspersky, bitdefender, trend micro and McAfee and nothing happened. But once i use it in the Avast! protected OS, they said there is a trojan. doh.gif

I actually use a variety of anti virus now.

Trend Micro is one of them.

But, i can tell you that "there is something better to invest"

KIS, i just use it till it expire. I do not have much time to slowly experiment the "combinations" of the malware fighters.

In term of the virus database, yes bitdefender is number 1.

Regarding other component's performance such as online protection, i am not very sure about it.

But the latest KIS also makes my laptop slow down and heat it up.

Dude, that is not a legitimate anti virus.

Read this article:

Remove it with the revo uninstaller ASAP and scan your pc with other free antivirus software.

Dont know bout you guys. But for me free solution is as good as or most of the time better than paid solution. Here is a nice free combo:

Package 1:

AV : Comodo
Firewall: Comodo
Browser add on : Firefox WOT and AVG linkscanner +Firefox built in protection or IE safesearch.
On Demand : Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro

Package 2:

AV : Avira
AV (0 hour protection) :threatfire
Firewall :Windows Firewall (For Windows Vista and Above, XP firewall sucks).
Browser add on :Firefox WOT and AVG linkscanner +Firefox built in protection or IE safesearch.

well, just get ready to answer lots of popups when you're installing/uninstalling/running applications tho...although you can set to "remember" the settings afterward

I see.

I am not sure with the current version. But the previous version i am using requires users to set modes for the level of notification.

Also, there is 1 mode known as installation mode which reduces the notification during the installation or the removal of the program files.

Nope didnt slow down mah PC at all (memory usage is about 5 MB and below), and No it doesnt come up with lotsa popup, Threatfire is designed to complement your AV, meaning if your AV warn about certain infection, threatfire wont warn that. It will only warn what your AV missed.

Yup Comodo is more for technically sound person. A non techie will answer Yes to everything and boom.. he got infected. I like Comodo because its the strongest in term of HIPS protection and one that pass lots of test in matousec test : http://www.matousec.com/

Nope didnt slow down mah PC at all (memory usage is about 5 MB and below), and No it doesnt come up with lotsa popup, Threatfire is designed to complement your AV, meaning if your AV warn about certain infection, threatfire wont warn that. It will only warn what your AV missed.

*
The threatfire you use is anti virus or the firewall only?

KAV 2011 you use it for how long?

I am using the KIS 2011. Sometime it tend to have random surge on CPU usage, but the frequency decline when i upgraded to the latest version.

The latest build work fine for me.

It better than Nod 32 and Norton.

I install the both av on win 98/2000... it keep blue screen and cant boot into normal mode.

I have to do system restore.

I have try install KIS 2011 and Avast event not compatible on win 98/2000.. it works better compare to those above product.

Paid go for KIS 2011..Free go for Avast + Malwarbyte.. (is better compare to Nod 32 & norton)

it is better to straight off to become blue screen once it is installed rather than live on with the incompatible with the OS.

only God knows when it would suddenly become blue screen or have other problems when the user already rely on the system.
