QUOTE(kaspersky-fan @ Jan 2 2010, 12:31 AM) I'm just wondering, why ASTRO's new decoder didnt have a setting to output default resolutions as it is broadcasted? For example if the channel is 576i, then just output that, etc... instead of forcing us to choose 720p or 1080i... I understand this option allows hd ready tv to be viewed, but if only they could include another option with "Broadcasted resolution". Broadcast resolution? I like this thing. But not so sure whether other tv broadcaster such as SKY TV also implement this setting. This post has been edited by minimize: Jan 2 2010, 11:43 AM |

QUOTE(RAMChYLD @ Jan 2 2010, 12:43 PM) Astro transmit 1080p? I thought they only transmit 1080i? Most HDTV production is 1080p, it's just transmission that is 1080i as it uses less bandwidth. In any case tho, the idea is for support for cheaper HDMI video capture cards. RM1200 is a lot, and sumore no guaranteed support for usage in WinMCE. Otoh, Avermedia's card got support guaranteed, but won't receive 50Hz input (I had a long talk with their support staff). And there's no equivalent in Asian region. Only US have AVerMedia HDMI video capture cards. Edit: turns out that the Auzentech's HDMI cannot be used for capture at all... |

QUOTE(AstInst @ Jan 2 2010, 08:13 PM) Having used Sky, DirectTV, FoxTel and many other decoders, NONE of them switch the output to the TV. In ALL cases the decoder is set to one resolution and the chips in the box do the conversion. It is means astro also can be infected with this delay problem if a lot of people surf the channel? One of the biggest criticisms of Digital TV in the early days was channel surf times, the delay between switching channels. If the TV switched modes then this would be worse! Hence the fixed mode output. Typically, channel surf times become less of an issue as people start using the EPG to find programs, rather than channel surf. Now that Astro B.yond has a decent EPG we should stop being a nation of surfers and become searchers! Until now I dont have any problem when surfing channel. |

QUOTE(kaspersky-fan @ Jan 3 2010, 10:24 AM) oops, right...almost forgot the hd channels were mixed in the same transponders as sd... but i beg to differ with the bandwidth thing, if no one complains im very sure they will maintain it for the time being and slowly decrease the bitrate as more channels are added in...just like what happened to those sd channels. lets just enjoy the good quality while it lasts... Hopefully when we all start paying they should give us optimum bandwidth for HD channel. Right now because they dont charge anything so it still acceptable.Good quality 720p HD takes at least 10-12Mbps with MPEG-4, and I think 15Mbps is a more reasonable minimum even 28Mbps isn't enough to eliminate all artifacts (based on D-Theater tape bitrates and quality). At 8Mbps, it becomes noticably lower quality. |

One more problem is astro broadcast both SD and HD channel on same transponder.
Astro currently put 2 HD + 10 SD channel on one transponder and I absofcukinglutely they broadcast very low quality HD. This post has been edited by minimize: Jan 6 2010, 10:16 PM |

QUOTE(AstInst @ Jan 6 2010, 10:27 PM) I have pointed my PC based analyser at Astros HD broadcast they are on an entirely different satellite to the SD. All the SD broadcasts are on Measat 3 and the HD broadcasts are on Measat 3a. I get the info from lyngsat.com. If their info is not correct than it my mistake. If Astro were indeed broadcasting HD on the same transponder as SD then they would not have any problem with shared feed systems, this would be the easy option for them, but they have not taken it (surprisingly). Astros HD picture quality is far better than many HD broadcasts I have seen around the world (especially the USA), it looks like they are using new HD encoders and not just cheap upgrades of their existing system. The BBC in the UK are broadcasting their HD at the same bitrate as Astro having recently moved to new HD encoders. For results of their independent tests see http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/news...re-quality.html. Do you really think that Astro is low quality HD, have you actually seen it? Your statement would make it seem as if you have not! Because from what I know, astro have to stick 5 HD channel per transponder for optimum HD quality. From the image below HBO HD, NAT GEO HD and rest 10 SD channel broadcast on same transponder. ![]() |
