Nimoy Reprising Spock in Star Trek Online

Atari, Inc. and MMO developer Cryptic Studios announced today that Leonard Nimoy, the actor who originated the legendary and beloved "Star Trek" character of Spock more than 40 years ago, has joined the cast of "Star Trek Online," the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) ever set in the "Star Trek" universe.

Nimoy, who recently reprised his role as Spock in 2009's Star Trek movie, will voice the introduction for "Star Trek Online." Nimoy's voice, known to millions of fans all over the world, will also be heard during key scenes and events in-game.

"I am happy to be involved with 'Star Trek Online.' In this game, the essence of 'Star Trek' – exploration and adventure – lives long and prospers," said Nimoy. "I'm pleased that a whole new generation of fans will be able to discover new frontiers in the 'Star Trek' universe."

"Mr. Nimoy's participation in 'Star Trek Online' brings the game to a whole new level," said Jim Wilson, President and CEO of Atari, Inc. "When 'Star Trek' fans hear his voice they will know that 'Star Trek Online' truly is part of the 'Star Trek' universe."

Set in the year 2409, "Star Trek Online" boasts extraordinary features and lets fans both new and old experience unparalleled adventures. Offering space and ground game play, players will have the opportunity to become a high-ranking Starfleet officer and will participate in missions that will take them into the depths of space, across exotic planets, and even inside other starships. "Star Trek Online" offers total customization where every ship player's command can be customized, from color to construction. Additionally, anyone can create their own species in "Star Trek Online," as well as customize the look of their avatar's uniform.

For more information on the game, visit the official site: http://www.startrekonline.com/
and for a preview, go here: http://www.gamerevolution.com/preview/pc/star-trek-online

The game will be available starting February 2.

@ frega: they say they going to call me when available.

@mrhulk: fed have more pve and story line. klingon more pvp incline. you need to choose a faction between them and pvp each other. you cannot go fed zone and pvp. but you can pvp fed in neutral zone. no info about pvp death penalty yet. looks like theme park.

new mmo feature: in solo pve instance you can pause anytime(u need to control 5 char). grouping instance 45 sec cooldown.

How does D2D download work? I'm unfamiliar.

Say if youre downloading and get dc'd, will it just resume? I'm looking at this Download Manager 2.0...seems like a browser download manager. Compared that to Steam's...

D2D is just like Steam. Its tied to your GameSpyID. You can resume downloads or re-download at any time.

LoL I felt the same way when I checked out Amazon. The links that I gave are digital downloads, so no shipping costs will be involved in the transaction. D2D recently made their STO available for worldwide purchase as well.

You should also note, different retailers provide different pre-order bonuses. So it'd probably be a good idea to check them out before purchasing from either D2D or gamestop.

It sucks that Amazon doesn't have the DDE version or any digital means for obtaining STO, their pre-order bonus is IMO the best bonus.

@Morpheus2be, do you happen to know any particulars about the D2D bonus? The "Multi-Spatial Personal Sheild"? I prefer D2D for their reliability but I prefer the TOS Constitution Class ship bonus. Decisions, decisions.

P.S. Even if you're not too sure on the details of the item, I'd value any views you may have on the topic.

Well, not really. It's an exclusive item and is quite good. We have the stats from the Steam version.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/9900

Chronodynamic Armor
6.1% Physical Resistance
6.1% Kinetic Resistance
2.6% Energy Resistance
+15% Critical Damage (seems quite good)
+5% Critical Chance
+3% Energy Damage

We don't know itemization yet so we cant tell if its good till late game. So unless you get a BETTER armor from late game with better stats than that, you're gonna be using it.

The best is Joined Trill (DDE) with exclusive race traits and Borg Bridge Officer (Amazon). Those 2 will be good forever, till endgame. Connie might be a Tier 0 ship (starter ship). I'll be piloting a Miranda, you'll be on a Connie till we get to Tier 1 ships.

I don't really give a crap about Trill since I wanna make a Betazoid(with telekinesis). But I do want the Borg Officer. Huge voyager fan. Damn Amazon for not having digital download version. DAMN THEM TO HECK.

The interesting thing about joined Trill is the multiple lifespan experience bonus. Wonder how that turns out. Borg bridge officer could be interesting too.

I chose D2D simply because it was 1st to allow international download purchase. My usual haunt is TSB, but when I asked them, they said distributor hasn't indicated whether STO will be available in SEA region.

TSB?

I usually get games (both wow expansions) from pcgame.com.my. They delivered both on time (the day before official release). But they didnt even have STO listed and Champions Online is outta stock. No luck there!

LoL, coming back to the topic at hand, I saw the Chronodynamic Armor on Steam as well. Do think that's a better bonus than the one from D2D? It's apparantly a constantly regenerating personal shield which also heals you.

With regards to race, I'll probably make a unique race, or just go human for their unique racial trait (I believe it's Leadership, a passive +5% damage? to the crew). Hmm, about your decision to make a Betazoid with telekinesis, is that a concept? or for the ability? TK doesnt seem to do much, 7ft knockback on a 1 min cooldown.

BTW, here's a link the list of traits you can choose, it however does not list unique racial traits (such as my example earlier, Human Leadership)

Uh, *looks for post on traits* yep it's still there... Just above your post RoloTomasi... What are you? Blind?! mad.gif You're relieved from duty crewman. Report to Sickbay at once!

I joke of course lol tongue.gif

The link in my earlier post directs you to a list which all the generic racial traits. And btw, were you asking for me or frega blink.gif

And to be fair the game isn't out yet, so its really hard to say what's the best race/class combination at this point in time. Even with that list I provided, most of its mechanics are still untested (or if they are tested they have not yet been discussed in any public forums), so until we see how it applies to the game we won't know for sure.

Here's a video for the character creator, hopefully it'll help some of you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIRGoVMARTc

And here's a list from that video (courtesy of OwnNav from JupiterColony, http://www.jupitercolony.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2796), so you don't have to keep clicking pause.

/Begin Quote

Classes
Engineering - Survivability, support generators, and controlling the paths of enemy advance with fieldworks. The Engineering Officer can withstand the most damage by improving the performance of their own personal shields, while supporting his away team with power generators or by bottlenecking the enemy's advance with defensive minefields. The Engineer's own combat effectiveness is improved by modifications to their firearms or support fire from fabricated turrets and drones.

Science - Weakening or incapacitating the enemy over time, erecting energy fields that damage or hinder, and healing their away team from such effects. The Science Officer has the greatest potential to quickly react to a chaotic combat situation through direct enemy holds, weakening an enemy group's combat strength or resistance, or responding to enemy attacks by quickly healing damage. The Science Officer's combat effectiveness is their versatility.

Tactical - Combat damage, stealth recon, and squad tactics. The Tactical Officer can deliver damage in the widest variety of methods, while supporting his away team by drawing off enemy threat or bolstering their combat effectiveness with tactics and squad commands.

Races Available
Human - Leadership 10% Crew Powers, Teamwork 5% Team Bonus to Exploit Damage
Andorian - Acute Senses 20% StealthSight
Bajoran - Creative 5% Damage and Healing with Kits, 10% Heals Received, 10% Regeneration
Bolian - Corrosive blood 20% Resistance to Toxic Damage, Deals Toxic Damage when Bitten
Vulcan - Logical 30% Resistance to Psionic Damage, Confuse, and Clacate Physical strength 10% melee physical damage
Ferengi - Acute senses 20% StealthSight, Natural Immunities 33% Radiation Damage resist, 33% Toxic Damage resist
Unknown - 4 Traits from the pool.

Also you get a total of 4 traits it looks like. So Humans will get to select two from the pool below, Andorians three, etc.

Trait Pool
Acute Senses 20% StealthSight
Accurate 0.1 Accuracy
Aggressive 2 Sec *+5% All Damage Bonus Strength, +5% Threat Generation

Telepathic 20% StealthSight, .75% chance to Expose, +.5 sec Expose duration
Warp Theorist 10 Starship Warp Core Training

*Only affects certain things

I may have missed some of the *, if I did let me know and I'll correct. Also I noticed three types of traits: Innate, Enhancement, and Passive. I'm not sure what the difference between the three is. I thought Passive meant all the time non activated trait, but some of the passives listed have times associated with them :? At least we can pick what traits we want though! Cheers

/End Quote

Yep that's one of the most comprehensive lists out there. To those of you who are going to play, please leave your Cryptic @handle name, so we can meet up biggrin.gif. Also feel free to list your race/career/ship choices. Lets keep the discussion alive people smile.gif

Hate to break it to you, but you can't play a Klingon... they're not part of the Federation... I suppose you could custom build a Klingon though.

Ah and a slight elaboration to that - Federation Klingon peace treaty ended, thus igniting a war - so it is in these desperate times that we join the Federation - Klingons are available for play but they're very pvp-centric (they only lvl from PvP) and I do think you need to play Starfleet for a while before unlocking Klingon content.

i think klingon faction is available at start.

http://www.startrekonline.com/node/784

http://www.startrekonline.com/node/792

they just lack pve content. need to choose one of klingon house and pvp each other. in fed space only consent pvp. open pvp in neutral area.

i want bird of prey. can cloak in combat. and klingon ship can fit more tactical officer than fed ship.

p/s ah yes need to unlock it. for around five hrs of fed gameplay. and begin at same rank of fed char that unlock the content.

Haha, Klingon's are more warlike compared to the Federation. I do however think that The U.S.S. Prometheus would at least be at par if not more powerful than any Klingon Vessel.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand your question. How do you mean "like an old Interplay Star Trek game"?

Lets see, STO is first and foremost online tongue.gif (duh), so you'll get to create your own character/ avatar, you'll also get to customize your own ships. Its combat interface will be approximately 50/50 space combat and ground combat (away missions). Space combat will lean more to a tactical combat scenario where you'll have to weaken the enemy's ship with phasers and destroy the hull with photon torpedoes. Ground combat is more fast paced, comparing it to WoW would be a crude comparison, it takes up its combat engine from Champions, so its quite fast paced, not much downtime. There will also be chances in the game to partake in non combat situations, such as a research mission to save a planet from a disease (if I'm not mistaken).

Did that in anyway answer your question?

For the ability of cos. I think the knockback will be good since I'll be Science/Science. Not sure I'll be pewpewing much as science. So its good for maybe when an ******* keep focusing me, a defensive move.

Open Beta starts on the 12th of January (Western Date). Its not a free for all entrance though, you either need to pre-order or get it by winning contests etc.

Spent a good 3 hours in game yesterday. I rushed through character creation coz its beta and its gonna get wiped later anyways.

The 1st 10mins looked ugly (the game engine gfx) until I realized, eh hang-on, I haven't tweaked the settings yet. >< I did that and voila, it looks gorgeous (to my low standards anyway).

The first few missions are fun and varied enough but I suspect its gonna get repetitive soon looking at all the forum complaints. Still, I enjoyed most of it, partly because its just a refreshing game environment. Can't wait to get some more game time tonight so I can unlock the Klingon PvP game play.

I'm in OB right now, not much latency issues... or if I do have them, they're not really noticeable.

There are some disconnects, but that appears to happen to everyone from the stress test. They are working at stabilizing the server, there's a patch today to address this issue.

Edit: Feel free to ask me any questions you may have on the game, I'll answer what I can.

there are better download sources from bigdownloads and games.on.net

1 file only and use a download manager than can resume if it breaks. mine done after 2+ days (about 52hours) on 512k.

each retailer got exclusive ingame item. however if you read the thread they suggest D2D coz other retailer will charge you delivery charges.

about open beta.

i get frequent sever busy. is that means server full atm?

last time ingame i try to buy another bo. got one from initial quest. once i purchase, it does nothing. there's no new bo in my bo tab. only deduct the point. do i have to beam back to my ship and configure it?

Played the game till Lt Cmdr 1 (11). HUGE HUGE disappointment.

Pro
- highly customizable character progression

Conssssss
- Repetitive. Shallow. Same missions for all 50 levels, over and over. Its a single player game, and all you do is shoot things. I couldnt sit thru it anymore after I got my tier2 ship.

- Cryptic = greedy company. Multiple bonus stacking pre-orders / dde / lifetime = nomnomnom money. Expect micro-transactions to be a norm. like respecs (USD12.50 for CO, expecting similar for STO), which nullifies the ONLY one pro this game has.

- No immersion. Very unstarfleet to shoot things over and over, even if its war.

- Unfinished. Unpolished.

- Bad game mechanics /concepts / design overall. From warping, to use of the bridge to science ships actually being science ships, mission design etc etc etc. You know the drill.

beta over. so who is going to pay?

only plus for me is a simple game. as long as lot of ppl playing it still going to be fun.

they only have 1 server to maintain and have enough fanbase. the game should be good for 1 year.

i'll wait until june and see how the community turn out. march earliest after few patch.

unless another good mmo coming out besides sw:tor

Wonder if any EVE players will transition to STO. EVE has a pretty decent following here and from what I gather some of them started EVE cause are trekkies. I didn't get to play the beta as by the time I got my key, and downloaded the client, beta was over tongue.gif. Now wondering if i should even bother.

Cryptic games = By level 16 you have accessed 95% of the content. It just ends up being recycled over and over again. They don't actually add meaningful content to any of their games + server problems + patching problems.

only game i can suggest is DarkFall in the current state of game. However its not for everyone . the good thing is that Malaysians now can play this game with the new support by Lagless.com.

@sayming: Star Trek is kinda a stigma here; a lot of people don't want to associate themselves with it for fear of being called a nerd or anything similar, and because of that, this game doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Having said that, flying around in starships and firing beam weapons and torpedoes are fun! biggrin.gif

I finally got promoted to captain. Man, the ships are very robust!

i'm sux at this game. canceled my sub.

any1 can give me pointers where to go at lvl9?

i have tons of anomaly. finish the quest send item to memory alpha but ppl still won't talk to me coz i do not help the b**** enough. what else to do to help the commander? she doesn't give anymore quest.

any1 play klingon? ground pve i can grind? i waste sooo much time make large bo boobs but i can't beam them down???!!!!!

how the fuct to use baleth thing in pvp? i got killed in 3 shot from far2 away. or am i suppose to switch to that weapon during close combat? i want to make close combat fighter.

Aww.

for the anomaly, you need to go to memory alpha, talk to the commander, then deposit it at the console JUST behind her - the one flashing.

for more quests - call back commander sulu - there should be some more quests for you to go before you reach lt commander.

for close combat - you need damn good shields first. Of course if you go close ehough, then you can use the bathleth to by pass the enemy shield seeing it passes through unlike beam weapons.
Use the x button to change weapons in middle of combat. then spam 1-2-1-2-2-1 or something liek that. its like a punch-kick combo already.

I'm RA5, but I kinda took a break from the game. Had a few friends want to try Champions till more Task Forces were added to the game.

I'll prolly head back by next month. I'll see you guys then if you're still playing.

This game is unplayable without VPN service because the ping is unstable, so you have to pay more to play this game smoothly. Even i use WTFast, i only got 300-500ms ping, but it is playable and my ground battle with 4 other AI-teamates is smooth.

i read some mission description in http://www.stofoundry.com/ , i shocking.gif . The fan made mission stories are very cool and so nostalgic for Trekkies.

After playing for a month on F2P , Here are my impressions:

Levelling
The journey from Level 1 to 50 is fast. Very fast. You have the Episodes, which give between 75% to 100% of the XP needed to level up. Just by playing through the storyline you can level to max. There are repeatable missions, such as the Borg Invasion in Ker'rat (Eta Eridani System) which gives 50% of a level in under 20 minutes, as well as 1440 Dilithium. Furthermore, you have Patrol Missions scattered around the maps which scale with level. I levelled from 40-50 solely by doing Exploration Missions! I only played 1-2 hours daily, except on weekends where I spent 4-6 hours.

Pay to Win?
You get a free ship every 10 levels, except 50. At Level 40 the ship token gives you a Tier 5 Ship which is the highest ship rank. So, no, you don't need to spend a single cent to get to the top. Everything can be purchased in-game, unless you are after unique ship configurations or costumes. The only real reason to buy C-Points is if you want to buy multiple ships at max level, simply by trading 500 C-Points for 100k Dilithium through the in-game exchange. 500 C-Points will cost you USD6.25 or around RM19.

End Game
What to do at max level? There are Raids, both Space and Ground, from which you can get tokens to be exchanged for gear. There is also Organised PVP. I think this is where the F2P lacks, because User created Missions (Foundry) are only available for paying players, Free players have to be content with meagre offerings.

I think it is a good game, it certainly isn't EVE, but the space combat is much better. Ground combat is rather boring, and the lack of end game content hurt this game, but if you are looking for a free spaceship simulator set in a well known IP universe, this might just be the game for you!

Caveat - STO stupid updates are usually around Friday 10pm-1am(Malaysian time) , which is a real bummer.

I'm very much active in the game. Play almost everyday. Looking for other Malaysian players. Add me in game @dewinuwa.

Also, I made a steam community Star Trek Online Malaysia STO-MY. Pls join if interested.

I have FED & KDF character. This game pretty much is free. You only need to spend cash if only if you are impatient, or like a beautiful cosmetic items. Pretty much, all the powerful items come from quest.

I can guide, help and sponsor some items if needed. Add me in game @dewinuwa.

See you in game!
