Hi everyone, I'm trying to venture into pet business but with 0 experiance.

If I have 2 option, selling pet supplies and the other one, selling pet supplies for others where my employer, in the future, might be my supplier (currently he's the only one who has direct channel to the manufacturer).

Which one should i choose? I'm currently a student. I am also a small scale pet breader.

What's the difference between the 2 options?
*
The first option: I work for my own.
2nd option: I work for others (X pet shop).

However, if i go for the first option, I'll be getting my supplies from X pet shop. There won't be any difference right?

Based on your experiance, will the owner sell me the pet supplies if they know that I'm trying to do my own business?

The 2nd option sounds like you're gonna be an employee in someone's pet store. I still don't really get your 1st option, it's kinda vague to me.

Are you planning to open your own store? If you do, what kinda pet store? There are several types;

1) Pet services - grooming, boarding, training
2) Retailing - sale of cage, foods, supplies, clothes, toys etc
3) Live stocks – sale of the pets themselves

Also, since you're a student, have you ever consider the amount of capital needed to start-up & where to source for capital for whatever you plan to do?

Yes, I want to start my own pet store. I'll draft out my business plan after my finals. smile.gif

Based on my knowledge, it's better to get your supplies from a distributor instead of another pet store. Profit margins, are you planning to jeopardize yours? I doubt any pet store will be reluctant to sell their products to you at their usual price, especially when you're gonna sell them at a higher price in your own store. This is because you already lost the price competition.

Well, I've contacted the manufacturer and they directed me to this pet store. I think that they might be the sole pet store that have this brand cause most pet store in KL does not have. Therefore, the target market between me and his will be different. I'll be selling online and to other pet store by hiring an agent.

Lets say, if I am to repacket the original product into smaller amount. Is it legal to do so as I've come across quite a number of people who are doing so.

For example: I have 10 kg rice and I repacket it into 10 units of 1 kg rice. Is this legal?

Which Acts should I check this in? Sales of Good Acts?

Mini markets does that all the time. I don't think it's illegal. Only thing illegal is sellling government controlled items at a higher price, like rice, oil, sugar etc. Sometimes mini markets buys in bulk and repackage them into smaller packets to maximise profits. Even inkjet photo papers are also sub divided to be sold. I don't see any problems to it. smile.gif

Wanting to repack & sell Heggie foods?  laugh.gif

I did that before for important dried fruits e.g. cranberries, apricots, kiwi etc. Bought in cartons of 10kgs from the importer & repacked it into fancy packaging like Famous Amos for resale during festive seasons.

Couldn't find anything wrong with it cause to me, that's how the supply chain from wholeseller to consumer works. The middle person will repack the wholesellers goods into smaller packs for consumers.

Think food recontamination and poisoning due to lack of quality control of the supplier, check ministry of health approval before assuming, there should be certain sense of responsibility when it comes to business instead merely driven by profit.

I have learn a tricks and two on business from non educated people, which I bet not even MBA will teach. One is what most chinese businessman would do, is to go for lunch or dinner. The main reason beside build rapport, but also like dip your toe into water to see the water`s temperature. During the meal, a typical chit chat will little by little reveal the person`s personality, how he deal with problems, his lifestyle(alcoholic, gambler etc) then you can judge your deal/any business conditions with him.

Any idea what and how they would normally ask? If the other party knows about your intention and they intend to cheat, it doesn't make any difference right?

Actually, I'm curious why you don't want to sell it to them.

I'm actually wondering whether will the s.distributor supply to me.. hehe..

If he doesn't then i'll guess i have to wait for the implementation of the competition act then...

Well this is the case, he sells directly to the end consumer. However, if you are the sole distributor, you will supply to me if i'm not affecting the sales to your target market right?

Do you mean a supplier who stops supplying goods?
If it is, then no choice but to look for alternative supplier then.

I have a slightly different issue, customer who does not pay. I know for big projects of hundreds of thousands or millions, you can bring it to court but for smaller amounts it seems not viable to engage a lawyer.

Oh, sorry for the vague description and the wrong term used, they are in fact, the manufacturer.
What I mean is the manufacturer's employee does not respond to your email. You have to send a few emails to gain their attention.

For your case, either etinge or edyek recommended to receive cheque from them. At least your customer will think twice as they will get blacklisted. It is in the previous page.

Just sharing. Hope to learn more from this thread. TQ to all sifus! notworthy.gif smile.gif

Hi Sifus,

Is it ok if I start my business first to test the water then only register the business as a sole prop?

I plan to import goods from Thailand and the government has the custom record. Is it legit?

What about ability to socialize? Is it important?

I would like to ask, for starters, should we hire people to design our website or should we do it ourselves?
