QUOTE FIFA names World Player nominees
(FIFA.com) Monday 7 December 2009
The contenders for this year’s FIFA World Player of the Year and FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year awards, which will be presented at the Kongresshaus in Zurich, FIFA’s home city, on 21 December 2009, were announced on Monday. In alphabetical order, the male nominees are Andres Iniesta (Spain), Kaka (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and Xavi (Spain), while Cristiane (Brazil), Inka Grings (Germany), Marta (Brazil), Birgit Prinz (Germany) and Kelly Smith (England) will contest the women’s award.
These nominees were confirmed after a poll in which the coaches and captains of men’s and women’s national teams from around the world voted for candidates from a list drawn up by football experts from the FIFA Football Committee and the FIFA Committee for Women’s Football.
The FIFA World Player Gala 2009 will have a number of exciting new features, including two new awards:
• The FIFA/FIFPro World XI, which will honour the best 11 players of the year as chosen by over 50,000 professional football players from all over the world.
• The FIFA Puskás Award, created in honour and in memory of Ferenc Puskás, the captain and star of the Hungarian national team during the 1950s, will be presented to the player – man or woman – who has scored the “most beautiful goal” during the past year.
For more information about the FIFA World Player Gala, including a list of previous winners, please visit www.FIFA.com. Let vote and discuss This post has been edited by faris21: Dec 8 2009, 02:21 PM

my vote goes to messi. But to me the real unsung hero to the last season barca CL glory was iniesta.. So the 2nd & 3rd place could fall to CR9 & iniesta

Everyone knows Messi will win it. Ronaldo would be second but maybe not after his sending off last weekend which might trigger some votes to Iniesta.

QUOTE(ELm_ELm @ Dec 11 2009, 10:52 AM) mai oh mai...why only 3 votes for xavi Because EVERYBODY accept the fact that one of the prerequisites to win these individual awards is to score 25++ goals per season. Those 3 I believe are not in the same wavelength

my vote goes to xavi

it's funny Luis Fabiano didn't make it in the top 5. he's had 9 WC qualifying goals including 2 againts Argentina and the last person to score as many (or near that many) were former winners like Ronaldinho and Ronaldo. He's had a good season so far, 13 goals in 16 games.
again, this award is clearly biased only to Champions League finalists just like previous seasons.
This award is based on votes and I think the voters look at the statistics more than anything else and Messi's the most outstanding amongst all of the other 4.

Memorable moments like the come from behind Confed final againts USA where Brazil were down 2-0 and Fabiano stepped up to score twice to level the score. Scoring two goals against a team of Argie's stature in the WC qualifying and another two against current World Cup winners, Italy in the Confed Cup clearly shows his quality playing with the big teams. Isn't that "high class glory" Faris? Able to win games for your team just when they need you to perform. I can assure you, these Stats are very very comparable with the current top 5 shortlist.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been named Fifa World Footballer of the Year to complete a stunning 2009 for the Argentine forward.
The 22-year-old, who helped Barca win the Club World Cup on Saturday - their sixth trophy of the year - also won the Ballon d'Or award this year.
"A magnificent year for me and Barca has ended in the best way," said Messi.
He beat off competition from last year's winner Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.
Messi becomes the first Argentine to win the award, which was inaugurated in 1991, and it completes a stunning year for the brilliant winger.
He helped Barca to an unprecedented treble of Champions League, La Liga and Spanish Cup last season, scoring the second goal in their 2-0 win over Manchester United in Rome in May.
This season the Catalan club have added the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and Club World Cup to their roll of honour, beating Argentine side Estudiantes in Abu Dhabi to complete a stellar year.
At the start of the month, Messi beat Ronaldo to the European Footballer of the Year award by a massive margin - 473 points to 233 - and has now succeeded Ronaldo to win the Fifa award too.
However, Messi has played down the attention, saying: "No, please, I am not king of the world now, nor the number one, I don't believe in those things.
"I am the same person as always and I have the good fortune to play in a great team. It was an historic year for Barca and for me but it's thanks to the work of everyone."
At a glittering gala at the Zurich Kongresshaus, England stars John Terry and Steven Gerrard were named in the FIFPro World XI, voted for by their fellow professionals.
Fellow Premier League stars Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Fernando Torres were also picked, along with former Manchester United star Ronaldo.
Real Madrid's Iker Casillas was picked in goal and Barca quartet Dani Alves, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi completed the line-up.
Cristiano Ronaldo won the inaugural Fifa Puskas Award for the best goal of the year for his stunning 40-yard strike while playing for Manchester United against FC Porto in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in April.
Brazilian Marta won the Women's World Player of the Year for a record fourth consecutive time, beating off competition from England striker Kelly Smith.
The 31-year-old Smith, who plays her club football in the United States, starred in the England side that reached the final of Euro 2009.
"This is a real honour for me," said Smith. "It was tough for me to leave my home country because I'm very proud and passionate to be English.
"I just wanted to be amongst the best players in the world and that's certainly the case and I'm now pursuing my dream."
The prizes were voted for by the captains and head coaches of the men's and women's national teams.
FIFPro team of the year: Casillas; Dani Alves, Evra, Terry, Vidic; Xavi, Iniesta, Gerrard; Ronaldo, Messi, Torres.

He was more consistent and when he was missing in the side Barca seemed a whole level lower compared to if Messi wasn't there. But Messi is definitely flashier and more talented which is why he won.
