Phew... Just finished reading all the pages but I don't think I absorbed them all. Anyway, since I study in Australia, is it better for me to get a macpac there? Is it cheaper in Aus then in M'sia?
I was actually looking at the Deuter Futura Pro 42 for an event called Inward Bound. They will send us with our eyes masked to a unknown place and map will be given to us to run back to the designated location. I am going to participate in one of the lowest division which is about 20-30KM. I am going to use this bag to travel around Australia as well.

QUOTE(Keong @ Feb 9 2010, 05:22 PM) Hi LKM....macpacs are great packs. They are cheaper in Spore but not available in Malaysia at all. Other brands you can look at are Wilderness Equipment (I like this brand), One Planet (the Ferrari of backpacks in AUS), Mountain Designs and of course Kathmandu. All these are very popular australian brands. I honestly think a Deuter 42 liters pack may be a bit small for you, I would personally go for something between 50 to 65 liters for use in Australia, especially on trips. This is my suggestion, pack all the things you think you need on your trip into a bag. Bring it to the shop and try out a few packs by stuffing in the things. Give a 20% spare room for extra stuff (food, raincoat etc). You may need a bigger pack for use there because unlike Malaysia, you would need bulky clothing to keep you warm at nite. Not to mention the sleeping bags. This would give you a good idea on what size of pack you ought to get. If you are on a budget, go and look in ebay Australia. Prices of the brands mentioned above will likely be very high on ebay.au BUT brands from the US are very cheap there. Australians somehow love the brands they are used to, so its an upper hand for you. I'd recommend you look at brand names like Osprey, Gregory, Karrimor or even Berghaus. I bought a few when I was down there, really happy with them. Hope that helps. Thanks for your suggestion. I have visited Macpack, Mountain Design and Kathmandu. They seem to be very expensive. I am looking for a pack for an event like Amazing Race. I am looking at pack around 30L. I am also looking for 3L water bladder, head light (ranging from $30-100 in Kathmandu =.= ), thermal and water proof jacket. Why is a water-proof jacket so ridiculously priced in Australia? (AUD350-500) Did you suggest me buying US brands from eBay Australia? Do you mind to list me some recommended packs? Thank you.

Hey Keong, haven't seen you for a long time. It's the one used by Ed Stafford who walked the Amazon river. He used Cascade 75 FL if I am not mistaken. Macpac New Zealand is having clearance sales on Cascade 65 which is about RM700-800.

QUOTE(71ers @ Nov 23 2010, 06:22 PM) Glad u guys brought this up ... Can we get MacPAc NZ in Malaysia ? I am not sure. Even though Sports Connection in Sg is listed as Macpac Sg dealer, there isn't any Macpac product on their website. Most probably I will ask my friend to help me courier it to Malaysia. Is there any heavy tax imposed on such travel equipment?

QUOTE(Keong @ Nov 23 2010, 07:34 PM) Hi guys....wow...this is getting interesting by the minute. LKM...for that price, I think it is a good buy. As for getting them, Sports Connection (Sg) or Tearproof in Malaysia is your best bet. They do not have them listed on their website but they definitely have them in their retail outlets. I would advise against shipping the pack in. For one, it is gonna cost a LOT and secondly, it may be taxed (could be a lot). Best bet if you are buying it from overseas, is to get a friend to bring it in OR ship it into Sg and go down there to collect. Sg don't have tax on this type of gear I belief. Macpac is damn good I reckon. Just that it is a bit on the heavy side. Do they have any sort of price list online? I feel quite lazy to drag myself to Sg or KL just to buy the pack. Well, it could be worthwhile to try them before I buy since ergonomics is the most important. Macpac Cascade 65 is about 3kg. The number reads heavy but I reckon when you put it on your back, you can barely feel it since most of the weight is distributed to the hip which they claim is the strongest muscle (should be tongue if my memory serves right). ps: I need a backpack to climb Mt. Kinabalu.

Really? A cheaper alternative is Deuter Futura Pro 42. Any opinion on this?

Ulgy packs are probably advantageous to backpackers since the smugglers will less likely target on you.
