I'm getting a 42 inch Plaxio plasma soon.
Don't really know much but just tested my Xbox 360 with it and it supports 1080i
Didn't try it in 720p because I thought 1080i would look better so I didn't bother sad.gif

1080p through component is available on both consoles. Having an HDTV that can actually accept 1080p through component is very unlikely.

There are a few in Malaysia, but numbers are increasing at the rest of the world.

Some that we have here are:
Sony BRAVIA X-Series - 40" RM15,999 46" RM19,999 52" RM50,000
Sony SXRD Rear Projection - 50" RM15,000 60" RM19,000 70" RM30,000
Sony SXRD Front Projection - VPL-VW100 RM32,999 VPL-VW50 RM17,999
Etc.

Sony is basically the High Roller of Full HD products in Malaysia.

3 years ago a decent 720p 42" plasma model could set you back RM25,000. My dad bought our Pioneer Plasma for 27,999.

This year my dad bought a 42" 720p Hitachi plasma for 13,999.

I guess 2-3 years from now 1080p models could go into the same phase. If a 40" 1080p model is around RM15,000 now, by next year that would be around 13,000 and by the next, 10,000 is possible.

I dunno laugh.gif

with 32" 720p and 1080p looks the same, no difference. A good 32" HDTV could could set u back 5k++.

Samsung does good ones, why not you go check at :-
Tan Boon Ming - Old Klang Road, Bangsar Village.
Best Denki - One Utama

They are quite reliable.

Yesterday, yesterday I was one of the few in Malaysia who has demo-ed the Sony VPL-VW50 (pearl) at Mediaplex KLCC. So, I helped out a bit. This was no means a small projector, was'nt a light one either. Once we took it out of the box, and set it up on the table, we proceeded with shifting the lens to fit a leviathan 100" DNP supernova screen. Put in a disc then there was a problem - HDMI issue. After 30 minutes or so we found out that the HDMI output on the DVD player was loose, WTF. Changed settings on DVD player to 1920 X 1080i and let the Pearl do the de-interlacing to 1080p.

The result? Outstanding picture quality that matches the Pearl's Big Brother the Ruby (VPL-VW100) in most parts. Picture quality out of the box is about 80-85% of the Ruby's quality. The Black depth is very deep, and colours were rich and vibrant. A downside that we saw was that the Pearl lacked sharpness and results in a somewhat soft picture. De-interlacing was neat but once in a while you could still see interlace artifacts. This could be gone with the help of a video processor like DVDO, Lumagen, or the Crystalio II. Even with NR (Noise Reduction) off we could see none or little noise on the screen even with a sub-1k Ringgit Pioneer DVD player. I'm going there again on the weekends and might just bring my 360 along to test it out. I spoke to the Executive director Mr. Tan, nice chap and obviously he has a lot of knowledge in AV. He also said if i could wait, they're bringing in the Mitsubishi HC5000 by the end of this month to be demo-ed. I'm keen to wait and see how it performs. All I know is that It's cheaper than the Pearl, and the de-interlacing capability as well as sharpness is a notch above the Pearl.

Still, we will have to wait. I'd be happy to help them set up the mitsubishi once it arrives.

Those who are interested in this product and Mediaplex's wide range of products can contact Mr. Tan at 0123368838.

The Sony VPL-VW50 is sold at RM17,999, whereas the Sony VPL-VW100 is sold at RM32,999.

LOL to be honest there are plenty more sifus like PSPboy, me I'm just an amateur fan  notworthy.gif

I will recommend either the Sony or Philips, if you can get it at that price. These two manufacturers have the best picture quality of the CRT bunch, IMO. Not only that, they also are generous with connections. You'll want S-video for Astro, Component for PS2 and DVD.

I would stay away from the Samsung Slimfits, are the picture quality is so-so. Hope this helps!

QUOTE(Hiiryu @ Dec 21 2006, 03:45 AM)
Hey guys, it's actually my first time posting here, but I've been lurking for a while, hehe.
Anyway, I'm getting a LCD tv soon, so I've been checking around and have narrowed down my choices to 3 brands/models.

1) Samsung
LA40N71B

2) Sony - Bravia
KLV40V200A

3) Sharp - Aquos
LC37BX5M

My questions:

1) Which one of these models do you recommend? To me, Samsung has the best looks but from what I read from this thread, it seems that the Aquos it the better choice. Keep in mind that for now I would be mainly using the tv to watch Astro and play my Ps2. No Ps3 yet, but I should be getting it sometime next year.

2) Does the Sharp support 720p and 1080i? I'm pretty sure that both the Samsung and Sony does, but I can't find any info on the Sharp(I even have the brochure with me but it doesn't say anything about it, just the resolution - 1,366 x 769 x 3 dots(?)

3) How bad does Astro perform with these tv's? I really don't want to resort to watching football at the mamaks if the quality is too bad...

Thanks in advance happy.gif

Oi go to sleep whistling.gif

JK.

First of all, Hope you have a pleasant stay here in Lowyat and please make sure to stay out of trouble.

1. The Samsung N-Series is part of the mosel series. They are the flagship of Samsung's LCD TVs and offer a better picture then their R and S-Series. It offers 2 HDMI inputs like the Sharp. It has multiple card slots to view all your pictures and vids. Printer input and USB inputs are a nice touch. Picture quality is comparable to the other two. But it's features make it a better buy. It also has looks to match. Samsung's LCD TVs look great anywhere in your home.

2. Yes. It does.

3. They all look more or less the same. The quality is watchable, it doesn't go to the extend where you want to kill yourself, no. It's pretty decent actually.

All in all i think you should go to a shop to compare these three.

I'd take the samsung since it's fine with gaming, the price is right, and there are many features. This TV is for the casual gamer who sits back, relax, and appreciates what he sees in the telly. Go for it.

Pspboy, what say you for samsung LA26R71B. Considering my budget, i couldn't go more for the 32" but the usage for the tv is mainly gaming. icon_question.gif

It's a very good TV both for gaming and astro purposes. Many people in the world aren't complaining bout this HDTV. Arj is using this one. I have a slightly older model, but still my games on ps2 and 360 look marvellous. DNIe doesn't kacau as much as older model so yopu shouldn't worry.

rally tat good? how much does one of those upscaler cost?

i just recently use the component cables for my dvd player, i think it looks quite fine to me with progressive running, so does the upscaler means it can even bring the image to a better state?

upscaling works with HDMI input only.

Well by then maybe the price of Yamaha VX1700 will come down. Really depends what you want the AV receiver to be used for. Going with Marantz for the to buy the Marantz 7300 series which is a CD player made in Japan. If I had the money would have gone with Daliant speakers or Sonus Fabers hehe. Other alternative on AV receivers are Denon but I am not fond of them.
