Apple today released an update to Boot Camp to include support for Microsoft Windows 7, which was released last October, as well as addressing other issues and adding support for the latest Apple peripherals. Boot Camp is a Apple's tool to allow Intel Mac owners to boot dual boot Windows alongside Mac OS X. Running Windows under Boot Camp provides you with a fully compatible Windows environment.
This update adds support for Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate), addresses issues with the Apple trackpad, turns off the red digital audio port LED on laptop computers when it is not being used, and supports the Apple wireless keyboard and Apple Magic mouse.

Boot Camp 3.1 (in 64-bit and 32-bit versions) requires an authentic copy of Microsoft Windows 7 or Microsoft Windows 7 upgrade, as well as an Intel-based Mac computer. In a support document about Boot Camp and Windows 7 last updated on January 6, Apple also noted that the following computers would not be supported for use with Windows 7 in Boot Camp:
iMac (17-inch, Early 2006)
iMac (17-inch, Late 2006)
iMac (20-inch, Early 2006)
iMac (20-inch, Late 2006)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2006)
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2006)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2006)
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2006)
Mac Pro (Mid 2006, Intel Xeon Dual-core 2.66GHz or 3GHz)

In addition to Boot Camp 3.1, Apple has also released Boot Camp Utility for Windows 7 Upgrade, which is needed before upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 and "safely unmounts the read-only Macintosh volume on Microsoft Vista."

Apple releases Safari 4.0.4 with security flaw patch
According to Apple, the flaw allowed maliciously crafted images with an embedded color profile to execute arbitrary code, or unexpectedly terminate the application. The issue does not affect Mac OS X 10.6 systems, and was already addressed with Security Update 2009-005 for Mac OS X 10.5.8 systems.

The 36.2MB download is available via Software Update. In addition to the security patch, Safari 4.0.4 is said to offer:

Improved JavaScript performance

Improved Full History Search performance for users with a large number of history items

Stability improvements for third-party plug-ins, the search field and Yahoo Mail

There seems to be a bug somewhere which renders the four-finger gesture on the trackpad unusable... however this can be rectified after a PRAM reset....

Finally downloaded and upgraded! Apple forced a 499MB down my MacBook Pro. I wonder why do you guys have such a small download size?

The installation went fine and things were really responsive. I mean 10.6.1 is responsive to me but this new update just make it a notch faster! I'm happy the 4 finger gesture issue has been resolved along with other bugs/issues! Really glad with my MBP now rclxms.gif

Well i also not sure how to say in word...

well when u press f1 or f2 where u control the brightness right? and the screen will appear the control and u can see the level right? and the total level is 16 where the most brightness level is u need to press 16 times
before upgrade the my level is only 3 and now after upgrade i need to increase the level until 12 level so it will be same brightness as before upgrade.

my mbpro decided to run out of batt halfway through the recent OS update.

unfortunately im having problems with it now,
- start up takes around 10 mins
- system refuses to shut down (notifies me that i would have to hold down the power button instead)
- my finger slide gestures do not work

have tried reinstalling the Snow Leopard but i cant go through with the restarting stage, also ran Disk Utility and Repair Disk yet there's still no difference.

It reset PMC..something like that.I'm not really sure.

Hi. I need an assistance here. Today i just bought a new MBP 2.53Mhz from LYP Apple Store. A big switchover from Windows to Mac.

However, today is my first trouble encoutered here. I can say its not a problem but no experience handling Mac. Sorry, i'm so naive using Mac.

How to open few browsers at a time? It seems that i stuck with the same page but don't know how to open few more? TQ.

You can also drag any tab from the existing window out to the open space/desktop and automatically it will open a new window.

Otherwise, Cmd-Opt-Click on any link to open in new window.

Java Updates for Snow Leopard and Leopard

Apple today released a pair of software updates for users of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Leopard, delivering updated versions of Java containing the latest performance and security fixes.

- Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1 weighs in at 78 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.2.
Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1 delivers improved reliability, security, and compatibility for Java SE 6. Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 1 supersedes the previous Java for Mac OS X 10.6.

This release updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_17. This release is only for Mac OS X 10.6.2 or later versions of Mac OS X 10.6. This release of Java SE 6 is available on Intel-based Macs only.

Details of the security content included in the update can be found in the associated support document.

- Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6 weighs in at 122 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6 delivers improved reliability, security, and compatibility for J2SE 5.0 and Java SE 6. Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 6 supersedes all previous updates of Java for Mac OS X 10.5.

This release updates J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_22, and updates Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_17. J2SE 1.4.2 is no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues and is therefore disabled by default in this update. i just installed the EFI 1.8 update. according to the instruction, im supposed to launch software update again to install the superdrive update thing. but somehow my software update won't launch anymore sad.gif anyone got a clue?

when i launch it, the icon will bounce at the dock, n after a few seconds it will just sit there (right clicking tells me the app is not respoding). the app itself never launched. software update is listed in the force quit list (but no 'not responding'), but not in cmd+tab.

Bootcamp software upgrade is a Windows executable file. So you have to run it on your Windows in BootCamp environment.

Me updated, the trackpad is not as sensitive as it used to be...but still not good enough for me.

Firmware Update for 27" iMac

Apple has issued a new firmware update today to address issues that may cause intermittent display flickering. Earlier today reports had indicated that Apple may have even stopped production of the 27" iMac due to this persistent issue.
Updates the display firmware on 27-inch iMac systems to address issues that may cause intermittent display flickering.

The 27-inch iMac Display Update will update the display firmware on your iMac. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your iMac during this update.

Apple had previously issued a graphics firmware update in December with little success. Today's firmware update appears to address the Display hardware itself. The 27-inch iMac Display Update Firmware is 294KB in size and can be downloaded from Apple's site. Installation instructions are provided here

eh eh...ok im not sure if there's any connection or not... but juz ask lah

yesterday i reinstalled my Office2008... i got it when it 1st came out so it was version 12.0 (now is 12.2). i did save the 12.2 update DMG lah. so when i install v12.0... after finish i tried to install the 12.2 update but it said the installer cant be used for my current version. so i just used autoupdate, but it downloaded 12.1 for me i dunno why... after finish upgrade to 12.1, autoupdate again, finally i can download 12.2

my iphoto also same problem. i think i installed 7.1.3. launched software updates, it downloaded 7.1.4 for me 1st. after that, ran software updates again, it downloaded 7.1.5 for me. hmm

so far only these two softwares la. not sure later how

Apple Releases Security Update 2010-003 for Snow Leopard and Leopard
Apple today released a series of security updates targeting users of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Leopard. According to the support document for the release, the updates address a single vulnerability related to handling of embedded fonts by Apple Type Services. Discovery of the vulnerability is credited to noted cybersecurity researcher Charlie Miller, who last month disclosed his discovery of 20 new zero-day holes in Mac OS X.

- Security Update 2010-003 (Snow Leopard) (6.50 MB)
- Security Update 2010-003 (Leopard-Client) (218.6 MB)
- Security Update 2010-003 (Leopard-Server) (379.5 MB)

The Leopard versions posted to Apple's site incorporate previous security updates, explaining their large file size relative to the Snow Leopard version.

Apple also released Server Admin Tools 10.6.3, an update to Apple's package for installing remote administration tools to non-server machines. The update delivers 16 documented improvements to several of the package's components.

Added on April 15, 2010, 8:02 am27-Inch iMac Firmware Updates Address High Processor Usage, Display Backlight, and Target Display Mode Issues

Apple today continues its barrage of updates with the release of a pair of firmware updates for its 27-inch iMac models addressing a trio of issues.

27-inch iMac EFI FW Update 1.0, weighing in at 2.1 MB and requiring Mac OS X 10.6.3, is recommended for all quad-core 27-inch iMacs and addresses a pair of issues related to high processor usage and display backlighting.
- Resolves an issue that sometimes caused high processor utilization while playing audio through the headphone output mini-jack.

- Resolves an issue that prevented the display backlight from turning on after powering on the iMac.

The 27-inch iMacs are not the only current Mac models to have experienced problems with processor performance during audio-related tasks, as Apple's Mac Pro line received a software update in mid-February to address its own issues with heat and performance while handling audio-related tasks.

Apple's other firmware release for the 27-inch iMac today, known as 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0, makes unspecified compatibility fixes to Target Display Mode. The feature, currently available only on 27-inch iMacs, allows the machine to be used as a secondary display via its Mini DisplayPort connector. The update weighs in at 397 KB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 and the 27-inch iMac EFI Update 1.0 also released today.

Apple Released Safari 5 with extensions, expanded HTML5 support

Apple on Monday released Safari 5, the latest version of its desktop Web browser, with a 30 percent performance increase, the addition of Bing search and secure sandboxed extensions, as well as support for more than a dozen new HTML5 technologies.

The update is available for download from Apple's website or via Software Update on Mac OS X. Safari 5 is a 39.1MB update.

"Safari continues to lead the pack in performance, innovation and standards support," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Safari now runs on over 200 million devices worldwide and its open source WebKit engine runs on over 500 million devices."

Available for both Mac and Windows, Safari 5 includes improved developer tools and supports a number of new HTML5 technologies that allow developers to create rich, dynamic websites.

The latest version of Apple's Web browser also includes Safari Reader, which makes it easy to read single and multi-page articles on the web by presenting them in a new, scrollable view without any additional content or clutter. When Safari 5 detects an article, users can click on the Reader icon in the Smart Address Field to display the entire article for clear, uninterrupted reading with options to enlarge, print or send via email.

Powered by the Nitro JavaScript engine, Apple said Safari 5 on the Mac runs JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4, three percent faster than Chrome 5.0, and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6. Safari 5 loads new pages faster using Domain Name System (DNS) prefetching, and improves the caching of previously viewed pages to return to them more quickly.

Safari 5 adds more than a dozen powerful HTML5 features that allow web developers to create media-rich experiences, including full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video. Other new HTML5 features in Safari 5 include HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 sectioning elements, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, HTML5 Ruby, HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource and WebSocket.

The new, free Safari Developer Program allows developers to customize and enhance Safari 5 with extensions based on standard web technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The Extension Builder, new in Safari 5, simplifies the development, installation and packaging of extensions. For enhanced security and stability, Safari Extensions are sandboxed, signed with a digital certificate from Apple and run solely in the browser.

The details match a support document published over the weekend that suggested the release of Safari 5 for Mac and Windows was imminent.

I like the Reader feature on Safari 5. Makes it look like the subtle popup effect you get when you're downloading comics in the Marvel comic app on iPad. The layout looks exactly like The Early Edition RSS reader app too, complete with images. biggrin.gif

Just did a quick non-scientific comparison of Chrome 5 vs Safari 5

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

It looks like Safari is mitigating raw memory use with increased virtual memory caches.

I like the Cover Flow of bookmarks (Safari > Preferences > New Tab > Bookmarks Bar) and the new speed is enough for me to forego Chrome's address bar. Although I've yet to find a need for the Reader function I think I'll be making the switch back to Safari once my three essential Extensions (Flashblack, Adblock and LastPass) are written for Safari.

These "extensions" for Safari have been around for AGES. Adblock for Safari have existed since 10.4.

Flashblock = Clicktoflash http://clicktoflash.com/
Adblock = Safari Adblocker http://www.sweetpproductions.com/safariadblocker/
No clue what LastPass is.

Is that why I see that Chrome Thread here? cos people dont know the plugins exists?

Written in Extension format. Yes Safari plug-ins have existed for a long time, but Safari 5 now officially supports them with its own SDK.

The Chrome thread exists because its an alternative browser that has worked better than Safari.

Yes - and to certain extreme extents, no - extensions can speed up browsing and improve your browsing experience. Typically, plug-ins and extensions add or remove functionality not available in the browser natively. For example, AdBlock filters out advertisements, ClicktoFlash lets you activate Flash elements manually and LastPass is a cloud-based password manager.

Yurp on 40-50 degree, the fan keep on 2000rpm. If the temperature increase then will increase fan speed up to 4500++rpm.

Adobe did claim that 10.6.4 included an outdated version of flash... if you have updated flash, does that fix the problem...?

PS: Flash is dying, and Apple's promoting HTML5... maybe that's Apple's tactic to discourage flash content on Safari... tongue.gif

Apple firmware update tackles MacBook Pro freezes

Apple on Thursday released an EFI firmware update for 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 models that fixes a freezing or stalling problem.

According to Apple, EFI Firmware Update 1.9, which requires Mac OS X 10.6.4, "resolves a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze during startup or intermittently stall during operation." The update, which is a 2.16MB download, also improves external display compatibility.

Issues with stalling and external displays on the mid 2010 Macbook Pros had been acknowledged in Apple Support articles.

The most recent revision to the MacBook Pro line came in April.

Added on October 30, 2010, 11:21 amApple Releases iPhoto 9.0.1 to Address Data Loss

Apple has released a version update (9.0.1) for iPhoto 9 (part of iLife '11) that should prevent the possibility of data loss when upgrading from iPhoto 8 to iPhoto 9 (aka iPhoto '11).
This update addresses issues that, in extremely rare cases, could result in data loss when upgrading a library from an earlier version of iPhoto.

A support document walks through the process to prevent this from happening. The instructions, however, are a bit confusing. It seems you must upgrade to iPhoto 9.0.1 after you've installed iLife '11 but before you launch iPhoto for the first time. The launching of iPhoto '11 initiates the upgrade process to your iPhoto library which is where data loss can occur.
Before an existing iPhoto library can be used with iPhoto '11 it must be upgraded. This process occurs when you open your library with iPhoto '11 for the first time. In extremely rare cases, if you do not follow the recommendations below during the upgrade process you may experience data loss. This article outlines the various events that may occur during the library upgrade process and offers advice on how to avoid data loss.
