Scholes: Carry on Sir Alex

QUOTE
James Robson

November 19, 2009

PAUL Scholes reckons Sir Alex Ferguson can keep United on the glory trail well into his 70s.

The veteram midfielder has told his manager to shelve any retirement plans - claiming he can continue to outwit his rivals for years to come.

Fergie refuses to set any date for when he plans to call it a day - but after recently celebrating 23 years at Old Trafford and nearing his 68th birthday, time is running out.

Scholes, though, is convinced he can keep going as long as he wants. He said: "His record speaks for itself. Twenty-three years is a long time and, hopefully, he can continue to be here and win trophies for a long time to come.

"Other teams don't have the benefit of having a manager for so long.

“I think it goes to show what can be achieved if you have a manger for so long and the trophies they can win.

“I've known no different. When I played for England there was a change of manager from time to time and it probably didn't seem to help most of the time. I've been lucky enough to play under one manager and it has been great.”

Ferguson has got the better of all-comers since taking over at United in 1986.

This season he faces a new test in Carlo Ancelotti, who has made an impressive start at Chelsea – currently five points clear of United at the top of the table.

But Scholes is confident the champions can bridge the gap

This is the last international break for a while,” he said. “Then we have to kick on in the league and all the major competitions.”

Alex Ferguson allowed in the dugout against Everton

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson will be in the dugout for Manchester United's Premier League clash with Everton on Saturday despite been hit with a two-match suspension.

United's boss was punished for comments on referee Alan Wiley's fitness after a 2-2 draw with Sunderland in October.

But the Football Association said that the ban does not start until 14 days after last week's disciplinary hearing.

Ferguson will sit in the stands at Portsmouth on 28 November and again for the Carling Cup tie with Tottenham.

The FA handed the 67-year-old a four-game ban, with two of those suspended until the end of the 2010/11 season, a £20,000 fine and warned him about his future conduct.

Ferguson made disparaging remarks about Wiley's fitness after his side were held to a draw at home by the Black Cats on 3 October.

Ferguson said at the time: "The pace of the game demanded a referee who was fit. He was not fit."

He later said he was sorry for any personal embarrassment caused to Wiley, claiming the comments were to highlight "what I believe to be a serious and important issue in the game".

The suspended sanction will be automatically activated should he be found guilty of a similar charge before the end of the 2010/11 season on top of any penalty imposed for that offence.

Ferguson has a history of improper conduct charges for incidents involving referees.

In the 2007/08 season he was given a two-match touchline ban and fined £5,000 for a rant at referee Mark Clattenburg during a match at Bolton.

And during the last campaign he was banned for two games and fined £10,000 after remonstrating with referee Mike Dean after a match against Hull.

Ferguson soothes Rio fears

QUOTE
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is optimistic Rio Ferdinand will only be sidelined for weeks, rather than months.

Ferdinand has endured an injury-plagued campaign and has missed United's last four matches with what was thought to be a calf complaint.

However, the Premier League champions have traced the centre-half's latest injury troubles to a long-standing back problem, which reports suggested could keep Ferdinand out until the New Year.

The England international will miss Saturday's game against Everton, but Ferguson believes the 31-year-old could return within a fortnight.

"It is back related," said Ferguson.

"We are not putting a timescale on it, but it is not a situation where we are saying it will be months, it might be a couple of weeks or it might be a few weeks but that is it."

Ferguson is also unsure whether Jonny Evans will be fit to face Everton after the youngster picked up an injury on international duty with Northern Ireland.

He added: "We're fighting hard to get Evans available, but he's not trained yet. We'll see how he goes today [Friday]."

John O'Shea is also a defensive worry after suffering a thigh injury during the Republic of Ireland's controversial World Cup play-off exit at the hands of France on Wednesday night.

Captain Gary Neville is suspended and Fabio da Silva is out, so Ferguson may be forced to partner Wes Brown with the fit-again Nemanja Vidic and select Rafael da Silva and Patrice Evra at full-back.

Injured pair making progress

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson feels that his staff have got to the root of Rio Ferdinand’s recent injury woes, while Owen Hargreaves is making steady progress in his return from over a year out with tendonitis in his knees.

Ferdinand hasn’t played since the defeat to Liverpool a month ago, and this spell on the sidelines is the culmination of a series of back and calf injuries that have troubled him throughout 2009.

Some media reports had suggested Rio wouldn’t be available for selection until early 2010, but the manager quashed those rumours on Friday, saying that the Reds defender is now closer to a permanent cure for the problem.

“We’ve identified it,” he said. “We think it is back-related. It started off as a calf injury, but it happens quite a lot that they can be related to lower back problems. We’re not putting a timescale on it but it’s not a situation where we’re saying ‘months’ or anything like that, probably in two or three weeks he should be back. He’ll be back training in two weeks anyway.”

For Hargreaves – a more long-term absentee – it’s a matter of making gradual but steady progress as he continues to recover from the double knee surgery that has kept him out since September 2008.

“He’s doing his training very well,” Sir Alex says. “I think it’s more a confidence thing for the lad to come back into real full training with us. He’s doing quite good work with the physios and football related training, not in a competitive level at the moment.

“I think that’s being out for a year and two months. We’re of the mind that we’ll take our time and not rush it, get his confidence back in that respect."

We all do know Rooney used to score in batches. He will score for few games running then hit a bad patch then will return to scoring again after some time.

Killer touch delights Carrick

QUOTE
Some Old Trafford matches have been too close for comfort this season - thankfully Everton wasn't one of them as the Reds racked up a three-goal lead heading into the last 15 minutes.

The cushion was certainly appreciated by second goalscorer Michael Carrick, who admitted to being vexed by games such as Arsenal (2-1), Birmingham (1-0), Bolton (2-1) and Sunderland (2-2) when the Reds have been unable to rest for a second.

"I think it was very important for us to bounce back with a good win," Carrick told MUTV.

"Everton always had a threat with Louis Saha up there and Yakubu coming on, so we had to keep pushing for another goal. It was nice to see the second and third go in. It meant we could play our football and relax a little bit.

"It's been a tad frustrating when we haven't been able to kill teams off at home. We've been creating enough chances to do it, but the goals just haven't been going in for us.

"Thankfully they did against Everton and although we could have had a few more, I think the scoreline reflects fairly on the game."

United's killer second goal came from Carrick's left boot, and although it was a cool finish from Ryan Giggs' pass, it couldn't rival the thrill created by Darren Fletcher's opener.

"It was a stunning volley," praised Carrick. "I thought it was going to be a bit too high for him to keep down but he managed to get his shoulder over it, his technique was spot on.

"You can see how much it meant to Fletch to score. His performances are really at the highest level now. He's one of the best midfielders around at the moment and it's great to play alongside him. He's really on top of his game.

"It was nice for the midfielders to chip in and help the strikers. We've got to score goals to win matches and we can't just rely on the front two to do it every week.

"The midfielders have started the season well and we need to contribute a few more but as long as we're winning, who scores is really not an issue. It's winning that matters."

United's ninth win in thirteen league games so far means the champions are well-placed to assail Chelsea's lead at the top of the table over the next two months, even after losing the so-called six-pointer at Stamford Bridge.

"Losing to Chelsea was a blow," says Carrick, "but we took a lot of confidence from the game. Today (Saturday) showed that result (0-1) didn't knock us off our stride. We know what we can do and we know we can still be up there where it counts in the league."

Boss pleased with patient Reds

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson praised his players' patience and persistence in wearing down Everton to eventually claim a comfortable and impressive 3-0 victory.

The Reds rarely looked out of control in the match, with first goalscorer Darren Fletcher epitomising United's energy and industry.

"I was pleased," Sir Alex told ESPN. "It was a controlled performance. We showed a lot of patience, particularly in the first half when we were trying to open them up. Fortunately we got the first goal at the right time."

United had to weather a spell of Everton pressure after the break as the robust Yukubu added yet further strength to the Toffees attack. But the Reds withstood that period and Michael Carrick soon struck United's second goal.

"They made a change, bringing Yukubu on and going direct," added the boss. "They have a lot of power and height up front which you have to handle. But the second goal put us in the comfort zone and from then on I didn't think we could lose it."

With United back up to second spot above Arsenal and keeping the pressure up on Chelsea, Sir Alex wants to see his side kick on and mount a long winning run to tee up the usual title push in the New Year.

"That's the name of the game for us [to kick on now]," the boss said. "I stand by the view that if we get to New Year within a point, in front or round about the leaders, we have a big chance in the second half of the season."

Fletcher targets title push

QUOTE
United's focus is now entirely on a relentless drive to be in a strong league position come January, as the Reds attempt to clinch a fourth Barclays Premier League title in a row in 2010.

With Sir Alex Ferguson's side already through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and the international fixtures now completed for 2009, the seasoned campaigners at Old Trafford can focus firmly on domestic matters.

"It's a busy period now and it's all club, club, club," says Darren Fletcher.

"The Champions League is important for us, but we've done our job in the tournament now so we can look forward. We need to kick on and put a run of league wins together.

"Beating Everton was a good start. They came and made it difficult for us but we kept the ball and we were patient and took our chances when they came."

There is a clear determination in the dressing room to ensure Saturday's comprehensive 3-0 victory will be the first of a long winning run into the New Year.

"We are five points behind Chelsea, but we want to win every game from now until the end of December," says Patrice Evra.

"We have already qualified for Europe and the World Cup qualifiers have all finished, so we need to concentrate on the league because we want to win a fourth title in a row."

CSKA STUN UNITED WITH £25M VALUATION

QUOTE
MANCHESTER UNITED have been rocked by CSKA Moscow's decision to slap a £25million price tag on goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

The Russian shot-stopper is high on Sir Alex Ferguson's list of targets as he searches for Edwin Van der Sar's long-term successor.

The Scot was hugely impressed by the 23-year-old in his side's two recent Champions League clashes with CSKA.

The Russians are desperate to keep Akinfeev, valued at £14m by United.

But Akinfeev wants to leave as CSKA are in danger of missing out on even a Europa League place.

The keeper currently represents himself in all negotiations, but is considering recruiting an agent after being stunned by CSKA's high valuation.

UNITED TO MAKE ROONEY LEAGUE'S BEST-PAID PLAYER

QUOTE
WAYNE ROONEY will become the highest-paid player in Premier League history and the face of Manchester United for the next decade.

United chiefs will offer him an astonishing £170,000-a-week contract when negotiations open next February.

And that will include a £45,000-a-week image rights deal to become Old Trafford's poster boy.

United have become increasingly aware of temptations from Spain for Rooney with Barcelona having put him top of their wanted list for the summer.

Rooney knows of Barca's interest and is intrigued by the prospect of lining up alongside the likes of Lionel Messi but still retains a huge loyalty to United.

The Old Trafford hierarchy plan to reward that loyalty with the most lucrative contract in the club's history.

Considerable work has already been done on the deal behind the scenes but no talks can take place until January when the ban on Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford is lifted.

The deal will include a a major image rights element which overshadows United's previous highest agreement with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo had an image rights agreement with the club, but that was affected when he launched his CR7 range.

Rooney, who is already contracted to United's shirt sponsor Nike, will be far easier to tie up.

There is an eagerness at United to seal an agreement before the World Cup where Rooney seems certain to emerge as one of the stars of the tournament - prompting an even greater demand from the biggest clubs around the world.

Evans keeping feet on ground

QUOTE
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans insists he has no intention of resting on his laurels as he bids to cement his place as a regular in Sir Alex Ferguson's first team.

The Northern Ireland international has made substancial strides this season as he has been relied on heavily in the absence of Rio Ferdinand through injury.

Evans, 21, impressed last term as he clocked up over 30 appearances in a campaign that saw United win the Premier League and Carling Cup.

While he looks to be more and more comfortable as a regular starter, Evans is also fully aware Ferguson is constantly looking for young players to improve and not be distracted by off-field activities.

He said: "It is very rare for him to say anything bad about his players. He always gives them 100 per cent backing. It is great to have that from a manager.

"You have to be on your toes as well as you cannot upset him. You have seen what he has done in the past. If you you are taking your eye off the ball, he will get rid of you.

"He treats everyone as men. Everyone has got to deal with certain situations but if you need to go to him, he is there for you. He just wants you to enjoy your football.

"I played over 30 games last season, which was more than I expected. It is great to get those games under your belt. But I know I still need to improve as there are some fantastic players here."

Giggs backing

Ryan Giggs, the most decorated player in United's history, is convinced Evans has a glittering future in the game.

"The performances he has put in, he looks as though he has played there 10 years," said the Welsh veteran.

"He has come into a team that has a centre-half partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

"If one of them is not playing and Jonny comes in, to say you don't miss one of those players, is a great compliment to him and it is true as well."

Reserve team coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not think Evans will get big-headed.

"He is a great lad who has come through the ranks and the system," said the former United striker.

"He realises that when you go into the first team you don't suddenly change your character. He knows where he comes from."

Van der Sar happy with progress

QUOTE
Edwin Van der Sar is relieved that Manchester United have avoided any complications in their UEFA Champions League group.

The same cannot be said for the likes of Liverpool, Inter Milan and Barcelona who find themselves with plenty to do before they can secure their place in the knockout stages with just two games to go.

Even AC Milan and Real Madrid are not yet assured of a place in the last-16 with Marseille breathing down their necks in Group C, while German giants and four-time winners Bayern Munich look certain to bow out.

However the Red Devils secured qualification with relative ease, aside from a slight hiccup in the 3-3 draw at home to CSKA Moscow. In the end the point was enough to see United through and Van der Sar admits they must now concentrate on finishing top.

"The other groups are crazy," he said.

"It used to the case that you always wanted to be first in your group but there are a couple this time where you know already that the runners-up would bring a difficult draw in February.

"The most important thing is to get the win tomorrow and see what happens later on."

Despite reaching the last two Champions League finals, Van der Sar admits that United do not possess a divine right to reach the final at the Bernabeu in May.

"It is not easy to get to the final," he added.

"There is a lot of quality around and we have lost some players, so just because you have reached two consecutive finals, it doesn't automatically mean you are going to get to a third. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

"But what we are doing now is all building to what we hope will be a nice end to the season.

"You don't win things early in the season. You have a path to go along, starting with the group phase. Everything is part of the big picture to win a trophy."

Young Reds to get their chance

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson is targeting top spot in Group B, but not at the expense of taking the opportunity to give European experience to some of his brightest young talents - with Darron Gibson set to be the main beneficiary.

Gibson is set for a rare starting spot in the centre of midfield, while Gabriel Obertan and Rafael are also almost certain starters when Besiktas visit Old Trafford on Wednesday. The Reds boss even refused to rule out starting Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda up front.

“I’ve not made my mind up about that yet,” said the boss. “Against Wolfsburg we’ll be playing some of the younger players. But what the formation and the team is on Wednesday we’ve not decided yet.

“Gibson will definitely play, and young Rafa as well. It’s a great challenge for these players. We’re also thinking of starting Gabriel Obertan to see how he does.

“And we’re looking at Ji-sung Park’s fitness because he’s back and has trained very well. We’ve put him on a programme that has brought him to his best level. He played for South Korea last week so he's ready for a game.”

Gibson is very highly rated at Carrington, although the 22-year-old Irishman has been limited to just one start all season. But Sir Alex is keen to push him on to the next stage - challenging regularly for a place in the Reds' engine room.

"He’s not had the amount of football that he'd wish for," said the boss. "I wish I'd been able to give him more games, but he has a lot of competition from Carrick, Anderson, Scholes, Fletcher, and Giggs if I choose to play him there.

"But, credit to Darron, he’s never let it unsettle him. His training performances have been excellent. Every session he comes in knowing that it’s worthwhile. He has a purpose about his training. For quite a few weeks we’ve been saying, you can’t hold a young one back. They tell you that themselves. And I think Darron is approaching that. He has become a very good, powerful midfield player."

For Sir Alex, Wednesday’s Champions League fixture is a balance between doing the job to win the group and an element of experimentation.

“This is a good fixture,” he said. “I can try one or two things. We did in the last game and we were far too open. But it ended up being a fantastic game.

"In the situation we’re in we could have an absolute non-event if we wanted to. But it’s not the way we want it. We want an exciting game and we'll do our best to challenge the younger players that will play.

“It’s difficult to say whether it’s more important to finish first or second in the group stages these days. But we will try to win it because that’s the best thing to do. You always want to finish first.

“We’ve analysed Besiktas and their form has been transformed in the last six matches. They’ve won them all, beating the top-of-the-league team Fenerbahce 3-0 on Saturday. So they’re in very good form and we will need to deal with that.”

Sir Alex Ferguson is aiming to lure Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik to Manchester United next summer with the Old Trafford futures of four key players still to be decided.

Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar have made a combined 2,210 senior appearances but all four are out of contract at the end of this season. While Giggs and Scholes are set to be offered one-year extensions in the new year, Neville, 34, faces an anxious wait.

Ferguson expects Van der Sar, 39, to reveal his intentions next month after previously floating the idea of retirement at the end of the season.

The United manager has played down the prospects of player recruitment in January, but the question marks over the long-term future of the quartet have prompted the Scot to identify rising talent that can be secured at acceptable prices.

Slovakia international Hamsik, rated at £25 million by Napoli, has been the subject of intensive scouting since the turn of the year and the 22 year-old has been credited as the driving force behind his country’s World Cup qualification.

Ferguson, who is set to turn to his young players in Wednesday’s Champions League Group B clash with Besiktas at Old Trafford, has also instructed his scouting network to monitor the progress of Palermo defender Simon Kjaer and Bolton centre-half Gary Cahill.

United spent a season assessing the qualities of Antonio Valencia last term before completing an £18m move for Wigan midfielder. Wolfsburg forward Edin Dzeko, who scored in the German champions’ 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford in September, has also been considered, but the Bosnian has spoken recently of wanting a summer move to AC Milan.

Having banked £80m from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid in June, Ferguson resisted the temptation to reinvest the windfall immediately, claiming that the transfer market had 'overheated’ with the huge spending of Real and Manchester City.

Even if Giggs and Scholes extend their careers into next season, they will go into the 2010-11 campaign ready to celebrate their 37th and 36th birthdays respectively.

Ferguson began planning for life without both men in 2007 by signing Nani and Anderson for a combined total just shy of £40m.

Nani’s limited progress has ground to a halt, while Brazilian midfielder Anderson continues to struggle to lay claim to a regular starting position.

Hamsik, a combative attacking midfielder, would be viewed as a player capable of filling Scholes’s goalscoring midfielder role, but Napoli are likely to demand a fee of £25m for a player whose value could escalate on the back of a successful World Cup.

Darron Gibson, the Republic of Ireland midfielder, is rated highly and Ferguson has confirmed that he will start against Besiktas. Teenage forwards Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda, both of whom are set to be involved at some stage, will also be given chances to shine.

Plans to open contract negotiations with Wayne Rooney in the new year underline United’s determination to safeguard their future, but replacing Van der Sar is proving a headache. Neither Ben Foster nor Tomasz Kuszczak has convinced when deputising for Van der Sar, although Ferguson expects Foster to emerge as the Dutchman’s long-term successor.

The emergence of Jonny Evans at centre-half has eased one worry for Ferguson surrounding the form of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, but the United manager is keen to bolster his defensive options.

United’s £700m debt, which necessitates annual interest repayments of £45m, has left the club reluctant to pursue top end players, leaving the way clear for Chelsea to close in on £40m Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero.
