Manchester United tracking Bordeaux hot shot Marouane Chamakh

QUOTE
Manchester United have run the rule over Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh.

The Morocco forward was courted by Sunderland, West Ham and Arsenal in the summer but failed to land his dream move to the Premier League.

However, his performances in France have now alerted United, who watched the 25-year-old in action against Lille on Sunday, where he won rave reviews despite Bordeaux’s 2-0 defeat.

Chamakh, whose contract expires next summer, is also interesting Chelsea and Everton.

Obertan eyes regular place

QUOTE
Gabriel Obertan has set his sights on winning a regular place in Manchester United's first team having impressed off the substitutes' bench in recent weeks.

The surprise £3million summer capture from Bordeaux arrived at Old Trafford in the summer largely unnoticed and was unable to partake in the early stages of the season due to injury.

While his welcome in Manchester was without fanfare, his manager Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of a quiet confidence that the winger would come good.

And if recent performances against CSKA Moscow and Chelsea on Sunday are anything to go by he may just be proved right.

Obertan was preferred to the ineffective Nani as a substitute at Stamford Bridge and there are those that feel the Frenchman has usurped his Portuguese team-mate in Ferguson's thinking as a potential long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

It is an opportunity Obertan is determined to grasp: "After four months of just waiting and resting, I've been really looking forward to starting my career as a Manchester United player.

"I wanted to feel part of the squad, part of the group, and be involved in the games. So I'm feeling really good right now.

"At first I just want to be part of the squad, be in the group that travels to all the games, and get a few minutes in each game to begin with."

He added in the Manchester Evening News: "Then, if I keep working hard and show what I can do, I have ambition. So, why not aim to be a regular in the team? I might need a year to achieve that, but I hope I can do it."

Soon it could be "step up or step aside" for Nani?

Fergie has blind date with Manchester United transfer target at awards dinner

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson has got up close and personal with one of Manchester United’s top transfer targets.

United boss Ferguson was sat at the next table to Palermo’s Danish defender Simon Kjaer at an awards ceremony in Copenhagen on Monday night.

Ferguson, there to present United legend Peter Schmeichel with an award on his induction into Denmark’s football Hall of Fame, was seen sharing small talk with the highly-rated Kjaer, who is on his transfer radar.

But Ferguson also paid tribute to ex-United keeper Schmeichel. He said: “Peter has given me many nightmares and sleepless nights but has also been a fantastic player, a great pro with big ambitions.”

Ferguson also saluted Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who won Denmark’s Player of the Year and Goal of the Year awards.

Ferguson added: “Nicklas Bendtner is part of the Arsenal team and has proven himself at highest level. It’s no surprise to me that he runs away with the prize.”

Manchester United continue keeper hunt by handing Michael Langer a trial

QUOTE
Manchester United are giving a trial to Austrian goalkeeper Michael Langer.

The 24-year-old is currently second-choice at German club Freiburg behind France goalkeeper Simon Pouplin but is still highly regarded. He is 6ft 5in and was formerly at Stuttgart.

United are weighing up their options because Tomasz Kuszczak is keen to move on and there are concerns over Ben Foster’s form.

United have scouted several keepers but anticipate Edwin van der Sar may yet sign another one year deal.

Evra’s a fizzy rascal

QUOTE
PATRICE EVRA has given up drinking Sprite - because the green label reminds him of World Cup foes Ireland!

The Manchester United defender has been getting all kinds of stick ahead of France's play-off games with the Republic.

And a can of fizzy drink finally made him go pop.

He revealed: "I've had the impression for days that certain people have been wearing green on purpose. Maybe that's just my imagination.

"But the other day I opened a can of Sprite, took a good look at it and decided I had to swap it for another drink.

"The moment I see anything green I think about the Republic of Ireland."  laugh.gif

Irish defender John O'Shea has wound up his United team-mate ahead of Saturday's first leg at Dublin's Croke Park and next Wednesday's return in Paris.

Left-back Evra added: "It would be a scandal if France don't qualify for the finals. This play-off is bigger than the three Champ-ions League finals I've played in.

"These last few days at United have been difficult. John O'Shea has promised me it will be hell at Croke Park. I have had the mickey taken out of me a lot.

"It's normal, as when England failed to make Euro 2008 I asked my English team-mates if they wanted a remote control to switch between games on TV.

"Now it's started once more. Darren Fletcher, who plays for Scotland, tells me we'll spend the summer together.

"The joking has to stop now. We have to qualify. It has become an obsession.

"I have never given such priority to the national team as I have done over the last few months."

Arsenal's French right-back Bacary Sagna is prepared for Saturday's Irish onslaught.

He said: "It'll be a crazy game. I expect them to run all over the pitch to give everything and in Paris too."

The rise and rise of Darren Fletcher

QUOTE
The football world’s eyes are at last wide open to what the boss knew all along – Darren Fletcher is pure gold. The 25-year-old’s emergence as one of English football’s finest engine-room controllers has surprised a few, but his displays have vindicated Sir Alex’s faith in him. We spoke to Fletch – proud father whose twin toddlers make his on-field challenges seem a doddle – about his hard-earned authority as a top-class midfielder...

A year ago you said you were playing your best football, but you’ve stepped it up yet another level since then…
I’m enjoying everything at the moment because the team is successful. Last season was great, despite the disappointment of the Champions League final. That low was partly because it was the last game as well, but if you look back on what we achieved right throughout the season it was fantastic. I played in a lot of big games and was given a consistent run in the side. The most important thing for me this season has been to kick on and not sit back and take my place for granted. At United you’re proving your worth in every game, there’s always someone who wants to take your shirt. That drives you on. I want to keep improving as a player, as I feel I have done in every season I’ve been here. You look at Giggsy, Scholesy and Gary Neville – as they’ve got older they’ve improved through their experience, knowledge, maturity and application of what they do off the pitch as much as on it.

The coaches have spoken of your determination to improve. Does the hard work you’ve shown to get where you are now bring added satisfaction?
This is a level that I’ve been striving to reach. The way I’m playing now, I’m the player I’ve always wanted to show people I could be. I’m not saying I’ve worked harder than anyone else, I’ve just tried to make sure I improve my game – and things have really paid off. Doing weights is a big thing for me now, whereas before it didn’t seem to have much effect. But just because you’re in the gym, that doesn’t make you a great player. It’s small percentages of improvement that help you become a better athlete and player. Becoming a father has really helped, too. Having two lads [twins Jack and Tyler] has matured me as a person, and that helps on the pitch as well.

What difference has having the boys made to you off the pitch and on it?
Having the boys has helped take my mind away from football, which is no bad thing. When I was younger I was intense and uptight about how well I was playing. I was constantly thinking about situations in games, what I could do better, or a bad performance would play on my mind. If you’re sitting at home with nothing else to do it’s easier to think about those things. Whereas now I go home to my children, who take up lots of my time, and it puts everything else into perspective. It gives you a great outlook on life. Now I know there’s a time to work and be focused on that. But I’ve also got my family, who are the biggest part of my life now. It allows me to relax much more, and because of that my game and outlook on everything is more balanced and more mature.

Mike Clegg [United’s strength and conditioning coach] says you’ve struck the perfect balance between football fitness and gym work. The only other person he’s seen do that is Cristiano Ronaldo. Quite a compliment...
Fitness has never been a problem, but in terms of strength and power my gym work has made a real difference. Striking the right balance is important. There’d be no point in bulking up if that was to the detriment of being able to get around the pitch, which is a big part of my game. I wanted to get to a level where I had strength, but also the stamina to keep going over 90 minutes. I’ve found a good balance, although I reckon I could still do a little more and put on more weight without affecting my fitness. There’s room for improvement but, like I said, I’m always looking to develop the little things. It’s not just the physical side – it’s a mental thing as well. I have more experience now, and simply being at this club improves you as a player; being in this team, around these great professionals. It’s been a gradual progression for me, but I’m really enjoying myself and I want that to continue for many more years to come.

When Ronaldo left in the summer, Sir Alex said it was a chance for other players to step up. Did you see it as your opportunity to stamp your mark on the team?
The players all knew we were losing a massive player, and a big gap in how and where we got our goals. We knew other players would have to rise to the challenge – we needed everyone to raise their game. Maybe there were times when we expected Ronaldo to come up with the goods, whereas now everyone knows we need to produce, individually or collectively. We’re a different team now, with a different style. Ronaldo was brilliant for us as much as we were brilliant for him, but now we have a new style and new players. We try to find the best way to win a match as a team. That’s United’s secret and a lot of the players have learnt that from Giggs, Scholes and Neville. There’s more than one way to win a match. We’ve shown already this season that we can win playing brilliant, attacking football. But sometimes it has to be ugly. They have the know-how to do it and the rest of us are learning. There will be times in games when we might not be on top, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to lose. That’s what makes this a good team, a championship-winning team.

Hargreaves excited by return

QUOTE
Owen Hargreaves concedes that he will be so excited when he eventually returns for Manchester United that he will probably pass out.

The midfielder has been sidelined for close to 14-months after undergoing surgery on both knees to try and cure an ongoing tendinitis problem.

Renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman operated on the England international in America and described the state of Hargreaves' knees as some of the worst he has ever seen.

The 28-year-old returned to training last month but suffered a slight calf strain last week. However the former Bayern Munich star has been pencilled in for the final two UEFA Champions League games at the end of November.

"It will be an amazing feeling to run out at Old Trafford again. I'll be so excited I'll probably pass out," he told the Daily Mirror.

"I just want to be part of it again, to be available and healthy. I can't wait to get involved.

"I want to be able to pull on the shirt and have an effect on games. I just want to compete in matches, work with the coaches to improve my game and become a better player.

"I want a good season to repay the faith shown in me by the United fans."

Invincible

Hargreaves admits that the last year has been difficult but is relieved to finally have the problem cleared up after suffering with the injury ever since his Bayern days.

"The last year has been difficult. As an athlete you think you are invincible," he added.

"You don't think something of this magnitude and seriousness will happen. I obviously had the problem when I came to Manchester United from Germany in 2007 and we tried to manage it.

"Nothing really seemed to work, despite being available for the big games at the end of the first season.

"I came back for the next season a week early to try to sort the problem out but it just didn't work. My last game was Chelsea away last season and I probably shouldn't have played.

"I struggled to drive my car for three days after that match. I knew something was very wrong."

Having put the failed comebacks behind him Hargreaves is now hoping he can emulate United team-mate Ryan Giggs and continue playing well into his mid-30s.

"The diagnosis was done to ensure I can come back to play for years to come. I'm 28 now and I'd like to play until I'm 34, or like Giggsy, who looks like he will still be going when he is 38," he pointed out.

Rooney hopes for new Man Utd deal

QUOTE
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has indicated he would like to spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford.

Barcelona are reportedly interested in Rooney but the 24-year-old England forward does not envisage leaving the club he joined from Everton in 2004.

"It is nice to be noticed but I am really happy at United," he said.

"I can't see myself leaving. I have two years left on my contract after this year and I'm sure we'll be negotiating a new deal in the next few months."

Rooney, who lives with his wife Coleen and recently-born baby Kai in Prestbury, added: "I love the place. It is 30 minutes from home and all my family, and I have got a great chance of winning trophies."

Since his arrival from Merseyside, Rooney has won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the Carling Cup and Fifa Club World Cup.

"Although I was an Everton fan, I loved watching United play," he said. "It probably started watching them from about 1994. Eric Cantona was brilliant in that team.

"He had something about him. You looked at him and he was so fearsome. And that was just on the television. Imagine playing up against him?

"They won a lot of trophies too. But it was more than just that. It was the way they played and attacked. The way they played right to the end. They scored all those last-minute goals, which showed their desire to want to keep going.

"Now, I am there and I have won trophies there myself. I just want to win more."

Meanwhile, Rooney insists he cannot be regarded as a truly great player unless he wins the World Cup.

He is set to play against Brazil, the world's top-ranked nation, for the first time when England take on Dunga's men in Doha on Saturday.

"There are players like George Best and (Cristiano) Ronaldo who are geniuses," said Rooney.

"But if you want to be compared to players like Romario and Ronaldo and be up there with them, I feel you have to win a World Cup.

"Ronaldo was one of the best, if not the best, forward ever. When he was at Barcelona, the things he did were incredible.

"In later years, Ronaldinho and Kaka were both world player of the year.

"For me to be considered among that group of players, I must win the World Cup with England."

whats wrong with this Wiley fellow? He got nothing better to do than wasting his time to fight for something that is like so long ago. or maybe... just maybe.. some *erm* payed him to do that
*
If you read the actual article, its not from Wiley himself:

QUOTE
Alan Leighton, national secretary for referees' union Prospect, said: "One of the things we are saying is, is there a case these comments are defamatory? I intend to talk to Alan Wiley to see if he wants to sue on the issue.

Red Devils linked with duo

QUOTE
Reports in France suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to bring in Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh and Marseille's Benoit Cheyrou.

The Manchester United manager was said to have been impressed with Chamakh's performances against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League in recent weeks - in which the striker scored in the 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena last week.

The 25-year-old was strongly linked with moves to Arsenal and West Ham in the summer but could now sign a new deal with Les Girondins in the coming weeks.

Cheyrou, younger brother of former Liverpool midfielder Bruno, was rumoured to have been watched by Red Devils scouts during last weekend's thrilling 5-5 draw at Lyon.

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder has a contract until 2013 but Marseille could look to cash in on the player to fund prospective targets in January.

Settled well

Meanwhile a Frenchman already at Old Trafford, Gabriel Obertan, admits he has had no problems settling into life at United.

"It has been easy to adapt, but being at the right level is another problem." he told L'Equipe.

"Playing 20 or 25 minutes in the Premier League is already difficult. Alex Ferguson is a normal man, very easy to get on with.

"On a mental level, I believe I have improved."

Vidic happy at United

QUOTE
Nemanja Vidic has rejected rumours linking him with a move away from Manchester United.

The Serbian's long-term future has been the subject of speculation in recent months, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan all credited with an interest in his services.

However, Vidic insists he is happy at Old Trafford and is focused on winning more silverware with United.

"I am happy at Manchester United and I am looking forward to winning more trophies and I don't think about leaving," Vidic told Sky Sports News.

Vidic is confident United can enjoy success this season, despite falling five points behind leaders Chelsea in the Premier League following last weekend's defeat at Stamford Bridge.

"Our mentality does not change after a few games, we know what we need to do this year," added Vidic.

"Definitely it will be hard, but I think we have a good squad, a big squad to do well this season."

Missing

Meanwhile, Vidic is confident they can cope without Sir Alex Ferguson during his touchline ban.

Ferguson was handed a two-match suspension for his disparaging comments about referee Alan Wiley's fitness after United's draw with Sunderland in October.

The United chief will be forced to sit in the stands for the games at home to Everton on 21st November and away at Portsmouth on 28th November, and Vidic admits the manager's input will be missed.

"It is always good of course to have the manager on the touchline because he needs to give advice to players, to change the team if he needs to and always that way we need him," added Vidic.

Youngster impresses United

QUOTE
Manchester United have asked Norwegian youngster Sondre Tronstad back for a second trial after he impressed recently.

The 14-year-old is thought to have performed well in front of Red Devils coaches and was asked back in February or March.

Tronstad admitted he was delighted to be spotted by United scouts despite the fact that he supports bitter rivals Liverpool.

Two other Norwegian youngsters Mads Daehli and Herman Stengel also went down for trials.

"They have said that it went well and that I should come back in February or March," Tronstad told fvn.no.

"It's a bit special to visit Manchester United since I am a Liverpool supporter. But I felt it was a good chance."

AC and Juve eye up Nani

QUOTE
JUVENTUS and AC Milan are set to battle it out for unhappy Manchester United ace Nani.

Both Italian giants are keeping tabs on the Portugal winger's situation after he launched a scathing attack on manager Alex Ferguson.

Nani, 22, claimed Fergie has mis-managed him.

Juve are keen on a January swoop and could even attempt a loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season for around £15million.

Boss Ciro Ferrara wants a winger who is versatile and can play on either flank.

Milan are looking at an end-of- season deal for Nani for around the same fee to replace England star David Beckham once his six-month loan from LA Galaxy expires.

Nani has so far failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford since moving from Sporting Lisbon in June 2007.

EXCLUSIVE: Fergie in for £20m Carlton - Manchester United to fight Liverpool for West Ham's Cole

QUOTE
Manchester United plan to make a £20million bid for West Ham’s Carlton Cole when the transfer window reopens in January.

Sir Alex Ferguson wants to add strength to a squad weakened by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez and has identified the England man as a replacement.

Nevertheless, a spokesman at Upton Park insisted last night that Cole is ‘not for sale’, and added: ‘We want to keep all our best players and the suggestion that we need to sell because of a financial crisis is not true.’

Cole has missed out on England’s friendly against Brazil in Qatar tonight because of injury but his development under Fabio Capello, as well as the progress he has made working with Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke at West Ham, has made him an attractive proposition.

Liverpool are also understood to be interested.

For Ferguson, though, Cole is someone who could play with Wayne Rooney and who offers something different — more of a physical presence — from the forwards he has at Old Trafford.

Ferguson has hardly touched the £80m United received for Ronaldo.

Vidic steps up comeback

QUOTE
Nemanja Vidic will be awarded another run-out for Serbia in midweek as he works his way back to full fitness.

The Manchester United centre-half has spent the past three weeks on the sidelines nursing a calf injury.

However, he came through 45 minutes of Serbia's 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland on Saturday unscathed.

He is now set to feature for his country again on Wednesday when Radomir Antic's men face South Korea.

United have given their blessing for Vidic to be used in that game, with Sir Alex Ferguson keen to welcome the 28-year-old back into the fold at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have made it clear that they do not expect their man to play the full 90 minutes, but Antic insists that is unlikely to happen.

"We arranged before the game (against Northern Ireland) Vidic would play one half," said the Serbia coach.

"He will also play on Wednesday. Everything is okay."

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12010_5695918,00.html

Phew, good to know it was arranged for Vida to play 45min only.

Edit: Carrick was injured though sweat.gif

QUOTE
Capello's squad had already been decimated by the absence of David James, Glen Johnson, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, David Beckham, Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott and Emile Heskey.

But he was forced to further reorganise when skipper John Terry lost his battle to recover from an Achilles problem and midfielder Michael Carrick was ruled out with an ankle injury. It meant Gareth Barry and Rooney were the only first-choice players in the starting XI, in contrast to Brazil who were virtually at full strength.

Berbatov back to fitness

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has confirmed he is back to fitness following a short lay-off with a knee injury.

Berbatov has missed United's last two matches after taking a knock to his knee during the 2-0 home win over Blackburn Rovers at the end of last month.

He sat out the 3-3 draw with CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Champions League and was also absent for the 1-0 defeat at Premier League leaders Chelsea before the international break.

However, the 28-year-old has now shaken off the problem and is expecting to play for Bulgaria in Wednesday's friendly against Malta.

"I received a kick in my knee during the Blackburn match and I needed some rest and some treatment, but I'm okay now and I'll play in Malta," Berbatov told reporters.

Providing Berbatov comes through the midweek fixture unscathed, he will be back in United's plans for Saturday's game at home to Everton.

Meanwhile, Berbatov is hoping to equal Hristo Bonev's record of 47 goals for Bulgaria in the friendly against Malta.

He added: "I'm thinking about it (the record), of course. I've scored many goals so far and I hope that with the help of my team-mates I'll do it."

Evans eyes loan switch

QUOTE
Skysports.com understands Manchester United starlet Corry Evans is hoping to secure a loan move away from the club to continue his development.

Evans, who is the younger brother of United defender Jonny, is regarded as one of the best young prospects at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old has been a regular in United's reserves and he was included in the first-team squad for the final Premier League game of the season at Hull City last term.

Evans, who is equally adept at centre-back or in midfield, made his international debut for Northern Ireland in the friendly with Italy in May and he is tipped to become a key performer in the senior side in future years.

A number of sides are believed to have sounded out the possibility of taking Evans on loan from United this season.

Evans is understood to be open to the idea of going out on loan to gain some valuable experience and Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to be willing to continue his policy of farming out his best young players, to aid their development and enhance their chances of breaking into the first-team at Old Trafford.

Seriously doubt it. He was already with us and loaned to Blackburn before Rafael starting to fight for the RB spot.

Evra relieved, Irish aggrieved

QUOTE
Joy for one United player in Paris inevitably meant agony for others as the World Cup qualifying campaign reached a dramatic climax on Wednesday night.

Patrice Evra and his fellow Frenchmen squeezed through to next summer's finals in South Africa, at the expense of Darron Gibson, John O'Shea and the Republic of Ireland, thanks to a controversial extra-time goal scored by Arsenal's William Gallas.

The creator of the decisive strike, Barcelona forward Thierry Henry, clearly handled the ball in the build-up but despite protests from virtually every Irish player, the strike was allowed to stand and the play-off ended 1-1 on the night, 2-1 on aggregate to France.

The extra period was forced by a surprise scoreline at the end of 90 minutes - 1-0 to the visitors, courtesy of Robbie Keane's first-half goal.

Evra played the full two hours; O'Shea also started the match and had a chance to double his team's lead two minutes after the break, only to half-volley over the bar. He was replaced by ex-United Reserves defender Paul McShane in the 66th minute after appearing to pick up a knock; Gibson entered the fray moments earlier as a sub for Glenn Whelan.

Nani's passage to the World Cup with Portugal was plain sailing by comparison with Evra's exertions. Carlos Queiroz's side won 1-0 away to Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2-0 on aggregate.

The other two European play-offs were won by Slovenia, who knocked out Russia on the away goals rule, and by Greece, 1-0 winners away to Ukraine.

Park Ji-sung tangles with Old Trafford team-mate Nemanja Vidic

Park Ji-Sung's South Korea saw their 27-match unbeaten run come to an end in West London as Serbia won this Wednesday's World Cup warm-up at Fulham's Craven Cottage.

Park's Manchester United team-mate Nemanja Vidic, who has been sidelined for three weeks with a calf injury, captained Serbia and played 70 minutes as Nikola Zigic's goal secured victory.

Park also got 70 minutes under his belt having been missing for United since October with a knee injury, while centre-half Vidic gave Sir Alex Ferguson a major boost by proving his fitness ahead of Saturday's Premier League meeting with Everton.

Malta 1-4 Bulgaria: Record-Breaking Dimitar Berbatov Strikes Twice

QUOTE
Malta were soundly beaten by Bulgaria in Rahal Gdid in a friendly on Wednesday night.

The Maltese were under pressure from the outset, and that they needed to wait five minutes to take the lead was something of a surprise.

Valeri Bojinov netted from close range after Stilian Petrov's through ball for that opener.

But with the Bulgarians looking complacent, Malta equalised right after the break as Michael Mifsud rolled back the years with a wonderful solo oal.

However, Valeri Domovchiyski then set up Berbatov for his first of the evening, and the hosts crumbled.

Blagoy Georgiev was next on the scoresheet with a direct free-kick and then Berbatov wrapped it up right at the death.

In doing so Dimitar made it 48 career goals for the Bulgarians - a new record, higher than Hristo Bonev's 47 and Hristo Stoichkov's 37.
