QUOTE(sHsIkuA @ Nov 13 2009, 10:59 AM)
Stumbled on this thread in United forum

We have an amazing midfield!
You guys wanna start talking about our midfielder here?

For me, I disagree with what this guy just said. I mean sure we have a one hell of a box to box midfielder, Fletch but we are still lacking a bit of the goal scoring threat when we are going forward.

- Anderson is improving, but I think he need to practice on his shooting ala Scholes
- Carrick is playing deep, doesn't do much and taking the rare shots once in a while, a great passer though when he's on form
- Obertan, still early but he's promising so far
- Nani... doh.gif need more teamwork and understanding. Skills and fancy move alone don't bring you anywhere (read: early Ronaldo)
- Valencia, great player so far. Still improving and definitely will be a threat if he has the confident to take the goal himself instead of passing the ball around. Also, never use his left leg but whatever, boring type of dribbling but as long as it works, who cares  tongue.gif
- Hargo, he was amazing before he's injured, hope he can be as good or better than he was...definitely looking forward for his return
- Park, another Fletch type of player and I really admire his work rate, not much of a goalscoring threat though.
- Giggsy / Scholesy, legend but they are way beyond their prime now. Great passer / team player but when it comes to goal scoring, not really a threat.
- and there's Tosic, Gibson, and other youngster that will step up some day

So far we are winning the game but Rooney / Berbatov needs to drop deep to helps and this in turn making our front empty. The opponent simply won't be scared since our scoring threat is dropping deep and with no threat from other midfielder or wingers, they simply won't hesitate to attack.

We do have an outstanding midfield(talking about the centre.. wings still in work in progress mode). Vs Chelsea. We dominated that area when everyone played down our chances against their diamond citing our lack of midfield talent to theirs. Yet it was the opposite in the game.

You know you don't need to be scoring to be considered great. Carrick-Scholes hardly scores in 06/07, yet they dominated the ball so much that it allows the others to play and do damage(scoring goals and whatnot). It's become a bit of a myth that our midfield is weak because they don't score goals. Look at Barca's midfield.. look at their stats. Hardly amazing.

Don't think Anderson will improve much on the shooting bit. He will get to around 5 or so, but not more. Just look at Carrick since his move here. He improved a little, but not more. That's just the way it is and we have to accept that. I've always maintained that for goals we must look at the wingers for the bulk of it from midfield. And I've always said that those goal scoring midfielders all play in advance positions(wingers, behind the striker or part of a 3 CM setup). It's like what Ronaldo did last two seasons.. no defensive responsibility, which our CMs must peform each game since we don't have anyone else to cover them like the others. Lampard play in that diamond, Gerrard plays behind Torres, Fabregas have two players next/behind him doing all the work.. go find a player that is scoring goal consistently playing in the centre of a 442, and then tell SAF about it. We play 442 most of the time which means our CMs are a bit restricted in that respect and we have no place for an AM.

We do have a very good midfield.
Fletcher-Carrick-Ando(any of those two in 442)
Giggs, Scholes, Hargreaves as back up.

It's the wings which is a bit problematic since we're waiting for Nani to grow up, but unfortunately it hasn't happen yet. Giggs have been very good playing there this season, and hopefully Obertan play like he does in his cameos most of the time.. that will help us greatly. Valencia have been steady progressing.. I like what I've seen from him so far.. and he look pretty good against Chelsea the other day. Hoping for a better performances in this area after new year.. with Valencia settling in, Obertan becoming another regular piece there and somehow Nani finding a functional brain.

QUOTE(O-haiyo @ Nov 13 2009, 11:16 AM)
No Wan. I think it's wrong for him to do that (if he really said that), even he is just commenting on how SAF deal with things. I think what happened in the room, stays in the room. It is very unproffesional for him to say that. Ya, we all more or less know how SAF works, but why want to tell it to the media?

I really don't like the way Nani handled the question.
*
He doesn't criticise SAF for it, nor does he shed any light or something controversial behind the scenes. He just said that SAF can be kind when it's good, but also can be hard on you if you're not doing your job properly, which is true. And he's not the first player to have said that.

Added on November 13, 2009, 11:44 amHaving read the full quotes(only read bits of it before), I sympathise with him on not getting regular run in the side to build his form, but he's wrong if he expects to start the important games. If your not in form, you don't play.. simple as. It's a bit of a problem with the big squad we have nowadays. On one hand you have to think what's best for the team, but on the other hand we have the players form to think about.. which one would we sacrifice?

United get fewer penalties than Arsenal and Liverpool, and score fewer than Chelsea
August 23, 2009
QUOTE
There's a fantastic statistical snippet in today's Sunday Times, showing the number of Premier League penalties that top sides have been awarded over the past ten years, and how successful they are at converting them.  Here are the stats for the "top four":

    Manchester United

Penalty success rate since 1999-2000 season: 78.3%
    Penalties awarded: 46
    Penalties scored: 36

    Liverpool

    Penalty success rate: 75.5%
    Penalties awarded: 53
    Penalties scored: 40

    Chelsea

    Penalty success rate: 94.9%
    Penalties awarded: 39
    Penalties scored: 37

    Arsenal

    Penalty success rate: 81.8%
    Penalties awarded: 55
    Penalties scored: 45

So we've been awarded fewer penalties than both Liverpool and Arsenal, but no-one comes close to Chelsea's daunting 94.9% success rate.

LoL.

Anyway you get the idea. Berba and Wazza is not enough. We need another 2 quality strikers.
*
Berba, Rooney, Owen + Welbeck, Macheda and King. I say we're strong enough there. Not perfect, but if it is perfect, we would have another Tevez situation and it wouldn't be good for the youngsters as well who has shown plenty of promise.

--

As for Mourinho, I'm not so sure. His personality etc fits the criteria. But I still don't like his tactics and stuff. But apart from him, I don't know who else is suitable for the job. I hope that day never comes. Blanc is doing pretty well right now. Maybe there is a reason why Obertan came our way so cheaply.. brows.gif

He did well with what he had to do, apart from one clearance.. although the pass back to him was like a bullet from close range.

Finally able to spam here! Only able to connect for one hour(yesterday somehow work, for a while) since Wednesday afternoon when streamyx went down!

I want to see Obertan. Let him shine.. put some oil on his head first though.
And can I laugh again. biggrin.gif Excellent result, although the if the 'home' team lose it would have been far better for entertainment purposes.

Great move by Tevez. Complained he didn't play the big games with us and join City, only having to end up as backups to Bellamy and Adebayor.

Hopefully Rafael can support Valencia.. looking forward to it. Look pretty good against CSKA in the last 15mins or so when Valencia came inside dragging the defenders with him leaving Gary with acres of space to cross the ball.

SAF always rest those that just came back from internationals. Berba didn't get on the bench too.

Gary-Rio-Evans-O'Shea. All out. That's a class defence lineup, yet we still kept a clean sheet. biggrin.gif

Vidic committed to United
Influential defender rejects talk of leaving Old Trafford
QUOTE
Last updated: 26th November 2009

Nemanja Vidic has rubbished talk that has suggested he could be ready to quit Manchester United as his wife has not settled in England.

Barcelona and AC Milan are thought to be monitoring the situation having previously been linked with the 28-year-old.

Vidic's Old Trafford future has been called into question with speculation again mounting that his wife, Ana, is unhappy in the North West, particularly with the climate.

The classy centre-half has previously intimated to foreign journalists that he would like to play his football in a sunnier country at some stage in his career.

However, Vidic appears to have had a major change of heart. And instead of looking for an escape route, he wants to become an integral part of the team that must be built once the likes of Ryan Giggs and Edwin van der Sar call time on their careers.

"I am glad to have been part of this club for so many years and if I could be one of the bases on which a new team is built I would be very happy," he said.

"I have never said I want to go and play in another country. Other people have spoken or written about it and I am not happy with that.

"But I have said in the past what I think. I don't want to keep talking about it because I can't stop what people say. The fact is I am happy here."
Contract talks

It has been suggested Vidic's advisors have been happy to let rumours about the interest from Barcelona in particular rumble on because it would bring forward talks on a new contact.

The Serbian's present deal expires in 2012, so the likelihood is United would want to open negotiations towards the end of this season to avoid the potential for Vidic - who cost £7.2million when he moved from Spartak Moscow on Christmas Day 2005 - leaving at a knock-down price.

Again, though, this is a theory rejected by the Serbian.

"I don't want to rush and I don't want to speak about my future in the media," he said.

"I will speak about it to the club. But I don't want to push them. I don't want to push anyone.

"We will see what happens. I am here and I am happy. I have shown in the games that I want to be part of the team and to play every game 100 per cent for this club."

Obertan - I'm no Ronaldo
United winger keen to play down comparisons
QUOTE
Last updated: 26th November 2009

Gabriel Obertan is adamant he is not Cristiano Ronaldo's replacement, but admits he would like the right-wing spot at Manchester United vacated by the Portuguese star.

While Ronaldo's move to Real Madrid dominated the back pages all summer, Obertan was ushered into Old Trafford with the minimum of fuss.

His first few months in Manchester were hampered by injury but he has shown glimpses of real talent in recent weeks in a smattering of appearances for United's first team.

The France Under 21 international was handed his first UEFA Champions League start by Sir Alex Ferguson on Wednesday night and was one of the few United players to emerge with any credit from the 1-0 defeat to Besiktas.

It was something of a throwback to Ronaldo's early days as Obertan hinted at some of the tricks he has in his locker.
Work to be done

Yet the £3million summer arrival from Bordeaux has no wish to be bracketed in the same company as Ronaldo.

"I am not Ronaldo's successor," stated Obertan.

"For now there is no comparison, I am just trying to be Gabriel Obertan.

"I have only been here for six months and I cannot do what he did in that time."

Obertan admits he has a long way to go before he is the finished product and can be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Ronaldo.

"I want to do more," he said. "I have not scored yet and I have not made an assist.

"I have put in some good performances but they have only been short appearances when I came on as a substitute.

"I want to do more than that and I think I could. That is what I am wishing for.

"If I get another chance, I know I will take it."
