does anyone know how much is the ferry fare from penang n how often is the trip?

thanks
*
It is RM35 one way from PPC and if I am not mistaken if you buy to and fro ticket it is RM60. It leaves for Langkawi at 8.00 am and leaves Langkawi and back to Penang at 5.00 or 6.00 pm daily. It was meant for day trippers from Penang but sadly many Langkawians wants to do day trips to Penang as well but unable to as they did not have a same departure time the other way round. smile.gif

Hello Langkawi sifus!

Will be travelling on a budget on 28 - 31 August.

Thinking of either:
a) Eagle Bay Hotel
b) Seaview Hotel
c) Langkasuka Hotel (the one in Kuah, next to Teow Soon Huat or Langkawi Parade)
All are in Kuah and about the same price.

Need advice on which hotel is better? Facilities, location, which one newer or nicer environment? Anyone stay there before?

Or anyone got suggestion on good budget hotel in Kuah?

Thank you!  notworthy.gif
*
I think you should skip Seaview Hotel as the location is out of place (it is in Jalan Penarak). Both Langkasuka and Seaview are owned by Teow Soon Huat so Langkasuka Hotel is a better choice since it is walking distance to Langkawi Mall where a few duty free shops like Zeno, Idaman Suri are located. WanThai ( very nice Thai Malay restaurant is also located here).

Since budget is the main concerned, Baron Hotel is even nearer to the shopping areas and also the pasar malam. smile.gif

juz paid a deposit for a 3d2n package at Matta fair jb..rm319 for 2 person include cable car tix and 3day car rental (wira) and stay at chalet..izit cheap?
*
Price is about standard, not much cheaper really. Even if you venture yourself the price might be even cheaper if it is a low season but high season your price is definately cheaper. You didn't mention which chalet though.

Advantage is, you save time as it is prearranged instead of wasting time looking into this room and that room, looking for the elusive cheaper chalets, ha,ha,ha. biggrin.gif So more time for jalan jalan but then again it is alos an adventure going around unplanned as I always do.

i have 8 fishing members going to fishing this coming november in langkawi. thinking to:

-rent an apartment to fit 8 people for 3d2n
-rent a car that can fit 8 people for 3d2n

how much is it to rent an apartment (not those fancy apartment but just ok ok apartment) for 8 people there and what type of transportation will be given for 8 people to fit in a car? i think its probably a van right?
*
smile.gif Wah! I envy all 8 smile.gif of you. You can actually check in lelong.com where I have seen smile.gif an ad smile.gif for Lagenda apartments wwhich I think can fit your requirements nicely. It's nott expensive and for van rentals, there are many over there, no worries. I think the drive will take approximately 4 to 6 hours depending on your driving speed.

You don't have to drive all the way till K.Perlis. Alor Setar will do. After the first toll, go straight at the traffic lights and lookout for Kuala Kedah junction. Also check my earlier treads for fishing info in Langkawi. First boat to Langkawi normally starts at 7.30am. biggrin.gif

hi..i need some info here because i am planning to go at the end of the mth..will b there for 3D2N
i hv nvr been there, sorry if i ask too many questions...

1. where is the location shd i stay? Cenang, tengah or kuah?
The hotel you mention, only one venue is there, Pantai Tengah. Holiday Villa. Where you stay is OK because normally you will rent a car. If you want a beach hotel, then Kuah is out of the puzzle but if beach is not a criteria then Kuah's Bayview is good.

2. which hotel is good at there(based on Q1) in term of services, hygiene, environment etc? i will be going with another 2frens,so total 3. budget below 300pernite /per person
The hotel you mention is both equally good except Langkawi Lagoon is nicer and they have sea chalets, meaning the chalets are built over the sea like Avillion in PD. Bayview in Kuah is a 4 star establishments and also cheap.

3. how far is the driving distance btw cenang, tengah and kuah?
Tengah is just beside Cenang but Kuah is quite a distance (20 to 30 minutes drive) from both the others.

4. if we drive there, how much the cost for 2ways including petrol + tolls? or is it better to go by AA?
Let's see, KL to Ipoh is RM23.00, Ipoh to Penang is RM18.00 and Penang to Alor Setar is RM10.00, to and fro the toll is about RM100.00 (just an estimate, I am not sure now) and the petrol is normally one and a quarter tankful for one way so to and fro is about two and half tankful. If you want to consider the wear and tear and tyres, it is even more , ha,ha,ha tongue.gif

5. anything i miss out? wat other thing i should kno before go there?
The first ferry is morning around 7.00am and the last is about 7.00pm, so time your arrival to K.Kedah accordingly.

thanks a lot first..sorry again for asking so many Q..hope you all can help me smile.gif

thanks for the fruitful info..

now i am still deciding whether to stay at langkawi lagoon resort or holiday villa...
i guess i will go by flight, hopefully wont make a wrong choice...
if i do have any Q, i will let u kno...thanks again
but 3 of us prefer the hotel stated on above... smile.gif but is it awana rly good?
*
I think Holiday Villa has better beaches and nearer to the actions in Pantai Cenang and Langkawi Lagoon although new and nice rooms, it is situated near Kuala Triang which is a small fishing village and it is situated beside a river mouth (Sungai Melaka) which is actually quite muddy although it is compensated with a nice swimming pool. Best bet is still Holiday Villa and Awana Porto Malai is also another hotel without a beach but with a nice boardwalk beside a boating marina.

Have a nice holiday! tongue.gif

etigge....u knows some good spot for deep bottom sea fishing? like an area/spot which the chances of getting a decent size garupa 1kg+- and etc. do i need to instruct the boat man to go far far way from the langkawi island to get some decent catch like 20km? or with in 10km from the langkawi island will get some good catch? im thinking to try my luck to get garupa, pari and may be parrot fish
*
Years has gone by and the catch in Langkawi is dwindling. Local anglers is going further and further away from the shores for better catch. For deep sea fishing there is a sunken wreck 10 nautical miles South of Pulau Singa. You must also time your fishing dates with 'air mati' when the current is the weakest.

The only person I know that can will do these charters is Pak Hassan in Kuala Triang. You can look for him by contacting Pak Deris in Alu Alu Fishing in Kuah (I don't know if they are still operating) or you can contact the bell counter in Sheraton Beach Hotel.

I kg. garoupa is quite common in Langkawi and those that are fished at the sunken wreck is about 8 kg. and above is you get the right tide.

This one is caught a few kilometres off Pulau Timun. Then again, there are no guarantees in fishing! tongue.gif

would like to ask for those who are currently living or working in langkawi:

1) do langkawi have any facilities of language course such as french, japanese or spanish.

2)is langkawi have any music center which can learn instrument (violin)
*
biggrin.gif In Langkawi Mall (not to mistaken with Langkawi Fair) there is one language center that gives language tuition. I can't recall the shop's address but it is adjacent to an Indian restaurant beside Vision Travel and a clinic. The street is called Persiaran Bunga Raya and at the other end of the street from Kamdar and Affin Bank. The language center is located on the first floor of the shop with rough pebbles on the corridor . (It is an end lot and used to be a pub, I think it still is).

My daughter used to take French lessons there but the quality of the tuition is so so only. The tutor is Patrick and he used to be a DJ on the local Langkawi FM channel. Good Luck! tongue.gif

As for music center, there's one on the main road to the airport from Kuah. From Kuah , on the way look to the right. After about 2 kilometers from Teoh Soon Huat, look to the left and try to locate Singapore Cake House. The music teacher is also the owner of the cake house. I know she teaches piano but violin, my guess is NO! If you can't locate the cake house, the cake house also have a branch in Pandak Mayah area. The corner shop along TM PLaza.

Hi there,

I'll be going to langkawi this coming October 23-25.

But I'm bringing my wife n 1yr 6months kid there.

Does this 3D2N itinerary from pg.1 suits me?

Flight time is also the same.

DAY1 (upper langkawi)
0930am - arrive at airport
1100am - arrive at kuah, check-in, rent car
1130am - galeria perdana, air hangat village
OK!
0100pm - lunch
0200pm - temurun waterfall, langkawi waterfall, pasir tengkorak beach
I think you should skip this and look for alternative sites to visit. Since you are going to Seven Wells, Temurun is always devoid of water and full of rocks. Pasir Tengkorak Beach is not really nice, might as well go to the beach near Burau Bay ( Oh! you are going there anyway, Pantai Kok) near Telaga Harbor Park. The way you plan your itinery, you are going to be very tired when you come back from holiday!  blush.gif
0600pm - craft and cultural complex, black sand beach
OK!
0700pm - tanjung rhu beach, dinner
Are there any good dining places there? I don't recall any! Might as well dine in Kuah since you are heading there afterwards.0830pm - back to kuah, hang around town

DAY2 (middle langkawi)
0900am - oriental village, cable car up mat cincang
Good choice!
1230pm - seven wells waterfall, lunch
Good choice but beware of monkeys and don't let kids carry food or fruit.
0300pm - summer palace, pantai kok, telaga harbor, the loaf
Summer Palace is rotting away but visit it anyway. hehe.
0500pm - laman padi, pantai tengah
OK!
0700pm - pantai cenang, dinner
Don't eat the roti bom there or you will get slaughtered, hehe. Tomato Restaurant is recommended by a lot of other forummers.
0830pm - back to kuah, hang around town

DAY3 (lower langkawi)
0900am - isle hopping package (beras basah, singa besar, dayang bunting)
Good choice!
0230pm - eagle square, lagenda park, buy chocolates/souvenirs
Good choice!
0400pm - check-out, return car, depart to airport
0530pm - fly home!

etigge...thats some nice catch! when was the picture taken? lets say 1-2km out from any of the small island down south of langkawi like pulau singa, pulau balar...could we get some decent garupa 1kg+-? im not aiming for those 8kg++ garupa but just 1kg+- and if get 2kg i'll be laughing until my teeth fall off already!

so is 1 - 2km away from any of the small island bottom fishing any good?

what bait do we use to get garupa's attention better? live squid?, prawn, or kembong fish?

another thing is trolling...i will be doing trolling too...2km away from langkawi islang can get baracuda bits or must go further away for more chances?
*
biggrin.gif Maybe you can charter a boat to Pulau Cepu which is just off the southern tip of Pulau Singa. Personally the only fish I get here is 'ikan gerut' but I did dive there once and I see a lot of groupers there, big ones. I never hooked them though. In Langkawi, anglers goes out on Thursday nights and nets for live squids the whole night and some light fishing while doing that. Only in the morning, do they go out to fishing spots to do fishing.

As for trolling, Langkawi has plenty of barraccudas. You can charter a boat and head for a place called 'hujung buluh' and the islands around there are full of barracudas. Only thing is barracudas are successfully trolled on 'air besar' days and fishing is better on 'air mati' days. Most boatmans knows 'hujung buluh' which is also the spot for squid catching.

Happy fishing.

how many days we have to stay in langkawi in order to buy those duty free and take them back to main land via ferry? 3d2n enough?
*
biggrin.gif 48 hours ! It is shortened to 48 hours to be eligible to enjoy 1 litre of liquor and 200 sticks of cigarettes and also RM500 worth of duty free items like pots, pans etc. It used to be 72 hours but after appealed by the locals the Customs decided to shorten it. It also applies to Pulau Tioman as well. Just remember to keep your ferry ticket stubs. Even more safer, have it chop and sign at the Customs counter when you arrived showing your Mycard!

is it a good idea if i request or rent a taxi for whole day instead of i rent a car n drive myself all around langkawi area? and how much it will cost? is it worth?
*
It depends on you actually! If you don't feel like driving and looking at maps, you can relax and let the taxi driver show you around and also not wasting time looking for the right direction. If you want to be adventurous and explore, renting a car might be the fun part of it.

If you take a taxi, you can actually chat with a local and he can recommend places where you can visit and also the best spots to eat etc. It's up to you. The rest of the tours are usually sea bound like Pulau Payar, island hopping. The taxi might cost a little bit more though.

Cheers and enjoy! rclxms.gif

smile.gif There is a service in the morning (if the time is not changed, it's 8.00am departing from PPC) and returning at 5.00 pm departing Langkawi Jetty Point. The fare is RM35.00 one way and RM60.00 if you buy both ways. I don't know if they increase their fare but you can buy the tickets in advance from the counter beside Fort Cornwallis at PPC building.

tongue.gif That place is not very well maintained and now in a dilapidated state. It is nearTelaga Harbor Park in Pantai Kok. At the junction near the beach, the right goes to Berjaya and Burau Bay, take the left and it is only 100 metres after the turn on the right. Look for some old looking wooden structures.

PS. It was made for a set in a scene from a movie so it was never meant to be permanent. whistling.gif

smile.gif Actually the issue of jelly fish is overblown! I an a scuba diver and have dived around the islands, Pulau Singa, Pulau Tepur, Pulau Segantang, Pulau Chepu etc. The only jelly fish I meet are those not dangerous ones. You have to look out for the Portugese Man-Of-War where their tentacles are very long but rare in these parts. These are the ones that killed a kid a few years ago. It happened in Pantai Tengah and the first aid given was bad and the hospital staff was slow!

Still, just be careful.

Hi! I need some help/suggestions here. My mom and I are going for a trip to Langkawi this coming Dec (this is the 1st time my mom and I traveling together, so it is really a big deal  wub.gif  ) We are going to book a hotel at Bella Vista Langkawi (because of the price, the beach and the location.. I think). Can anybody tell me whether it is better  to rent a car for the 4 D3N experience or just hail a cab from place to place (in term of $$ and convenience) coz from what I read, the hotel is in Kuah Town which has lotsa cab driving pass the hotel (right?)
And can you guys suggest the must see places that we might really have to see (Island hopping, scuba diving, snorkelling etc are out of the questions .. my mum is turning 63 this year  flex.gif  ) and any other recommendations / suggestions about anything are highly appreciate too.

Thanks in advance notworthy.gif

blush.gif Hotel Bella Vista (used to be called Tiara Hotel) has no beach and it is hard to get a taxi there as the location is off the main road. You have to take a turn into a small road off the main road to get to the hotel although it is visible from the main road. The rates are cheap, yes but it is one of the most unpopular hotel in Langkawi. During LIMA they are the one that still have rooms after all are full!

My recommendation is City Bayview if it is in Kuah. The rates are only RM140 per night. Quite a bargain for a four star hotel. If that is still too high, there are Baron Hotel, Citin Hotel and also Condo Istana. Just some pointers! smile.gif

Thanks for the info ettige Will consider trying one of those hotels mentioned. (maybe will ask uncle Google first  rolleyes.gif )

Here is the official site for Bella Vista : http://www.bellavista-langkawi.com/accommodations.php

"Stunning views, coupled with an orchestra of soft waves rushing to meet the shore, soothes the mind and helps relieve the body of tension. But the hotel doesn’t leave anything to chance and has furnished its 228 luxurious guestrooms with modern amenities for those relaxing moments. After all, these moments are what great holidays, family vacations, and romantic getaways are made of."

-A quote from their website.. The very FIRST line actually. Are they trying to mislead potential guest by saying this?  doh.gif  Or are they simply suggesting the beaches are in view but not in their property?  rclxub.gif
*
Bella Vista was built on reclaimed land and they filled the sea with soil rather than sand , imagine the silt and mud. The tiny, puny beach is just a patch of the seaside filled with a few lorry loads of sand to cover the mud. The first management was a failure until they were taken over by Danaharta.

Landmark (The Datai and Andaman) was supposed to manage the hotel but due to a dispute between the owners and management (the owners forbids the sale of liquor but the mangement insists on them). Finally Landmarks gave up even after they bought a plot of land beside it. The owner, Syed something then operated the Hotel himself.

Again that was many years ago but maybe the mangement is better now but I am sure there is no beach, at least no natural beach. Other multi starred hotel in Kuah is the Westin (formerly Sheraton, not be be mistaken with Sheraton Beach).

Langkawi - Jellyfish

Mark: 1 Sept 2010 / By SEREAN LAU -The Star

" LANGKAWI: Improper dumping of sewage and the disappearance of turtles has caused an explosion in the jellyfish population which is threatening tourism here. In the first 21 days of July alone, 185 cases of jellyfish attacks on tourists and residents including fishermen were recorded and this is becoming a cause of concern to the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada)."

Hey... need soem suggestions to those who have been to langkawi before.
My frens and i plannin go for 3d2nights trip. But we undecided about the packages offered by the hotel.
I think maximum we can only choose 2 packages because no time. But there are four packages
1) langkawi day discovery - main thin is the cable car thingy
2) island hopping
3) mangrove swamp
4) snorkel at pulau payar

Reading all the descriptions made us quite undecided so i just want to ask any fellow lyn members to give suggestions. Is island hopping nice? because my fren's father didn't suggest us to go for it.

EDIT: oh yea... will be staying at hotel bahagia. don't know where is it in pulau langkawi. should rent a car or not?
*
smile.gif Hotel Bahagia is right smack in town near Kamdar. Further down is Restoran Wan Thai which I have always recommended to Muslim forummers. It is just beside Affin Bank and near the duty free shopping but a better shopping area is still Pandak Mayah area.

Mangrove tours is a must to enjoy nature at it's best and island hopping is a must if Tasik Dayang Bunting is interesting to you. Cable car is also something most won't miss and Pulau Payar if you really like snorkelling or diving. I think you can give P.PAyar a miss. It is not so nice anymore, the corals are bleached and the ferry trip agonising! To suffer for beautiful corals and clear waters is OK but then now conditions in P.Payar is bad. The other 3 , I think it is a must! Try to fit in all.

You can rent a car and do one of it on your own. I am sure there are free time. hmm.gif

when u order seafood, you can pick it yourself... they have a vast selection when u enter the restaraunt...
overall experience for orkid ria was excellent... price is abit high but worth it.. nice ambience, good service, good food..
rootian.. not too sure where is that tho biggrin.gif

one place i will not recommend is sawadee... along pantai cenang, nearer to the junction to hotel aseania... the food tastes bad and price paid is not justified for the poor service and the food.

Also don't forget Orchid in Kuah and also Yu Loong also in the same area. biggrin.gif Nice seafood and price not too bad.

just want a relaxing and quiet holiday...

can anyone recommend any beach that are quiet and relax plus a place to stay that right smack infront of the beach.... thanks

So many are smack in front of the beach. You going at the busiest time of the year!Better book early if they are not already booked. You didn't mention budget but the best will be The Datai,The Andaman.Four Seasons(where Shah Rukh Khan did shooting in Don) Nice beach and villa isn't it?

Then comes Berjaya Beach and Mutiara Burau Bay.Going further down Pelangi,Holiday Villa,Federal Lodge,Langkawi Lagoon(this ones has chalets over the sea like Avillon in PD) and also Westin which is in town near the Jetty.

Others are the non star motels like Malibest, Charlie's place,AB Motel,Langkapuri etc.etc.Check them through Langkawi Gazette.com. biggrin.gif
