--REMINDER--
It's great that you all are willing to share your experience & info here with us. However, please kindly don't provide false info before checking the true and up-to-date info from reliable source. It would be better if official links or source of info to be posted as well to avoid confusing our fellow forumers who are doing their trip-planning. Many thanks!

Rickshaw Sightseeing Bus
For those who are planning a trip to Hong Kong, you may consider taking this Ricksaw Sightseeing Bus to travel around main tourist spots on Hong Kong Island.

You are recommended to get the 1-Day Pass with HK$50 if you're going to explore the Hong Kong Island for a whole day. With this pass, you can hop on and off the bus at any time. But you're advised to plan visiting time for each spot 'coz the bus runs every 30mins. Plan ahead so you won't waste time on waiting the next bus. icon_idea.gif

all avid travellers... need abit of advise.

due to limited time (yea, manage to squeeze in alot of places) and so not to tax myself too much this time, im thinking of just going to either Stanley Market/Waterfront or Repulse Bay.

Considering i'm more into scenery/sightseeing, and probably abit of shopping, which would you recommend i go? As for timing wise, most probably will try to go (to either place) around 4pm.

last but not least, anyone currently in HK can confirm what time the sun sets in HK this time around (Nov)? from some website, it says 5.45pm. Is it that early? Planning to enjoy sunset in HK.  wink.gif

Added on November 5, 2009, 1:21 pm
northasian or any sifus... understand that there is construction work currently ongoing @ Ngong Ping.  is the Po Lin Monastery, Wisdom Path and Tian Tan buddha still accessible?  Is it still worthy going there?
*
Hi w00lvie,

For scenery, Repulse Bay will be better, but there isn't much thing to see indeed. If you would like to have a bit shopping as well, I think Stanley is a better choice! Though you shouldn't expect there is a lot of thing to buy in the flea market there, 'coz most items are tourist-oriented, like Chinese handcraft, HK t-shirts...etc. But it's nice to have a tea/coffee break at one of the alfresco cafes along the main street there/or those restaurants in the Murray House.

Yes, sunset is really around 5:45pm in this season. It will get even earlier as time closer to Dec, 'coz Day time is shorter in Winter.

I can't find any notice about closure of Giant Buddha & Wisdom Path from NP360 website, but last time when I visited Ngong Ping & Po Lin Monastery in Feb this year, there was some construction work but all the attractions were still accessible. If you like scenery & sightseeing, this place is somewhere you MUST NOT MISS!!

thanks moody5.  if all goes well, i should be coming back from Cheung Chau, hence should be at Central pier... which has buses going to both Stanley and Repulse.  but due to time limitation, can only pick one.  sad.gif

northasian... thanks for your suggestion.  will make final decision when time comes... Repulse Bay or Stanley Market/Waterfront.  tongue.gif

and thanks for confirming the sunset time in HK this time around.  guess i will have to work (or rather walk) fast if i wanna catch sunset @ Golden Bauhinia sq.  tongue.gif

actually i've been to NP, but wanna go again this time... especially to try the new Crystal cabin cable car.  biggrin.gif so i guess i will just go ahead and plan for NP, Big Buddha & Wisdom Path, and cross my finger that it is still accessible.  biggrin.gif
*
Wow you wanna cover Cheung Chau + Stanley + Sunset at Golden Bauhinia Square? That's quite rush indeed... Unless you are like "touch'n go" type of tourist.. Actually travelling should be a kind of relaxation, shouldn't push yourself too much... My suggestion is, watching sunset at Stanley or somewhere else in any day during your trip would be fine too.. Say, maybe you can arrange another day to match the sunset time when you're walking along the Tsim Sha Tsui Harbourfront/Ocean Terminal, or taking ferry to/from Central & Tsim Sha Tsui...etc. Viewing from Tsim Sha Tsui or the ferry is nice too, I love the view from the ferry smile.gif

Hi northasian,

Can you pls enlighten me, what's the name of the island that is with 3 big chimneys?  Is it Lamma Island?

I chanced upon a very nice sunset at The Peak Galleria, at Victoria Peak, with a reservoir(? Pok Fu Lam reservoir) in the foreground and further away, there's this island with 3 chimneys...

Ami

Hi Ami,

Yes you're right, the island with 3 chimneys is Lamma Island and the reservoir you overlooked from the Peak is Pok Fu Lam Reservoir~

thanks for your suggestion... and very sorry for making you confused.  actually my trip to Cheung Chau is on separate day then the day i'm planning to catch the sunset @ Golden Bauhinia Sq.  when i say 'i need to walk fast...', i actually mean that the day time is very short... thats why need to 'walk' fast.  smile.gif

will also take your heed of catching the sunset from the ferry - this one need very good timing i guess.  tongue.gif
*
oooicic~~! Not your fault la, no need to say sorry, haha..
Day time is shorter but not too short, just 1.5hour difference from summer's day time~ Yes, need good timing to view the sunset on ferry! Last time I was just a bit late, so I couldn't take a good pic of the "egg yolk"! This pic FYI :

Hey.. I have a problem here.. I have booked my flight to HK for 6-11 Jan 2010.. At first, there are 4 of us now turned out to be 2 of us can make it.. I am contemplating should I go or not with my bf as we are new as in the places and all.. We are afraid to get lost and confused with the map and everything.. Expenses there also quite high.. Roughly how much should we prepare? 2 persons seem a bit lonely and demotivated.. Should the 2 of us go at the first place? Really need help regarding the issue =)
*
It's surely no problem to come to HK just 2 of you! What have to be worried for travelling with only 2 of you? Most of the time go travelling is going to a place you have NOT been to, otherwise why bother to spend money, time and effort to plan for a trip to go somewhere you HAVE ALREADY BEEN familiar with? You shouldn't rely on others to see the map and find the way if you decide to go on a free'n easy trip, otherwise please go join a group tour. Even you travel with your friends, chances are your friends also get lost and confused with the map too, and turn out you all also have to ask people around... Travelling is somehow an adventure and to train one's ability of solving proplem and being independent.

Expenses can be controlled. There is a fan in my Facebook Page who spent only RM2000 for a 6 or 7 days trip... you can go find and ask him in my Page.

emmm...i had asked someone to get the road to Po Yan St. already..
btw, how much does it cost if i take taxi from sehung wan mtr to Po Yan St.?
and, wat is the best timin to take ding ding tram??cz i'm plannin to sit ding ding tram at night just to see the view..tongue.gif
will it waste of time??don't know how to arrange that..hmm!!  sad.gif
*
From Google Map, it seems not very far away from Sheung Wan MTR station.. so I think it wouldn't be over HKD40 or just around that price..

Best time to take ding-ding is non-peak hours, ie. before and after office hours. Take it after dinner la, so you can enjoy the night city view + less crowded. It is NOT a waste of time for sure! I enjoy taking ding-ding when it's not packed, very relax!

QUOTE(Ami Tsun @ Nov 6 2009, 01:50 PM)
@takki87

IMO, you should try to use "ding ding" as a form of transportation, rather than purposely go and take it, so that it won't be a waste of time lor...

Using "ding ding" as mode of transportation, for eg after visiting Ocean Park, go to Causeway Bay, from there "ding ding" all the way to Central.

Take "ding ding" from the terminal station to secure the front seats on the upper deck...
*
Yes you're right, if one can recognise landmarks in different areas, it's a good and cheaper transportation to replace MTR to travel along main spots on HK Island. Why I say so, becoz ding-ding doesn't have station name, so if you are first time visiting HK Island, you may not know where is Causeway Bay and where is Central by just looking at the buildings & surrounding... Even myself living in HK for decades, sometimes I am not sure where to get off when I am on the tram 'coz I never live on HK Island side....

hey, btw, i suggest you to take bus from The peak to go back to Central..the buss stop at Pedder St.. The bus ride is very interesting!~ And got night view to see too.. And you can walk from Pedder St to Lan Kwai Foong..
*
Agree! It's cheaper than Peak Tram but takes longer time lor...

QUOTE(Ami Tsun @ Nov 6 2009, 02:16 PM)
Hong Kong is very public-transport-friendly.  But many a times, a lot of travellers just rely on MTRs and taxis.  From my experience, do a bit of homework and it is easy and fun to travel by bus, "ding ding" and star ferry.

- MTR is convenient, but sometimes need to walk quite a distance to find the station's entrance.  At times, even after you found the underpass, still need to walk some 100 metres to the station.  Also, need to find the correct exit to minimise the walking distance to the final destination.

- Bus, sometimes the bus stop is just right in front!  Search the bus route from the HK bus web.  The fare, the route, the journey time, places of interest that's near to the bus stop and even the picture of the bus stop is shown on the page.  I print out the route and was able to follow through the bus journey and alight at the correct bus stop.  When not sure, just ask the friendly driver.  I've taken the green minibus too.

One thing to take note, bus fare is calculated from the point of boarding to the end terminal, even if you were to take only a few stops.  So, choose the bus that is going towards nearer the end terminal for minimum fare.  Eg, for the same destination, bus A might be ending soon after there but bus B might still go a long way before ending.  So, cheaper bus fare for bus A.

- Star ferry, good way of transferring between TST and HK Island.  Eg, from TST to Wan Chai, nearer distance to walk to the Golden Bauhinia Square.  Or from Central Pier (maybe after visiting Cheung Chau, or bus after the Peak), take Star ferry across to TST, so much nearer than to walk from Central Pier to Central MTR station to catch a train back to TST.

- The tram, aka "ding ding", from east to west or west to east on HK island, great way for transfer and sightseeing.

- Taxi, use taxi if you are dead tired and lazy to walk any further.  Taxi fare is metered, so no worries about taxi scam.

All information re transport, ie MTR, bus, star ferry, the tram, taxi and other ferries are available from the net.
*
Good Suggestions! thumbup.gif Ami, you must be an experienced traveller~!

i will go to lan kwai fong and mid-central escalator after go to disneyland on the other day.. smile.gif

You wanna take ding-ding after going down from the Peak, don't you? You can find ding-ding stops on the main street of Central (i.e. where the HSBC building located), then take ding-ding with the direction to Kennedy Town if you're going to Sheung Wan (btw, are you going to Sheung Wan or Shau Kei Wan?! as I don't know what you meant by Sheung Wan Kei...)

Hi hi,

I'm going to HK in 2 weeks time, very excited as this is my 1st time there, anyway would like to check with the sifu... I plan to go avenue of star to catch the light show first and maybe will walk till the clock tower. after that I plan to go lei yu moon (鯉魚門) for seafood.  We plan to take MTR to stop at "YaoTong" station and walk to the restaurant. Do you think normally this restaurant will still open till 8++pm? or it's advisable to go earlier so that the fresh stuff will still be available?
*
Of coz still open la! Restaurants in HK open till quite late, most Chinese restaurants open till 11pm... but they do have time set for last order, like half or 1 hour before their closing time. But 8++pm should not be a problem.

Most of their seafood are "alive" before they're cooked, so there is no difference if you go at 5pm or 8pm...

haha.. yep... but if anyone got motion-sickness, I won't recommend to take bus to/from the Peak...

I plan to walk from YaoTong station to 鯉魚門海傍道中 at nite should still be easy to find? What about the safely at nite, safe to walk there at nite?
*
I haven't tried to walk from the Yau Tong MTR station to Lei Yue Mun, last time I went there was about 7 or 8 years ago la.... (Yau Tong MTR hadn't been opened yet at that time.. Orz...) But from the map, it seems quite far away, estimate walking time could be over 20mins... I think it won't be too expensive if you take taxi from Yau Tong Station. Here I found the map from the net :
http://www.leiyuemun.com/map.html

You can refer to the suggestion in the website for transportation too. But in Chinese only.

Don't worry, HK is a safe city. I use to walk alone to home after midnight.

actually, i'm planning to take ding ding tram from shau kei wan to maybe central or causeway bay..just to enjoy the ride and view..but, it's seems wastin time.. tongue.gif
but, i wanna take ding ding tram after the peak just to enjoy the view but i don't know which station should i stop as from the peak to sheung wan seems quite near and can't enjoy much.tongue.gif

*
No need to take ding ding all the way from Shau Kei Wan la... it's really kinda wasting time unless you got a lot of spare time in the trip. I think it's enough to experience the ride to take ding ding between Central and Causeway Bay. Since both are main spots on the tram track, you can treat it as a replacement of MTR instead of riding it for no purpose...

Interested in Peninsula Verandah. Can't seem to find any info on it.

Free maps are available for pick up at the Tourist Information Counter. There is one located at Star Ferry Pier in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Yep Mandarin Oriental serve very good high tea!!! Highly recommended!! Other than that, can try in Four Seasons too, I heard comments are quite good too. If for high tea, actually I don't recommend the Peninsula 'coz too crowded all the time.... Many Mainland China people & Japanese too, there is always long queue there (maybe just beside your table) when you're enjoying your high-tea...

because as the info i have, it close at around 10-10.30pm..
i'm act plannin to go these places at night but worry not enough time..
*
It takes roughly 20-30mins to go up/down the peak by bus, if I'm not wrong..
Stalls in Fa Yuen Street generally start closing at around 10pm... but stalls in Ladies Street would close a bit later at around 11 or 11:30pm 'coz more people there. Therefore I suggest you to visit Fa Yuen Street before Ladies Street, 'coz items in Fa Yuen Street would be cheaper than Ladies Street 'coz more locals shop there. Ladies Street is somehow too "tourist-oriented".

Any more nice eateries around Causeway Bay coz i'm sick of those places my aunt always bring me..like Chui Yun (across the street from Lee Theatre) and a freaking good TeoChew cuisine around there.

Not yet... it's still early ma... now only in early-Nov, I think the "mood" will be ready by end of this month!

QUOTE(stimix @ Nov 9 2009, 09:48 AM)
I think Singapore xmas deco much better than HK...I was there last year Dec...not much xmas deco..however the area I visited only limited to Areana of stars, Mongkok, & the peak....not sure elsewhere.
*
I haven't been in S'pore during x'mas time but the heat is killing me... I think it's better to feel the x'mas mood in somewhere with cold weather, the colder the better!!! thumbup.gif

yes, i just checked the forecast too..
it's getting colder and a bit rain..
hope it won't rain whole day...or else it's not convenience!!

oh yea, you said you will go to the Peak in Friday, right? Please do bring along jacket/coat 'coz it's even colder and very windy at the Peak!

It won't be raining heavily in Winter. Most of the time it's only sleet. Can go without umbrella if not walking for long distance.

My last trip to the peak was last year...started at 2pm & down by 4pm..at 2pm abit hazy but ~4pm sky clearer...Morning worst..hazy. So I think Evening to Nite better...But hor my 1st trip to HK was in 1995 summer mth Hot but clear sky...There was no The Peak yet..the bus just brought us 1/2 way up Victoria peak, & whatever photos takenm during that time (1995) turned up nothing bcos, long time ago camera not so sophisticated..can't really take nite shots!! So those dun hv proper camera stand & nite still shoit...going at nite can be  disaster!!...imagine u can see yourselve but background nothing!...But nowadays most Dig Camera probably good liao..otherwise..rethink if going at nite... biggrin.gif although I agreed the view at nite for sure very nais but not on lousy camera.. smile.gif

this was taken from the top of the peak ~3.35pm last Dec:

Hmm... let me think think... It seems that The Peak was still in renovation in 1995, that's why you can go up to the top... Actually The Peak has been existing for a few decades already, but before renovation, it's only a small building with viewing floors but no shopping, no museum, no entertainment at all...

It really depends on the weather you visit the Peak, sometimes it's clear even in Winter, and you've the higher risk of having bad weather during summer... Typhoon/Heavy Rain VS Hazy, which one you choose to risk? hmm.gif heheee...

Hi All,

Will be travelling to HK on 30th April - 5th May next year. I wanted to get some advices on accommodation as my girl friend and my friend and I (total of 4) will be going on a free and easy trip to HK during that period. Had surveyed quite some websites on hotels and motels but can't decide yet where to stay and which will be a good/decent and cheap one. I know that 1st May is labor day and China will have 3 days direct holidays during that period (correct me if I am wrong), so thought of reserving the accommodation now itself (within this month or next)

Would like some advice on the same.

My requirement and budget will be:-

a) RM 150 - RM 230 (Lower will be better) per night
b) Near to MRT and shopping places
c) Clean and not too nasty (meaning too "chap" -cantonese)

My friend requirement and budget will be:-

a) RM 110 - RM 180 per night
b) Near to MRT and shopping places
c) Clean

All you guys advise is much sought and appreciated as I need to decide and plan ahead upon getting settled down on accomodation

Did you contact Dragon Hostel in Mongkok? There are many forumers talked about this hostel and with positive comments. Maybe you can give it a try. Other options can try Bridal Teahouse Budget Hotels...

Dear forumers, is it advisable to go HK disneyland during the weekends? to be exact, 22nd Nov (Sunday)

Not suggest you to go on weekends if you've better choice... You know, I even will suggest you all NOT go to Mongkok on weekends too... It's simply terribly crowded!

Hi northasian, really love the info and advise you provided in v1 n v2. At last, I already book my plane on 22nd Dec 09 - 27th Dec 09. Yes, my plan is celebrate my christmas eve in HK disneyland, and I have other thing to do also, do propose to my gf.

My plan to propose to her when we at the castle watch the firework in disneyland, after enjoy middle of the show, I will knee down and ask:"Would you marry me?"

What do you think guys? Unforgettable eve right?

Anyway, here is some info if you would love to buy discount rate of disneyland and ocean park, here is the link from dragon hostel:
http://www.dragonhostel.com/disney.htm
http://www.dragonhostel.com/oceanpark.htm

I still think of staying on dragon hostel, but i go with my gf, do you think Dorsett Seaview Hotel will be better(RM240, internet promotion)?

Please I really headache thinking of the schedule... XD
*
First of all, thanks for your compliment and support! biggrin.gif

Agreed with what Ami said. The place to watch firework is not at the Castle, 'coz the fireworks is actually displayed at somewhere close to the Castle.. Disneyland want you to watch the fireworks with the Castle as its background ma... Also, it seems that the Castle in HK's Disneyland is not permitted to go inside... sleep.gif"

So as Ami suggested, either to book a table in the Mainstreet Restaurant, or if you've more budget, book a table at Disneyland Hotel, the interior is just too great for a propose 'coz it's very "Antique English" style!

As it's a proposal trip, I think you better book a better place to stay... don't stay at Dragon Hostel la..... doh.gif Dorsett Seaview is a nice choice, while you can also consider Bridal Teahouse Budget Hotels or The Cityview, both of them are located in Mongkok/Yau Ma Tei area.

Wish you all the best and a successful & sweet proposal! wub.gif

Northasian,

Meaning Dorsett Seaview, Bridal Teahouse Budget Hotels or The Cityview is also a good choice? I am going next year...thought of surveying now...can i know how advance we need to book hotels in HK...let say I am going during Labor Holiday next year?  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

Yes, there are quite a lot of positive feedback from our forumers on those hotels, so you can check all of their rate and compare. All of them are in strategic location except Bridal Teahouse, as they have several branches in HK, some are not very close to MTR station...

I think you'd better book the hotel earlier 'coz Labour Day is called "Golden Week" in Mainland China. Many Mainlanders like to visit HK during that week. You can ask those hotels if they have already issued the rate for May 2010..

QUOTE(louislim2 @ Nov 11 2009, 07:05 AM)
Thanks for the advise bro. I totally don't know what happen inside the disneyland, so really appreciate you guys give me so much value information! book a table at Disneyland Hotel very expensive? How much is would be?
I don't know the dinner price at Disneyland Hotel, but if you won't spare much budget on it, suggest you to try their English High-tea set. It's around HKD190-200 per person.

What other romantic things I can do at hong kong? I wanna her 'lam' me forever!!  brows.gif
22 Dec 09
reach macau at 2030, do you think I should book a room at dorsett seaview or stay at macau?
As you will be going back and stay 1 nite in Macau on the last day, so better go to HK right away on this day la...

23 Dec 09
will be at hong kong
This day can go to The Peak. Be there in late afternoon, like 4pm, visit the Wax Museum and some shops, then 5.30-5.45pm to watch the sunset (if weather is good), then wait there until the sky dark out and watch the night view.

24 Dec 09
will be at disneyland

25 Dec 09
christmas day - dont know where I should go
HUH? Didn't you do any homework for a PROPOSAL TRIP?!?!?! If you don't mind crowds, pack with the people to along Tsim Sha Tsui Harbourfront Promenade (Avenue of Stars) to see the X'mas light deco on buildings along the harbour. Go to Ocean Terminal, they use to put up beautiful x'mas deco on the Entrance next to the Star Ferry.

26 Dec 09
morning at hk, night at macau
Go to Venetian Resort. The night view of the hotel is quite nice.

27 Dec 09
morning go back malaysia

Hi,

Can the sifu here give some advise,

On my trip to HK, I'll be putting a night at Macau, on the next day from Macau to go back Hong Kong, which ferry terminal should I go to?

1) 香港港澳碼頭hong kong macau ferry terminal 珠江客運有限公司 (at sheung wan if not mistaken), OR
2) 中港碼頭 Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal (at Tsim Sha Tsui if not mistaken)

I'll be bring the luggage from Macau to HK, my plan is to check in at Dragon hostel first, so am wondering which ferry terminal should I go to will be more convenient (coz i'll be walking with the luggage)

Oh yah, it seems there are quite a number of ferry operator, any good ones to recomend? or they are more or less the same?

Thanks for ur advise ya.

2) 中港碼頭 Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal (at Tsim Sha Tsui if not mistaken)

Which one is nearer to MTR station? No 2 is nearer to Dragon Hostel but frm the map it seems quite far from MTR station? So I'm worried if i have to carry the luggage to walk quite a bit.
*
If you're carry baggage, will definitely advise you to arrive at 港澳碼頭 in Sheung Wan. As you see from the map it's quite far to walk from Tsim Sha Tsui 中港碼頭 to the MTR station, it's not wise to take taxi for this distance 'coz the fare difference of MTR from Sheung Wan to Mongkok and from Tsim Sha Tsui tsui to Mongkok is just a few bucks only. But if you take taxi, it's roughly $20-25 per way.. and not counted the baggage charge of HK$5 per piece yet wor...

Sheung Wan MTR station is just downstair the 港澳碼頭 building, with escalator going down, it's convenient for people carrying luggage.

It seems that 珠江客運 is for ferry between 中港碼頭 and China, not Macau wor...? The one for 中港碼頭 should be New First Ferry, and the one for 港澳碼頭 is Turbojet and Cotai. So if you choose to land at 港澳碼頭, I recommend you to take Cotai which is departed from Taipa (where the Macau Int'l airport located) to Sheung Wan.

thanks for the suggestion, will included in my plan. Yes, my plan pretty simple, don't expect too much, just relax and take some time to enjoy the natural and view in hong kong.... if rush like you guys, is fun, but damn tired. (holiday suppose to be relaxation... tongue.gif) so will mix up with some plan, but don't want too much and pretty simple but make it fun! biggrin.gif

More suggestion for 5 romantics night will be great. Now I have 3 nights.... thanks to moody5. biggrin.gif
1.The Peak for sunset + night view
2.Victoria Harbor for sunset + night view
3.Shopping at Causeway Bay at night (romantic for her! company her till my wallet end up! biggrin.gif)
- Always watch tv programme they mention about the winter sales at hong kong, will it be near christmas eve? northasian please let me know if anything do so...

- Christmas eve they will have firework in hongkong, do you know where is it? (my friend told me yesterday!  rclxms.gif )
*
Winter Sale will be on around this time or mid-Nov, until CNY. Not only Christmas eve ga...

NO, HK does NOT have firework on Christmas eve. Ask your friend to show you evident!! HK just have fireworks on Chor 2 of CNY & 1 Oct National Day of China. Sometimes got fireworks for 1 July HKSAR Handover Day but not every year.

where is the "this"? you got the address?

If for the Horizon Plaza, you will be paying maybe over HK$50 for the taxi 'coz it's not close to Central. I haven't been there yet, but I heard people said it's not worth to go..

Wanted to ask,
Is the Airport Express Travel Pass = an octopus card?

I got a bit confused on this. Coz from what I read, if buy the airport Express Travel pass, can have 3 consecutive days of unlimited travel on MTR (certain lines are excluded).

If they are not the same, is it worth to get the airport express travel pass (1way)?
*
Yes, the one with AEL is called Tourist Octopus, so obviously it's an Octopus Card.
http://www.octopuscards.com/consumer/help/...ts/en/index.jsp

My advice is, if your hotel is located somewhere reachable for bus, it's better just buy the normal Octopus card... Unless you really wanna try the AEL service..

Bring thick clothes 'coz temperature will start to drop below 20'c from tomorrow, and even lower to 13'c on next Tuesday... Check weather forecast here :
