Short lists for FIFA World Player awards revealed

(FIFA.com) Friday 30 October 2009

Who will be honoured with the title of FIFA World Player and FIFA Women's World Player for 2009? FIFA has today announced the names of the players on the short lists (see below) and the final decision will be made by the captains and head coaches of the men's and women's national teams.

At the beginning of December, FIFA will announce the names of the five men and five women who have received the most votes and the winners will be revealed at the 19th FIFA World Player Gala at the Zurich Kongresshaus on 21 December 2009.

It should be noted that coaches and captains may not vote for players from the national team they coach or play for.

The lists of 23 male and ten female candidates for these prestigious awards have been drawn up by football experts from the Football Committee and the Committee for Women's Football and the FIFA Women's World Cup.

The following 23 men (in alphabetical order) are in contention for the title of FIFA World Player 2009;

The following ten women (in alphabetical order) are in contention for the title of FIFA Women's World Player 2009;

I'm voting for Iniesta/Xavi, but Messi sure win. Many Messi fanboy sure want him win. Sure, he is damn good,
but without Iniesta/Xavi in Barca, sure Barca become like Argie. tongue.gif

So my vote to Iniesta!

Xabi Alonso ??? I think you mean Xavi

Btw 1st - Lionel Messi ( no doubt )

2nd - C.Ronaldo ( come on, he win this award last season and help Man Utd retain EPL & final UCL )

3rd - Xavi / Iniesta ( any of them deserved it )

Women sure Marta. Don't know others candidate

Messi definately. The season before i look at Messi and Ronaldo and i see one thing that was clearly missing from Messi is aerial ability. My point totaly change when he scored that nice header against us in the final.

1. Messi
2. Ronaldo - did anyone noticed how Madrid was devastating in september but are underperforming now? only reason he is above Xavi imo.
3. Xavi

Since the result of this is likely to be based on who plays best between the summer of 08 to the summer of 09 I'd have to say Messi. Was heads and shoulders above everyone else in the La Liga and won the treble with Barca. Though his performances for Argentina leaves a lot to be desired, his form for his club was consistently good last season. Him and Eto'o were devastating. Torres was sublime every time he was fit, and Xavi and Iniesta (if you were to give it to one you'd surely have to give it to the other) were excellent in midfield. Ronaldo popped in a number of goals but was no where near the form of those four I've mentioned.
