Min-maxing for raids = Blacksmith and Enchanting/Jewelcrafting.

New player = Mining & Skinning for gold

Casual player = Mining & Engineering. Engineering doesn't earn you gold but gives you some fun toys. But it can be a frustrating profession. Another combo could be Skinning & Leatherworking.

to add into that, if ur more into pvp, engineering would be a popular choice due to its gadgets/added burst dmg. it used to suck back in TBC but since buffs from WOTLK (though abeit nerfed, or "outscaled" of late, as in engineering stuffs remain the same while things like higher lvl enchants/epic gems are emerging), engineering is still a popular choice amongst pvp'ers

i would find skinning + LW is really good for a hunter to lvl and move into surv spec in the early 80s

For pvpers, id go with skinning and engineering. Skinning for its passive effect increasing critical strike rating and engineering for their crazy stuff. Enchanting u can buy, most engineering stuff required u to have engineering skill to wear/use em. The reason why id go engineering over enchanting. biggrin.gif

However, if its gold u talking about, id say go for skinning/mining/herbalism. Selling profession mats is one the popular way to make huge amount of gold. nod.gif

Take note if you do go Engineering, the mind control helm tinker for Hunters is virtually useless, you can't use it if your pet is active.

Nitro boots and pyro rocket glove tinkers are still great tho, and Disengage + parachute cloak is win.

The answer is....... it depends tongue.gif

1. If you not level 80 yet, get gathering skills like herbing or mining. Its good money and trust me, you need GOLD more than anything else at this point in time.
2. If you are level 80 but still don't own basic flying skills/mounts, go back to #1
3. If you are level 80 but have less than 5k in the bank, go back to #1

You are 80, have over 5k in your bank and the essentials without worrying too much about gold. THIS is when you start thinking about the best professions for your class.
In terms of PvE, there really isn't a significant difference between the professions (with the exception of tailoring) so you are actually pretty much free to pick and choose what you want. The best "bang for the buck" combo in my opinion is a combination of either Alchemy, JC or Enchanting.

Alchemy - Saves money cos your flasks last twice as long and are more potent. It is also a decent money maker if you are willing to invest some time in studying your local AH.
JC - A lot of utility and by far the best money maker.
Enchanting - If you don't have an enchanting toon, this is very good.

Never overlook the importance of gold as a new player. This is probably the best advice I can give tongue.gif

Skinning doesn't provide much benefit for high end PvP. The increased crit is nice but with everyone running around in high resilience it's pretty pointless, you would be better off with mining and the increased HP. Plus you would need mining to fuel your engineering skill ups.

no such thing as a "best" these days. you might as well claim BS x JC for the added socket + jc gem combo :/
it used to be the classic jc/enh combo until the other proffs receiving huge buffs in WOTLK for their proff exclusive bonuses.

right now you can have a combo of eng + x for the ultility/bursts eng offers, or even stick to classics like jc + enh, or even enh + BS for static character sheet bonuses
