Hey guys I just went there to find a laptop, friend's father recommended me BenQ Joybook S42. here are the specs

BENQ JOYBOOK S42-LE22 NOTEBOOK
Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.50GHz/3M L2/1066FSB)
14.1" WXGA TFT LCD Display
4GB DDR2 Memory
500GB 5400RPM S-ATA Hard Disk Drive
nVIDIA Geforce 9600M GT (256mb)
8x DVD Super Multi Double Layer Drive
WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n, HDMI Port
Integrated (V.92 Modem / 2.0M Camera / Bluetooth)
1 YEar International Warranty & On-site Pick Up
BENQ Carrying Case
MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 HOME BASIC (OEM)
USB OPTICAL MOUSE
KEYBOARD PROTECTOR
LCD CLEANER
COOLER PAD

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

those were the stuffs that were listed in the quotation. Initially it was 2GB RAM but i managed to bargain with him for a 4GB RAM for free instead. RM 3,188 (2,899 ringgit without OS)

In the catalog, it says that the GPU is Geforce 9600M GT VRAM: 512mb shared. but in the quotation he typed 256mb instead. What does this mean? I asked him, but he was blabbering about something, can't really understand his English. Do you think the price is reasonable? And P8700 is 2.53GHz not 2.50GHz rite? And another thing, 9600M GT is DDR3 or DDR 2? I'm worried..

oh, and the price for the WIN 7 Home was RM 289 btw

nice price smile.gif
9600m GT in there is GDRR3, 512MB and 256MB wouldn't affect the performance too much, probably just 1 fps.
p8700 is 2.53GHz

a lot forummer here using benq s42, can check on http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1183247
it is GDDR3, 25MB and 512MB won't affect too much, the card still not that strong to use all of it.
my friend bought it and it is 512MB.

that day, watching movie while the notebook is on the bed with no cooler, its just warm smile.gif

256MB and 512MB got difference only if the card is strong enough to use them and you are playing at high resolution such as 1920x1080.

the higher mAH, the more capacity, then depends on how much you laptop sucks, that's the battery life
battery capacity/your laptop using = battery life

conventionally speaking, for Nvidia cards the amount of RAM affects only the usable resolution... for 1280x800, 256MB is good enuf... more often than not, the speed of the RAM has a big impact on performance...

unless u re using at resolutions like 1680x1050 and above, dun worry too much abt the graphic RAM...

TS, u still need suggestion?? i am a S42 user also...very first batch..proccesor only 2.26Ghz..but trust me, for the money u spend, it would be very worthy...

if u wanna look at performance, click on my siggy and u'll be quite a list of games being benchmarked, i recall playing crysis warhead in ultra high texture with mid shader and low shadow, can get around 30fps..other games like burnout paradise i can easily get 50fps++ with near maximum settings..

sadly, it does get hot easily, after all, it's a 14.1'' laptop, not much space for air flow..ur card might hit 80C++ or even 90C++ in graphic intense games..but dun worry, mine is one years old, and still kicking ass, and i heard this card is meant to take high temperatures

and if u want longer battery also, just switch to intel GMA. I get around 2-3 hours with max brightness watching HD movie...and WiFi also is turned on i remember...
