Hi.
To kindly remind you, not all of us here knows exactly everything. So perhaps you can provide some background information on the subject that you're discussing.

Anyway, here's what I've found:
QUOTE
Augmentin is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin. http://www.drugs.com/augmentin.html

QUOTE
Ciprofloxacin (INN) is a drug used to treat bacterial infections.
# Urinary tract infections
# Acute uncomplicated cystitis in females
# Chronic bacterial prostatitis
# Lower respiratory tract infections
# Acute sinusitis
# Skin and skin structure infections
# Bone and joint infections
# Infectious diarrhea
# Typhoid fever (enteric fever) caused by Salmonella typhi
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciprofloxacin

From what I've read from these two sites, the drugs you're referring to both used to treat bacterial infections.
Since they both have the same function, why would both of it be prescribed at the same time?

Anyway, I'm not of pharmaceutical nor medicine background. I'm just another student pursuing an engineering degree. So pardon me if I've made factual mistakes smile.gif

there shouldnt be any interaction between those 2 drugs. u should see a doctor for confirmation in regards to your own case at hand though. prescribtion is a medical practitioner's role

edit: by no interaction meaning they dont act against each other producing adverse effects

they acts differently

augmentin is in penicillin group.. anyone who is allergy to penicillin shd be careful with this medication. it is bactericidal in properties, inhibits the bacterial cell wall synthesis and best usage for gram positive organism and some gram negative organism.

ciprofloxacin is in quinolones group, and it is usually have higher incidence of resistance to this antibiotic due to over using of this antibiotic. have good anti-psedomonas properties. bacteriocidal in nature, inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis oh, more effective in gram negative, but do cover some gram positive too.

why u need to prescribe both augmentin and cipro at the same time? wat infection u r dealing with? there are other better combination..

ALL ANTIBIOTICS cover gram positive and gram negative, no?

that's why side effects of antibiotics is diarrhea.

reason? it kills all bacteria, even the good ones, therefore making way for new bacteria to come in. that is the true nature of how antibiotics work

and depending on the ACTIVE INGREDIENT. some anti biotics, actually most will come with clavomid acid.

check whether ur antibiotics targets a specific range of diseases because most manufacturers claim that it is broad spectrum

Thanks for the valuable information provided. biggrin.gif Im currently undergoing training in a Pharmacy. Came across this prescription so prompted by my pharmacist. My frenz & I do not have the ans to it.
Ya they are both from the different groups. However, both are broad spectrum antibiotics. But, why would Dr prescribe these two together? Cuz we seldom see prescriptions for 2 Antibiotics at the same time. So, anyone has any idea what is the likely infection of the patient dat require these combination?
I jus hate Antibiotics. They are so complicated!

not all antibiotic cover gram negative n gram positive. certain antibiotic got better gram positive coverage and vice versa. dont forget the anerobes as well... some antibiotic kills bacterial (bacteriocidal) and some stops the replication(bacteriostatic)

well, antibiotics are fun and challenging.. and the usage of antibiotic are according to one's liking and preferance. always go back to the clinical why the doctor prescribing it, check the patient's file. the answer always in patient. maybe the doctors prescribe according to the culture

Interactions, none that I know of. But Ciprofloxacin and Augmentin's spectrum mostly overlap, hence I don't see the need to give both antibiotics together. If the doctor really wanna go wide to cover everything, adding Gentamicin to Augmentin might be better to cover gram -ve organisms. What is the diagnosis or impression of the patient in the first place?
