I have been renting a master bedroom for 3 years. At the start, I paid 2 months of deposit. Nothing was sign, it was a verbal agreement. But, I still keep the transfer slip with me on the deposit.

I am about to move out of this room as I am about to get an apartment of my own. Can I get back my rental deposit when I want to move out or do I have to stay in the current room for the next two months (i.e. I need to inform my housemate that I am moving two months prior to my moving out)?

Or, do I discuss this with my housemate?

Any idea? Thanks.

Inform your housemate 2 months in advance that you are moving out:

1. use the 2 months deposit to set off the remaining rentals.

2. Keep paying and get the lump sum when you move out (make sure your housemate agrees to pay you back first)

At the start u only pay 2 months of deposits and did you check whether what types of deposits are that?

If it is meant for the electricity+water and miscellaneous deposits, you have to inform your housemate and your landlord which u paid the deposits to. You can get back the full amount if there is no outstanding bills amount and the room that rented to you is under good conditions.

If it is meant for rental deposits, did you pay for the rental of your 1st month stay? if yes, then u can utilize the two months rental for your two months stay. If you didn't pay the 1st month rental at the beginning, you can utilize it for one month stay.

since all are in verbal agreement, so you have to talk to housemate and the landlord that you paid the deposits to.

I am moving to my new condo unit by mid Feb (based on S&P) and I am currently renting with some other housemates. The problem is that I don't have a confirmation date when I can move in. I don't want to end up paying rental and also the loan for my condo unit. At the same time, if I were to inform my housemate early, I fear they wun be too happy, cos i can't give them a confirmation date (and thus they can find a new room tenant).
Any idea when should i tell my housemate? At what stage? (so that when i check the status with my lawyer, after they have reach this stage, i can start to inform my housemate)

finally informed my housemate...

as an advice to putting who are renting rooms from the main housemate and there is no written agreement, do remember to discuss with your housemate before paying the deposit on how you will the deposit be settled if in the future you move out; this will save much hassle in the future....

my deposits are not refundable but of cos i get to stay here for at least 2 months....
