Valve Snaps Up Defense of the Ancients Dev
By Michael McWhertor, 1:40 PM on Mon Oct 5 2009

Valve has made a hire that should perk up the ears of the Warcraft III mod community, as "IceFrog," the current developer of ultra popular Defense of the Ancients Allstars, has found gainful employment at the house of Half-Life.

The announcement was made via the DotA forums, with IceFrog writing that he is "now leading a team at Valve" and "finally have all the resources needed to do some very exciting stuff that you guys will love." And by "you guys," we're guessing that means Defense of the Ancients Allstars players. Which would hopefully mean continued development of the mod.

What exactly the DotA dev will be doing at Valve, we don't yet know. But we did confirm that hire with Valve who was regrettably unable to offer any further details into the addition to the team.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

so valve gonna develop dota now? sweat.gif

shat and we spent usd30 on hon.

at least we got fun outta it.

first person shooter dota anyone?

hmmm dota in fps sounds exciting.

maybe a futuristic dota with guns, physic and all etc. like mass effect.

should be like this:

heroes + creeps = controlled by players.

heroes: 5 vs 5 = 10 players

the rest can jump in and use any creep

hmm.. wait.. sounds like fail ..

You know what, I'll be interested to have a look at whatever this is. The main issue I have with all these DoTA games was the extremely limited control. I always felt like there was a lack of strategy involved in them. I know this isn't the point of them. But I never felt the appeal of levelling a single character. Moving around, rinse and repeat.

WHat is interesting is that most of these DoTA games are positioned as a strategy game/RTS in which most in the genre involve controlling a large army(you become an armchair general not a single hero). But in the FPS genre, you are always only controlling a single character anyway(the exceptions are a few tactical games). In an FPS game, I wont have the expectation of having battlefield control like a typical strategy game.

I think this could mean less of the mental block I have for this particular genre.

I think everyone who hates DotA have different issues with it.

I dislike it because it has zillions of items and heroes to play with, where it is hard to learn.Secondly,it felt very lack of control to me and too simplified in terms of scale. It wasnt epic and the map always the same.I also find it's draggy, with most of the time farming with creeps and the ridiculously long spawn time is just annoying.

Still, the new gen of RTS,like DoW2,C&C4 and the rest pretty much against the big armies and arm chair general concept. It's getting dumbed down,as no one actually enjoys base building or large scale battles these days for some reason.

If that was the case, Valve should've hired the Natural Selection team instead.

I personally think its going to be something pretty radical.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but that's severely false.
The CS team was hired and they went on to continue updating CS (Yes to this very day) and made an actual retail version out of it (Counter-strike: Source).
Ditto for the Day of Defeat and Team Fortress teams.
Even the Narbacular Drop team was hired to expand on that game's concept.

Make no mistake, Icefrog was definitely hired for his influence on Dota and we'll most certainly see something along those lines being produced. Highly doubtful it'll be RTS-style due to Valve's background, but certainly something along that vein but in FPS form probably.

Well, I think a lot of Dota players will still give that new game a dip even if it's not their type given "IceFrog" has become a brand itself, smart move by Valve business wise.

BTW this game needs local servers if it is to be big. Having ozzy and JPN servers not good enough. Their skill is lower than the local dotard. And US the latency is too high. Valve needs to have local server or the local dotards will forget this game.!!!!!!! RAGE!!!!

WE NEED A BETTER INDICATION OF SKILL POWERRRR!

accordingly to the trusted unofficial source, icefrog will come out new similar DotA game with multiple races such as legion, human, orc, elf, naga (sea-monster), predetor (alien), terminator (robot). Heros skill and thousand of spell will be newly created with new game engine (Ice-CoreX);

the success of the new game from valve in dota will depend on how creative from Icefrog team to completely compete with other release company. IceFrog riches with their experience and with new game engine help, this will definitely another deep impact to currently dota game like game soon in 2010 summer.

Actually, since Dota's hero roster is usually based on various fictional characters from other stories, perhaps Valve are gearing up some game where you can have various Valve game characters in it.

Imagine:
Gordon Freeman
- Laser guided RPG
- Can pilot vehicles
- No voice chat

Bill
- Unlimited pistol ammo
- Ability to point
- Dynamic smoking

Chell
- No combat abilities
- No fall damage
- WCC pet

Counter-terrorist
- $$$
- Armour
- Bunny hop

Entire Team Fortress roster
- Hats
- Hats
- Hats

Definitely, they do need to change the game a bit.I do hope isnt not just a copy and paste of DotA.

One thing I do not mind would be a FPS dota sounds like a great idea to me though I hate dota.

But come to think about it TF2 is abit dotaish just that you dont get items and leveling with magic.

No,TF2 is more like a fusion of Quake/UT gameplay and Battlefield classes, with some other innovations in it.

It has nothing to do with DoTa.

Hats and items in TF2 are completely different from leveling or DotA item.

i think it will be abit like RYL. just that u dont have to grind until lvl 95. u start over again every time from lvl 1 to 25. dont u think so? RYL has got melee and range, and ryl has creeps.

Valve has the tendency of hiring indie developer to their hive so they can milk them to death by churning out those damn addictive 'casual' game like Audiosurf. smile.gif

Former DotA developers express concern over Valve's DOTA trademark
Posted Aug 16th 2010 11:30AM by John Callaham
Filed under: RTS

Last week we reported that Valve has applied for a trademark for "DOTA" suggesting strongly that the long standing rumors of the developer making a Defense of the Ancients game are indeed true. Now a couple of former developers of the popular WarCraft III action-RTS mod have expressed concerns about Valve's actions.

Our sister site Joystiq states that Steve "Pendragon" Mescon and Steve "Guinsoo" Feak, who worked on Dota-All Stars, (and now work at Riot Games on the DotA-inspired title League of Legends) stated that they believes the "DotA name should remain the property of the community at-large, as it always has." Mescon believes that Valve's trademarking of the "DotA" name suggests that the developer is "exercising control over its future."

It should be noted that Valve has yet to even announce a DotA game, much less its plans for the franchise. Also Valve is perhaps one of the most open developers out there, issuing mod tools, supporting mod teams and even releasing free stand alone games such as the recent Alien Swarm.

Huh? Source please (Hehe, pun totally unintended)?

I wasn't aware that he is with Valve now and a quick google search yields nothing.

Also, what other "casual" game developer have they hired? And what "casual" game have they released anyway? (Audiosurf isn't even a Valve release)

i think the correct words to use would be:
"valve hire modders and modders enjoices employment under valve."

source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Fortress_2

"The development of Team Fortress 2 was led by John Cook and Robin Walker, the designers who originally created the Team Fortress modification for Quake in 1996."

Added on August 18, 2010, 9:52 ammore source here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Walker

"Robin Walker, creator of the Team Fortress series of computer games and current employee of Valve Corporation"

current employee.
no change company yet, must be happy employee hohoho.

Oh yeah, I know perfectly well that's Valve's strategy (Team Fortress 2, Alien Swarm, Portal, Counter-strike, etc) were all the results from hiring modders... I was just wondering how he came to the conclusion that these ppl end up making "casual" games.

Valve has promised "at least" three "big surprises" for gamers in the next 12 months. Half-Life 3, anyone?

Unfortunately - in typical, teasing style - it refused to be drawn on any detail of what the surprises entailed.

Speculation over a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 announcement was rife before E3 in June, but never materialised. Valve cancelled a planned press conference at the LA Expo very suddenly - which was supposed to reveal a "surprise".

Maybe that was one of the three?

"I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop any time soon. I'm just laughing because... people will be shocked again," Valve boss Gabe Newell told the latest issue of PC Gamer.

"We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least."

Bring 'em on, Gabe. Bring 'em on.

Newell has also revealed that Valve is working hard on biometrics to better understand their customers - and, potentially, to bring freaky new heart-monitoring thrills to gameplay.

So Dota Source is one
Episode 3 is second

Third?

i hope the new dota source has a better respawn system. or at least allow the option to remove the respawn timer.

having to wait 2 minutes to revive is no funs.
